## Q-1) what is draft tube and mention various types

Q-2) what is governing of reaction turbine and cavitations in turbine?
Q-3) Derive an expression of specific speed of hydraulic turbines.
Q-4) what do you mean by characteristics curves of a turbine name and explain any two
characteristics curves.
Q-5) A reaction turbine works at 450 rpm under a head of 120m. Its dia. At inlet is 1.2m and the
flow area is 0.4 m.The angles made by absolute and relative velocity at inlet are 20⁰ and 60⁰
respectively with the tangential velocity Determine:- The volume flow rate ii) The power
developed iii) Hydraulic effiencency.(Runner vanes are radial at outlet)
Q-6) An inward flow reaction turbine the head on the turbine is 32m. The external and internal
diameter are 1.44m and 0.72m. the velocity of flow through the runner is constant and equal to
3m/s. the guide blade angle is 100 and runner vanes are rigid at inlet if the discharge outlet is
radial determine :- i) The speed of the turbine ii) The vane angle at outlet of the runner and iii)
Hydraulic Efficiency. (Runner vanes are radial at inlet)
Q-7 ) An inward flow reaction turbine is supplied 0.233m3/s. of water under a head of 11m. The
wheel vanes are radial at inlet and the inlet dia is twice of the outlet diameter. The velocity of flow
is constant and equal to 1.83m/s. The wheel makes 370rpm. Determine:- i) Guide vane angle ii)
Inlet and outlet diameter of the wheel and iii) the width of the wheel at inlet and exit Assume that
the discharge is radial and there is no losses in the wheel Take speed ratio=0.7 Neglect the
thickness of the vanes.
Q-8) The following data to an inward flow reaction turbine are Net head=86.4m, speed of the
runner =650rpm, shaft power available =397 kW, Ratio of wheel width to wheel dia at inlet =0.10,
Ratio of the outer diameter to inner dia=0.5, flow ratio=0.17, Hydraulic efficiency=95% , overall
dimensions and blade angle of the turbine.
Q-9) The following date to a Francis Turbine:- Net Head=70m, Speed=700rpm, Shaft
Power=330kW, Overall efficiency =85%, hydraulic efficiency=92% flow ratio=0.22, Breadth
ratio=0.1 Outer diameter of runner =2* inner diameter of runner , velocity of flow= const. outlet
discharge =radial , The thickness of vanes occupy 6% of circumferential area of the runner:- i)
Diameter of runner at inlet and outlet ii) Width of the wheel at inlet iii) Guide blade angle and
iv) Runner vane angle at inlet and outlet respectively.
Q-10) An inward flow turbine runner has an outer diameter of 0.6m and an inner diameter of 0.3m
and runs at 750rpm. The radial velocity of flow at inlet and exit is 6m/s. water enters the runner
making an angle of 12⁰. To the direction of motion of the blades at inlet. It leaves the runner
radially. The mass flow rate is 1 kg/s. calculate i) Power developed ii) Angle between the relative
velocity of water and tangential velocity of the runner at exit..
Q-11) The following data to a Kaplan Turbine:- Power at available at shaft=22500 kW, head
=20m, speed=150rpm, hydraulic efficiency=95%, overall efficiency=88%, Outer diameter of the
runner =4.5m , Diameter of the hub=2m, Assuming that the turbine discharge without whirl at exit
, determine the runner vane angles at the hub and at the outer periphery.
Q-12) A Kaplan turbine develops 22000 kW an average of head of 35m. Assuming a speed ratio 2
flow ratio of 0.6, diameter of the boss equal to 0.35 times the diameter of the runner and overall
efficiency of 88 percent, calculate the diameter, speed and specific speed of the turbine.
Q-13) Kaplan turbine has a hydraulic efficiency of 90% and a mechanical efficiency of 93% with a
runner diameter of 6m and boss diameter of 1.8m if the discharge of the turbine is 180m3/s.
Calculate the head on the turbine and the shaft power of the turbine. Assume that there is no whirl
at outlet and the discharge is free. Neglect losses in the turbine.

is immersed in water. If the atmospheric pressure head is 10.3m of water and loss of head due to
friction in the draft tube is equal to 0.2* velocity head at outlet of the tube, Determine, i) Pressure
head at inlet and ii) Efficiency of the draft tube
