•  Omitting Mustahab matter will not be

•  Obligatory
•  Muslim are obliged to consume food and
partake in services that are Halal
(permissible)
•  To abstain taking food or indulging in
services that are Haram (prohibited)

PRINCIPLES OF HALAL & HARAM IN
ISLAM
§  All things created by Allah are halal, with few
exceptions that are specifically prohibited
§  To make halal or haram is the right of Allah alone
§  The basic reason for the prohibition of things are
due to impurity and harmfulness
§  What is permitted halal is sufficient and what is
prohibited haram is then superfluous
§  Whatever is conducive to the prohibited haram is
in itself is prohibited haram
§  Falsely representing unlawful haram as lawful halal
is prohibited
§  Doubtful things should be avoided

RATIONALE OF PROHIBITION
§  Carrion and dead animals are unfit
for human consumption because the
decaying process leads to the
formation of chemicals that are
harmful for human
§  Blood that is drained from an
animal contains harmful bacteria,
products of metabolism, and toxins
§  Intoxicants are considered harmful
for the nervous system, affecting the
sense and human judgments,
leading to social and family
problems and in some cases even
death
§  Swine serves as a vector for
pathogenic worms to enter the
human body. Infections by
Trichinella spirals and Taenia solium
are common.

AL QURAN
•  “O ye who believe! Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you,
and render thanks to Allah if it is (indeed) He, whom ye worship.” (Al-Baqara
2:172)
•  “Forbidden to you (for food) are: Al-Maytatah (the dead animals), blood, the
flesh of swine, and the meat of that which has been slaughtered as a
sacrifice for others than Allâh, or has been slaughtered for idols, etc., or on
which Allâh's Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering, and that
which has been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong
fall, or by the goring of horns - and that which has been (partly) eaten by a
wild animal - unless you are able to slaughter it (before its death) - and that
which is sacrificed (slaughtered) on An-Nusub[] (stone altars). (Forbidden)
also is to use arrows seeking luck or decision, (all) that
is Fisqun (disobedience of Allâh and sin). This day, those who disbelieved
have given up all hope of your religion, so fear them not, but fear Me. This
day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you,
and have chosen for you Islâm as your religion. But as for him who is forced
by severe hunger, with no inclination to sin (such can eat these above-
mentioned meats), then surely, Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Al-
Maidah 5:3)

HADITH

of you eats food, he should say: O Allah, bless
us in it, and give us food (or nourishment)
better than it.” (Hadith Abu Dawod,
narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas)
•  The Apostle of Allah prohibited eating the
animal which feeds on filth and drinking
from its milk. (Hadith Abu Dawod, narrated
by Abdullah ibn Umar)

QIYAS

•  Definition: equalization or analogical. The


process of analogical reasoning in which the
teachings of the hadith are compared with
those of Quran.
