“In this equation, x represents a variable whereas a, b, and c are constant with a not equal to zero. If the
value of a is 0, the equation will become a linear equation. To elaborate the equation more, a is the
quadratic coefficient, b is the linear coefficient, and c is the constant or free term.
To check your answers, you can substitute both values directly into the original equation and
see if you get a true sentence for each. You can use the Principle of Zero Products to solve
quadratic equations in the form ax2 + bx + c = 0. First factorthe expression, and set
each factor equal to 0.
X=4 x=3
QUADRATIC EQUATION BY EXTRACTING THE SQUARE:
To solve this equation by factoring, first square and then put it in standard form, equal to zero,
by subtracting 25 from both sides. Factor and then apply the zero-product property. When an
equation is in this form, we can obtain the solutions in fewer steps byextracting the roots.
Example:
X^2 -4=0
X^2=4
square root x^2 = square root 4
x=2
check:
x=2
(2)^2 =4
4=4
QUADRATIC EQUATION BY COMPLETING THE SQUARE:
Step 3: Move the constant term to the right side of the quadratic equation.
Step 5: Add the result obtained in Step 4 to both sides of the equation and complete the square.
Step 6: Express the terms in the left side of the equation as a square.
Step 9: Solve the final equation obtained in Step 8 and obtain the required roots.
Example:
Quadratic Formula. The quadratic formula, , is used in algebra to solve quadratic equations
(polynomial equations of the second degree). The general form of a quadratic equation is ,
where x represents a variable, and a, b, and c are constants, with . A quadratic equation has
two solutions, called roots.
Example:
x^2-7x+2=-10
x^2-7x+12=0
(3)^2-7(3)+12=0
9-21+12=0
-12+12=0
0=0
