Basic Machine Design Assignment -2

1. Define
(i) Nominal size and Actual size
(ii) Fits and Tolerance
(iii) Efficiency of riveted joint
(iv) Fundamental Deviation
(v)

2. Draw a double riveted double strap(equal) zig zag butt joint.

3. Draw a double riveted double strap(unequal) zig zag butt joint.
4. Why hole basis system is preferred over shaft basis system?
5. Calculate the tolerance, fundamental deviations and limit of sizes for the shaft designated
as 40 H8/f7. Fundamental deviation for shaft is -5.5D0.41
6. A circular beam 50mm in diameter is welded to a support by means of a fillet weld as
shown in figure. Determine the size of the weld if the permissible shear stress in the weld
is limited to 100MPa.

7. A beam of rectangular cross section is welded to a support by means of fillet welds as shown in
figure. Determine the size of the welds, if the permissible shear stress in the weld is limited to 75
N/mm2.

8. It is required to design a knuckle joint to connect two circular rods subjected to axial
tensile force of 150 kN. Design the joint, assuming the working stress for both the pin
and the rod material are 75 MPa in tension, 60 MPa in shear and 150 MPa in crushing.

9. A 400mm diameter pulley C mounted on a countershaft midway between two bearings

1200mm apart, transmit 50kW power to a machine below it by a flat belt drive. The
power is fed to the countershaft by another pulley D of 300mm diameter is located
300mm to the right of the right hand bearing B. The electric motor vertically below
pulley D provides power to it. The belt tensions on both sides of pulley are vertical and
coefficient of friction between belt and pulley surface is 0.3 and lapangle are 180 0. The
countershaft rotates at 560rpm. Design the shaft considering permissible shear and
normal stresses to be 45 MPa and 70 MPa.

by 30%. Determine the diameter of the shaft, if the permissible shear stress for the shaft
material is 45 MPa.
