 Switch from User to Admin using the Desktop Right click Menu
 Switch from User to Admin using the Start Menu
 Switch from User to Admin using the search Menu
 Notice any difference in the start menu after switching to Admin?
 Notice what happen to the control panel during a switch?

 Switch to Admin and start a terminal from the Tools Menu
 Switch to Admin and start a terminal from the Search Menu

• Operations
 Identify the 2 power menus and restart the Thin Client

• (Advanced) Registry Editor


 Switch to Admin, Search for registry and start the registry editor

• Hints
– The registry editor is hidden by default but can be accessed using the HP ThinPro

 Restart the Wizard using the Lab 1 Tools Menu
 Go thru the Wizard and review available pages
 Connect the HP Guest Wireless using the network page of the Wizard
 (Advanced) Using the registry editor, change the registry key to re-enable the
wizard for next boot.
 (Advanced) Using the registry editor, customize the Wizard pages by removing
the network setup ; reboot and test
 (Advanced) Using the registry editor, customize the Wizard to only show the
Network configuration ; reboot and test

– Wizard registry configuration is under root/config-wizard

• Desktop Connection Creation Workflow • Notes


 Start default Web Browser Connection (Make sure you're connected to the network)
 Notice visible change on the Icon when a connection is active or not
 Create a New Web Browser Connection using Desktop Right Click Menu
 Edit the Connection using right click on the icon and change home page to
hp.com/go/thin
 Identify two or three ways to rename connections
 Make a copy of an existing connection
 Switch to Admin and create an connection as Admin
 Switch back to user and compare Admin connection VS User connection (Icon right click
menu)
 Hide Connection icons from Desktop using the connection edit menu (Icon right click
menu)
 Locate the Connections elsewhere..

• Connection Manager
 Find the Connection Manager in the tools menu (Admin) and manipulate connections
 Make the Connection Manager available for the user on boot

– Connection are available on the desktop, in the start menu and in the connection manager
– Connection Manager settings is available is in the Customization Center that is accessible thru

• Taskbar • Notes
 Identify different elements of the Task Bar
 Evaluate the new Volume mixer if you have a USB headset on hands try it!
 Change the Taskbar to auto hide and on the top of the screen
 (Advanced) Change the Taskbar size to be 500 pixels using the registry editor

• Search
 Switch to user and access the Search Menu using CTRL+ALT+S shortcut
 In the search bar, click on the search icon to see the list of all available applications
This list will be different when used as Admin or User
 Start one of your connection using the search menu
 Create a Connection using the search menu

• Start Menu
 As an administrator
Setup the Thin Client to prevent user to reboot or shutdown
Allow the user the run the text editor and the snipping tool
Switch back to user and confirm changes are successful

• Hints
– Taskbar settings are available in the Customization Center or in the registry under root/Dashboard
– Once the registry is modified, it may be required to apply settings to the system using the registry editor, right
click on the folder and using the apply menu
– Power Menu Options are available in Power Manager

• Standard Background Changes • Notes


 Switch to Admin and Locate the background customization application
 Set the background as a solid color
 Set the background as a gradient color
 Try the Mars theme
 Using a USB key, set a custom image as background

• Advanced theming: Create your own theme with a custom background and a
HP logo in the center
 Open a terminal
 Go to the theme folder. # cd /etc/hptc-zero-login/styles
 Copy the default folder to your own theme # cp -r default TechU2018
 Step into the TechU2018 folder and edit the bgConfig.rtf using vi or hptc-text-editor
 Set appropriate background and logo properties and Save
Change values and be careful with syntax
 Restart Background Manager and test your new theme.

Locate the Control Panel menu in the startup menu and launch it • Notes
Switch to Administrator, restart the control panel and notice the differences
Using the Control Panel built-in search, locate date and time setup and run it.
Close the Control Panel and search date and time in the search start menu and
launch it.
Switch to administrator and using the Customization Center, Allow the the user
to change the background (Background Manager) and certificates
Switch back to user and check the results (A Logout may be required for now)
Within each category, there are special applications with an extra icon next to
them. Notice which applications have this icon. (We’ll talk about it). Try to
launch one
In the Control Panel, select the Keyboard manager, attempt to change
keyboard but instead of applying the changes, select another item from this
category. Notice what happens!

– Each control panel applets can still be launched as stand alone applications

Custom Control Panel entries • Notes


 Switch to Admin and Open a Terminal.
 Edit and review content of/etc/hptc-control-panel/applications/hptc-mouse.desktop
 Copy /etc/hptc-control-panel/applications/hptc-mouse.desktop to /etc/hptc-control-
panel/applications/test.desktop
 Edit the newly created test.desktop and change the Name field and the X-HPTC-
Category to Hardware
 Launch the Control panel and observe the difference
Custom Tools : GlxGears
 Copy hptc-xterm.desktop into gears.desktop
 Edit the file and changes Name to GlxGears, Exec to glxgears
 Remove the X-HPTC-ExecAsRoot line
 Logout, Switch back to Admin and review the Content of the Tool Menus
 Start you new App
 Question: What field decide it is in the Tools Menu and not in the Control Panel?

To prepare for next Lab we will do a factory reset of our ThinPro OS
 Switch to Admin and locate the factory reset program in either the search menu
or the control panel
 Factory reset the system
 (Advanced) Open a terminal and perform a factory reset from the command line

• Hints
– Within a terminal, you can find the factory reset command by typing fact and
pressing Tab to display available command starting with fact.
– The command name is factory-reset.sh, Using the -h parameter will show you
available options. Try running with the -y parameter

 In the Customization Center, switch to Smart Zero and pick Web Browser
Connection.
 Set the URL to www.hp.com/go/thin
 Inspect the new taskbar location, content and review content of the ThinPro Start
Menu
 Switch to Admin and review again content of the Start Menu
 Choose Create a Connection > Citrix > set URL to storefront.citrix.com

ThinPro Registry can be manipulated by regeditor or mclient command line


• Notes
 Switch to Admin and Open a Terminal, try the following commands, observe and capture notes.
 mclient shows all the command parameters
 mclient get root shows all the modules
 mclient get root/Dashboard
 mclient get root/Dashboard/General/PanelDockSide shows key value
 mclient get root/Dashboard/General/PanelDockSide regexp show possible values for
that key
 mclient set root/Dashboard/General/PanelDockSide top
 mclient changes shows pending changes
 mclient commit save pending changes to registry
 mclient apply root/Dashboard update system
 mclient set root/Dashboard/General/PanelDockSide left
 mclient commit save pending changes to registry
 mclient apply root/Dashboard update system plugin
Using similar commands try to change the following keys under root/Dashboard
 Auto Hide the TaskBar
 Change LengthToScreenSide to 0 and Change Length to 400
 Explore the content of root/Dashboard/GUI and change some keys value
 Apply changes to the system and notice differences

• Hints
– Mclient get [key] type will tell you a registry key type
– Boolean key value could be 0 or 1
