Virtual 4T4R Virtual 4T4R in macro and LampSite eNodeBs differs by networking
mode. For details, see 2.1 Introduction.
2 Overview
2.1 Introduction
The GSM/UMTS-to-LTE evolution requires that a large number of six-sector or multi-sector
sites that use narrow-beam or split antennas on live networks evolve to LTE sites. To reduce
interference and improve user experience, single frequency network (SFN) is applied to such
sites if they bear low load. An alternative capacity improvement solution is required if these
sites have medium or high load.
NOTE
A narrow-beam antenna has a 33°-wide beam within a radome. A split antenna has two 33°-wide beams
within a radome and the angle of the two beams being about 50°.
Huawei launches the Virtual 4T4R feature to resolve the capacity problem for sites with
medium or high load. This feature brings multi-antenna gains and improves cell capacity and
user experience without adjusting hardware (including antennas) on live networks.
Virtual 4T4R is implemented differently in macro cells and LampSite cells.
decrease causes the coverage area to shrink and the UE number to decrease by about 10%. If
the RRU transmit power for the virtual 4T4R cell can be increased, the coverage is not
affected by the reconstruction.
In LampSite networking, two pRRUs are combined into a set of 4T4R sector equipment. One
or more (a maximum of eight) sets of 4T4R sector equipment form a 4T4R sector equipment
group. One 4T4R sector equipment group constitutes a virtual 4T4R cell. Virtual 4T4R cells
served by LampSite eNodeBs have the following two networking schemes:
l Left-right networking
CRS ports on the pRRUs that are in the same location are deployed in a unified manner,
constituting two groups of pRRUs geographically and forming two beams (left/right).
Independent scheduling can be implemented on either beam, achieving spatial
multiplexing.
l Crossed networking
CRS ports on the pRRUs that are in different locations are deployed in a crossed manner,
maximizing overlapping areas of 4T4R ports. Joint scheduling is implemented in
overlapping areas, maximizing 4T4R multi-stream gains.
2.2 Benefits
Virtual 4T4R Gains in Macro Cells
Table 2-1 shows the gains of virtual 4T4R reconstruction from SFN cells or multi-sector
GSM/UMTS sites (to be evolved to LTE sites) served by macro eNodeBs that use narrow-
beam or split antennas.
4T4R multi-sector reconstruction is recommended if the PRB usage of virtual 4T4R cells
after reconstruction exceeds 50%.
networking increases the user-perceived rate and cell capacity while ensuring network
KPI stability.
In crossed networking, compared with SFN cells, virtual 4T4R cells bring high-order MIMO
gains to UEs supporting 4x4 MIMO and improve user experience.
3 Technical Description
The implementation principles of virtual 4T4R are the same in macro and LampSite cells.
This function is controlled by the Virtual4T4RSwitch(Virtual4T4RSwitch) option of the
CellAlgoSwitch.EmimoSwitch parameter. The CellRacThd.CellCapacityMode parameter
must be set to NORMALCAPACITY(NORMALCAPACITY) for virtual 4T4R cells.
In virtual 4T4R cells, left and right beams are formed to implement differentiated scheduling
on UEs in different beam areas.
The eNodeB measures uplink reference signal received power (RSRP) of UEs based on
sounding reference signals (SRSs) sent by UEs. It determines whether the UEs are
independently or jointly scheduled based on the uplink RSRP difference between left and
right beams.
The following figure shows the area division for independent scheduling and joint scheduling
using parameter values in Table 3-1 as an example:
As shown in Figure 3-1, P indicates the RSRP difference between beam 1 and beam 0, which
is calculated by using the formula: P = Pbeam 1 - Pbeam 0.
The scheduling area division differs by RB usage in the virtual 4T4R cell.
l When the RB usage in the virtual 4T4R cell is less than or equal to 20% and a UE
initially accesses the cell, P in [-15, +15] indicates joint scheduling, or in other areas
indicates independent scheduling. After the UE completes initial access, the points for
changing the UE scheduling attribute are as follows:
– The points for changing joint scheduling to independent scheduling are -18 and
+18.
– The points for changing independent scheduling to joint scheduling are -12 and
+12.
l When the RB usage in the virtual 4T4R cell is greater than 20% and a UE initially
accesses the cell, P in [-5, 5] indicates joint scheduling, or in (-∞, -15] and [15, ∞)
indicates independent scheduling. If P lies in (5, 15) or (-15, -5), the scheduling attribute
depends on channel conditions.
– If the determination result based on channel conditions is rank 1, the scheduling
attribute is independent scheduling. After the UE completes initial access, the points
for changing the UE scheduling attribute are as follows:
The points for changing independent scheduling to joint scheduling are -2 and +2.
The points for changing joint scheduling to independent scheduling are -8 and +8.
– If the determination result based on channel conditions is rank 2, the scheduling
attribute is joint scheduling. After the UE completes initial access, the points for
changing the UE scheduling attribute are as follows:
The points for changing joint scheduling to independent scheduling are -18 and
+18.
The points for changing independent scheduling to joint scheduling are -12 and
+12.

5 Network Impact
System Capacity
In overlapping areas, virtual 4T4R brings a maximum of 4-stream gains, increases the user
peak rate for 4R UEs, and increases the cell peak throughput. The RS overhead increases
because four CRS ports are used for signal transmission simultaneously. As a result, the peak
rate of UEs supporting 4x4 MIMO fails to reach the theoretical peak rate.
In non-overlapping areas, virtual 4T4R brings resource reuse gains, improves the user-
perceived rate, and increases the average cell throughput.
Network Performance
The following table describes the network performance item that is affected by virtual 4T4R
in comparison with SFN and six-sector or multi-sector networking.

decrease by 3 dB, resulting in narrower
coverage.
6 Engineering Guidelines
4T4R multi-sector reconstruction is recommended if the PRB usage of virtual 4T4R cells
after reconstruction exceeds 50%.
l In medium- or light-load scenarios, you can enable virtual 4T4R based on LampSite
crossed networking to implement CRS-port-based crossed deployment and obtain high-
order rank gains.
DT-based Information
You can obtain the following information from drive tests (DTs) or measurement reports
(MRs).
Load Information
Before virtual 4T4R is enabled, obtain left and right sector counter information on the existing
network, as listed in Table 6-2. Check the load balancing status of two sectors. When load is
unbalanced, PRB resources cannot be reused, decreasing capacity gains after virtual 4T4R is
enabled.

Coverage Planning

decrease by 3 dB, resulting in narrower
coverage.
RRU transmit power is restricted in some countries or regions. For example, the RRU
transmit power specification is 80 w but only 40 w is allowed by local rules and regulations.
If the idle transmit power is assigned to the virtual 4T4R cell, the total transmit power of the
RRU will exceed 40 w though the coverage will not shrink. In such a case, it is
recommended to use the workaround when the RRU has no idle power.
l If the RRU has no idle transmit power,
– When a multimode RRU is used, decrease the transmit power of other RATs as
required and add 3 dB to the virtual 4T4R cell to ensure that the coverage does not
change after the reconstruction.
– When a single mode RRU is used or the transmit power of other RATs in a
multimode RRU cannot be used by LTE, adjust the PA/PB value of the neighboring
cells to ensure that the coverage does not change after the reconstruction.
n If the network-wide PA/PB value is -3/1 before the reconstruction, decrease
the RS power of neighboring cells by 3 dB (that is, change the PA/PB value of
neighboring cells to 0/0).
n If the network-wide PA/PB value is 0/0 before the reconstruction, increase the
RS power of the virtual 4T4R cell by 3 dB (that is, change the PA/PB value to
-3/1).

Counter Monitoring
Virtual 4T4R can be monitored by querying the values of the counters listed in the following
table. If independent-scheduling UEs or joint-scheduling UEs exist, virtual 4T4R takes effect.
The following table describes the counters to be monitored in independent scheduling areas. If
either counter value is not 0, independent-scheduling UEs exist.
Activation observation measures in joint scheduling areas differ based on whether 4R UEs
exist on the live network.

The following two KPIs are used for comparing gains before and after virtual 4T4R is
enabled. Compared with SFN, virtual 4T4R brings gains on medium- and heavy-load cells in
terms of the following two KPIs:
The following KPI is used to monitor the PRB usage before and after virtual 4T4R is enabled.
In most cases, after virtual 4T4R is enabled, the PRB usage decreases for the same network
traffic, thereby reducing network load.
The following indicator can be obtained by using the formula. It is used to analyze the number
of PRBs occupied by joint-scheduling UEs for gain evaluation.
6.7 Troubleshooting
Fault Description
When a TX channel is faulty, the virtual 4T4R cell is downgraded to a normal cell.
Troubleshooting
The alarms listed in Table 6-5 may be generated. For detailed alarm handling measures, see
Alarm Reference of eNodeBs.
After related alarms are cleared, the cell functions as a virtual 4T4R cell again.

CELL D-00100 MIMO channels, this parameter cannot be set. In cells with
1 four or eight TX channels, this parameter can be set.
LST DL 4x4 As defined in 3GPP specifications, the CrsPortNum
CELL LOFD-0 MIMO
01003 / parameter can be set to CRS_PORT_1,
TDLOF DL 4x4 CRS_PORT_2, or CRS_PORT_4. The value
D-00100 MIMO CRS_PORT_1 indicates that one CRS port (port 0) is
3 Based configured. The value CRS_PORT_2 indicates that
on TM3 two CRS ports (ports 0 and 1) are configured. The
LOFD-0 and value CRS_PORT_4 indicates that four CRS ports
01060 TM4 (ports 0, 1, 2 and 3). In values of this parameter,
TDLOF mTnP indicates that the number of TX channels
D-00106 configured for a cell is "m" and the number of CRS
0 ports is "n". The parameter value 4TnP_abcd indicates
that reference signals transmitted over CRS ports a, b,
c, and d are mapped to TX channels 1, 2, 3, and 4 in
an RRU, respectively (The TX channel number here is
for reference only, and is determined based on the
R0A to R0D, or others). The parameter value
8TnP_abcdefgh indicates that reference signals
transmitted over CRS ports a to h are mapped to TX
channels 1 to 8 in an RRU, respectively. Duplicate
numbers of abcd or abcdefgh indicates that virtual
antenna mapping (VAM) is applied, that is, the
reference signals transmitted over the CRS port are
mapped to corresponding TX channels. The parameter
value NOT_CFG indicates that the mapping between
a CRS port and a TX channel in an RRU is not
configured, and CRS ports are mapped to TX channels
in an RRU in a default manner. In TDD cells, "n" in
mTnP must be equal to the CrsPortNum parameter
value. For cells established on LBBPc boards, the
parameter value NOT_CFG takes effect regardless of
the actual parameter setting. This parameter applies
only to LTE FDD and LTE TDD.

LST D-00200 ment resources are available in the cell and can be
SRSCF 3 configured for UEs in the cell. The value
G BOOLEAN_FALSE indicates that no SRS resource is
available in the cell, and therefore no UE in the cell is
configured with SRS resources. This parameter does
not take effect on: (1) FDD cell that is established on
an LBBPc and uses four or more RX antennas. (2)
FDD cell that is established on an LBBPc and uses
extended cyclic prefix (CP) in the uplink. (3) TDD
cell established on an LBBPc. If this parameter does
not take effect on a cell but SRS resources are
available in the cell, SRS resources can be configured
for UEs in the cell. This parameter applies only to

SRSCfg FddSrsC MOD None None Meaning: Indicates the allocation mode of sounding
fgMode SRSCF reference signal (SRS) resources in LTE FDD. This
G parameter must be set when the SrsCfgInd parameter
LST is set to BOOLEAN_TRUE(True). If the
SRSCF FddSrsCfgMode parameter is set to
G DEFAULTMODE(Default Mode), SRS resource
allocation is activated by default after a cell is
established, and SRS resources are allocated to UEs
that access the cell. If this parameter is set to
ADAPTIVEMODE(Adaptive Mode), SRS resource
allocation can be adaptively activated or deactivated
based on the cell load. After this parameter is set to
ADAPTIVEMODE(Adaptive Mode), settings of
parameters SrsAlgoSwitch, SrsSubframeCfg, and
UserSrsPeriod do not take effect. The parameter value
ADAPTIVEMODE(Adaptive Mode) is recommended
in heavy-traffic scenarios where there is a large
number of UEs in the cell. The parameter value
ADAPTIVEMODE(Adaptive Mode) does not apply
to cells established on an LBBPc.This parameter is
valid only in TDD mode.
