ECE230 Electromagnetics and Wave Propagation
Time: Three hours Maximum: 100 Marks
Answer all questions
PART A (10 x 3 = 30 Marks)
1. A sphere of radius 0.2m, which is centered at the origin contains electric charge of density
2/(x2 +y2)1/2 C/m3. Find the total charge contained in the sphere.

2. The temperature in a room is given by T = x2+y2- z . If a mosquito located at (1, 1, 2) fly in the
direction of maximum temperature change, find the direction.

3. Calculate the electric field intensity everywhere in space due to an electron located in space
with a charge 1.6 × 10-19C. Find the force the electron exerts on a dust particle charged with a
total charge of 3.2 × 10-19C and located at a distance of 3m.

4. A stroke of lightning can be regarded as a filamentary line current. If a lightning stroke with a
current of 50 kA occurs 100 m away from your house, calculate the magnetic flux density at
your house.

5. Find the magnitude of polarization in a dielectric material with r = 2.8, if the magnitude of
electric flux density is 3 x 10-4 C/m2.

6. A train travels at 80 km/hr between a pair of rails that are 2.5 m apart. Assuming that the
vertical component of the earth magnetic field along the rails is 70 m Wb/m 2 and that the other
fields are negligibly small, calculate the voltage developed between the rails.

7. The magnetic field component of a wave is given by

Determine (a) the direction of wave propagation, (b) the wavelength, and (c) the wave velocity.

8. A 20 MHz uniform plane wave propagates through a lossy material so that it has a phase shift of
0.5 rad/m and its amplitude is reduced by 20% for every meter travelled. Calculate the
attenuation constant and wave velocity.

9. A plane wave in free space is normally incident on the interface with a perfect dielectric for
which r = 3. Compute the magnitudes of the reflection coefficient and transmission coefficient.

10. A uniform plane wave is incident at an angle i= 45 degrees on a pair of dielectric slabs joined
together as shown in fig.1. Determine the angles of transmission t1 and t2 in the slabs. In

11. In a certain conducting region H= yz(x2 +y2 ) ax –y2xz ay + 4x2y2 az A/m. Determine
a) The current density J at (5,2,-3)
b) Current passing through x= -1, 0 < y, z < 2

12. Given ρv =10/r2mC/m3 if 1< r < 4 and 0 if r > 4 .Find the net flux crossing the surface
with r =2m and r = 6m. Also determine D at r =1 and r =5m.

13. Evaluate Stokes’s theorem for the field

14. When it becomes necessary to protect devices from over-voltages such as produced by
lightning, ground planes are employed. A very large sheet of conducting material (used as
ground plane) may be assumed to be infinite and carries a surface current density of 10 A/m.
Using Ampere’s circuital law calculate the magnetic field intensity everywhere in space.

15. A certain signal generator produces an uniform plane wave in free space having a wavelength
of 12 cm. When this wave travels through a lossless material of unknown characteristics, its
wavelength changes to 8 cm. The amplitude of electric field intensity is 50 V/m and of
magnetic field is 0.1 A/m. Calculate a) frequency of the generator b) r c r.

16. A manufacturer produces a ferrite material with 750 and S/m at 10 MHz.
a) Would you classify the material as lossless, lossy or conducting?
b) Calculate and .
c) Determine the phase difference between two points separated by 2m.
d) Find the intrinsic impedance

17. Let the potential be

19. a) At a particular frequency, a medium has =0.1 Np/m and = 250 |35.26 . Calculate the
loss tangent, loss angle, and wavelength.
b) A uniform plane wave in air is partially reflected from the surface of a material whose
properties are unknown. Measurements of the electric field in the region in front of the
interface yield a 1.5 m spacing between maxima with first maximum occurring 0.75 m from
the interface. A standing wave ratio of 5 is measured. Determine the intrinsic impedance of
the unknown material.

20. A 1 MHz antenna carried by an airplane flying over the ocean surface generates a wave that
approaches the water surface in the form of a normally incident plane wave with an electric
field magnitude of 1.0 kV/m. The relative permittivity and permeability of the sea water are 81
and unity, respectively, and the conductivity is 4 S/m. The plane is trying to communicate a
message to a submarine resting at a depth d below the water surface and the minimum
detectable signal required by the submarine’s receiver is 10 μV/m. What is the maximum 'd' for
which successful communication is possible?
