What’s Happen and will happen by Ivan Lazure, N1OXA

Last month we provided radio communications for the Lewiston-Auburn MS

Walk on Saturday April 28, 2007. There were eight club members that
participate: N1WFO Rick James, N1NYW Richard Knight, N1OXA Ivan
Lazure, N1RGO Herb Masse, NJ1ZRL Pete Thuotte, KB5SUD Bob Sessuns,
WE1U Dave Lowe, and N1KAT Bill Woodhead. The MS Society wants me
to express their appreciation for our help in the MS Walk.

The Androscoggin Amateur Radio Club 2007 Field Day will be at the
Auburn Mall. This year were will have two Tents, one for SSB (voice) and
one for CW and Digital modes. We plan to have Antennas from 160 meters
to 440 cm. The club is planing to have a BBQ on Saturday night with Hot
dogs, Hamburgers, and soda. So start planning for June 23, 2007 at 10 am.
At the June 6, 2007 AARC meeting we will be asking for input and help on
what and how the field day will operate. So come to the meeting and be ready
to give your thoughts and ideas. If you can’t attend the meeting you can
contact me by phone 784-0350 or email: ilazure@roadrunner.com.
Andy Club Minutes by Dick Knight N1NYW
A meeting of the Androscoggin Amateur Radio Club was held Wednesday May 2, 2007 at Russell
Park in Lewiston Maine. In attendance: n1llu, w1scm and son Charles, kb1cdu, wa1eoj, n1mdl, kb1doi,
n1jd, kb5sud, kb1osa, wb1hfy, kb1iec, n1kat, n1svb, wa1scq, n1oxa, kb1osm, n1nyw.

The meeting was called to order at 7 PM by President Bill Woodhead n1kat. Because there was no
meeting in March because of the storm there were no minutes to approve.

Treasurer Ivan n1oxa read the Treasurers report. Ken kb1cdu moved to accept the report and was
seconded by Harold n1llu. Vote: approved.

Ivan went on to explain the income and expenses of the hamfest. There were 399 people with 21
volunteers and speakers with free tickets. Ivan explained the need for a back up person to co-chair the
event next year. If you are interested talk to Ivan.

Ivan told about the communications test on Tuesday May 8. The new communications truck in
Greene will be part of the tests along with other members in other locations to see who can hear who
from different locations. Ivan says that Livermore Falls is a bad spot for communications.

Ivan also would like to thank the ham operators and walkers who turned out to work the MS Walk.
The weather was good in spite of the forecast.

Bill read a thank you letter from the QCWA thanking the Andy club for the table at the hamfest /
convention. It was signed by Phil Young w1jth. The club says it was good to have them with us. Bill
noted that Phil and QCWA are the only ones to send a thank you note every year.

Bill reports that he had contacted the Balloon Festival about using ham radio but so far has not heard
back from them.

Bill noted that at field day this year there will be separate tents for voice and digital modes to help cut
down on qrm. We still have to confirm the location of the field day.

Bill noted that the Ramada is already booked on the last weekend of March so the convention /
hamfest will be on the first weekend of April 2008.

Bill also mentioned that work is on going getting the antennas moved from the old Red Cross
building to its’ new headquarters across from Governors restaurant.

Bill Woodhead wrapped up the meeting by proposing to transfer $1000 to the scholarship fund.. Bill
n1kat moved to transfer the $1000 and Al wa1scq seconded the motion. Vote: approved.

Brian n1mdl moved to adjourn and Andy kb1doi seconded. Vote: approved at 7:38 PM.
2007 ARES/RACES Communication Test by Ivan Lazure, N1OXA
On Tuesday May 8, 2007 at 1830, 13 members fanned out all over Androscoggin
County to test our communications. Almost 2 hours later, we have a better idea of what
needs to be done to enhance the radio communications though out the county. One
observation that I can make is that Simplex works, we were able to talk from Durham to
Livermore with no problems. So with antennas and small portable towers it will get
better. I want to thank everyone who participated:

First, Tim, AA1UT, Androscoggin EMA Deputy Director, and the ARES/RACES
Members: Andy KB1DOI, Brian N1MDL, Cory N1URA, Beckie KB1IRZ, Dave
WE1U, Earl N1SVB, Ivan N1OXA, Jerry KB1NHD, John N1JD, Peter N1ZRL, Rick
N1WFO, and Steven KB1GVT.

The next meeting will be on June 12, 2007 at 1800, at the Lewiston Central Fire Station.
We will be reviewing the results of the Communication Test and what are the next steps.

The next ARES/RACES Net will be on May 29, 2007, at 1830 on the 146.61 repeater.
We will discuss if we should have weekly net instead of monthly.
