Sessions 3 | Date: 23 June 2018 | Case: MCFL (B) and Ethics Discussion

I had to miss the session due to CFA exam getting over by 5 pm. I had talked to the
professor about it once in the previous session.

Sessions 4 | Date: 23 June 2018 | Case: MCFL (B) and Ethics Discussion

The session was taken by Mr. Atul Kumar (Chief Ethics Officer of SBI). Some of the
key take away from the session are:

o Ethics is knowing and doing what is right, not what is easy.

o It is easy to choose between right and wrong but the real ethical dilemma
is choosing between two rights
o A situation was posed in the session where an ethical dilemma posed on
the HR head of MNC in which his brother was being laid off. He had to
choose between being ethical to the family versus the organization. Since
both of them were right there is no right answer but it is important to
choose depending upon the importance of the stakeholder.
o Moral distancing phenomenon – Another situation was stated where
pushing 1 person in front of the bus to save 5 people might not be possible
while the same person can pull the lever which does the same. It shows
how ethical position changes as we distance our self physically from the
dilemma.
o The 2x2 matrix of competence and values attributes of managers:
Most risky Best – should
High
Competence

be rewarded

Less risky Should be

Low

trained

Low High
Values
o Citing the example of Chanda Kochhar the point that it takes huge amount of
time to build reputation, but only one short act to lose it was explained. Thus,
it is crucial to be ethical rather than regretting the decisions later on.
