EQUATION THAT BECOME QUADRATIC

“In this equation, x represents a variable whereas a, b, and c are constant with a not equal to zero. If the
value of a is 0, the equation will become a linear equation. To elaborate the equation more, a is the
quadratic coefficient, b is the linear coefficient, and c is the constant or free term.

Standard Form = ax^2 + bx+c=0

QUADRATIC EQUATION BY FACTORING:

To check your answers, you can substitute both values directly into the original equation and
see if you get a true sentence for each. You can use the Principle of Zero Products to solve
quadratic equations in the form ax2 + bx + c = 0. First factorthe expression, and set
each factor equal to 0.

Example: check: x^2-7x=2=-10

X^2 -7x+2 = -10 (4)^2-7(4)+2=-10 (3)^2-7(3)+2=-10

X^2 -7x+2+10=0 16-28+2=-10 9-21+2=-10

X^2 -7x+12=0 -12=2=-10 -12+2=-10

(x-4) (x-3)=0 -10=-10 -10=-10

Let x-4=0 x-3=0

X=4 x=3
QUADRATIC EQUATION BY EXTRACTING THE SQUARE:

To solve this equation by factoring, first square and then put it in standard form, equal to zero,
by subtracting 25 from both sides. Factor and then apply the zero-product property. When an
equation is in this form, we can obtain the solutions in fewer steps byextracting the roots.

Example:
X^2 -4=0
X^2=4
square root x^2 = square root 4
x=2

check:
x=2
(2)^2 =4
4=4
QUADRATIC EQUATION BY COMPLETING THE SQUARE:

Steps involved in solving quadratic equation by using completing the square:

Consider the quadratic equation .

Step 1: Check whether the coefficient of x2, a is 1 or other than 1.

Step 2: If , then make it as 1 by dividing each side by a.

Step 3: Move the constant term to the right side of the quadratic equation.

Step 4: Take one-half of the coefficient of x and square it.

Step 5: Add the result obtained in Step 4 to both sides of the equation and complete the square.

Step 6: Express the terms in the left side of the equation as a square.

Step 7: Simplify the terms in the right side of the equation.

Step 8: Equate the result of Step 6 with the result of Step 7.

Step 9: Solve the final equation obtained in Step 8 and obtain the required roots.

Example:

X^2 -7X+2= -10

X^2 -7X= -10-2
X^2 -7X= -12
X^2 -7X+(7/2)^2= -12+(7/2)^2
= -12+49/4
= -48=49/4

=4
(X-7/2)^2 =square root of 4
x-7/2 = square root of 4
x-7/2 = plus minus 2
x= 7/2 plus minus ½
x=7 plus minus 1 divided by 2
x=7-1/2 = 6/2 =3
x=7+1/2 = 8/2 = ¼ =4
x=3
x=4
check: x^2 -7x+2=-10
(3)^2-7(3)+2=-10 (4)^2-7(4)+2=-10
9-21+2=-10 16-28+2=-10
-12+2=-10 -12+2=-10
-10=-10 -10=-10
QUADRATIC EQUATION BY QUADRATIC FORMULA:

Quadratic Formula. The quadratic formula, , is used in algebra to solve quadratic equations
(polynomial equations of the second degree). The general form of a quadratic equation is ,
where x represents a variable, and a, b, and c are constants, with . A quadratic equation has
two solutions, called roots.

Example:
x^2-7x+2=-10
x^2-7x+12=0

a=1 b=-7 c=12

x= -b plus minus square root (b)^2-4ac divided by 2

x= -(-7) plus minus square root (-7)^2=-4(1)(12) divided by 2(1)
x= 7 plus minus square root 49-48 divided by 2
x=7 plus minus square 1 divided by 2
x= 7+1/2 = 8/2 =4
x= 7-1/2 = 6/2 = 3

check: x^2 -7x+12 =0

(4)^2 -7(4)+12=0
16-28+12=0
-12=12=0
0=0

(3)^2-7(3)+12=0
9-21+12=0
-12+12=0
0=0
