Cold Tire Temperature Setting

If your inner and outer temperature is higher than your middle temperature, it means tire pressure is
too low. I.e. the tire wall is supporting the car weight.

If middle temperature is higher than inner and outer temperature, it means tire pressure is too high.

But looking at test runs using Skip Barber and Audi R8, it shows that even at lowest tire pressure
and doing steady state cornering, the middle temperature never drop below outer temperature.

And the temperature difference between tire inner and mid temperature is much smaller than mid
and outer.

This indicates that iRacing still allows to run very low tire initial pressure without concern that tire
wall is supporting the car weight.

Skippy Tuning Guide

The peak temperature range for actual FB Goodrich radial tires like those on the Skippy is 160 - 230
deg F (70 - 110 deg C). It can be hard to get to these temperatures in the Skippy on iRacing. Most
people cannot drive that hard.

Johnny Guindi on Skippy pressure

Anything below 20psi is good. Tracks with many fast corners will favor something like 19psi since
you'll have less sidewall flex and the car should feel a little bit more stable when cornering at high
speed. Slower tracks with tighter corners prefer closer to 17.4psi since you'll generally get a tiny bit
more low speed grip that way. In any case, it's not a very big difference between the two unless
you're using something clearly to high like 21+psi.

It doesn't matter as much here as it does with any other car on the service. If anything, I think 18psi
cold pressures should give you about 160kPa hot pressures almost regardless of the weather.

We all have issues with a hot track, u can use bit more pressure on a hot track but u will need to take
more care on the tires to not cook them, in iRacing we dont have info like "this
temps/pressures=perfect" like some manufacturers IRL do. The best tip is put that temp / pressure,
run a good amount of laps within half a second and then change the pressures and do the same to be
able to compare if its best or not for degradation and feeling.

Arjan de Vrede on Skippy pressure

hey @m3thuselah it seems that less pressures give more grip.. we've been running this with the top
guys since 2016 somewhere.. before that we were all running with about 19-20psi.. it seems 17.4 is
quickest for now.. it's purely testing and feel to be honest.. sometimes when i want a bit more
understeer i up the fronts or if i want a bit more oversteer i up the rear pressures..

Wilson

for temps I like to keep low high 180's low 190's in the Pro Mazda but since I have driven the Skip
in a while I am not sure what they use

Conclusion

Skippy cold tire pressure. 17.4 PSI for slow corner track. 18 psi for fast corner track.

Brake Bias Setting

Set brake bias to control car behaviour during braking (hard braking or trail braking)

BB Setting Using Feel

If the car oversteer when braking and turning, increase brake bias.

If the car understeer (slow to turn in) when braking and turning, decrease brake bias.
Fine Tuning BB Setting Using Telemetry

Check wheel speed, if wheel speed on a wheel decrease during hard braking it means lock up has
occured.

If lock up at front wheel, decrease brake bias.

If lock up at rear wheel, increase brake bias.

For RUF, start with higher brake bias (3-5 steps higher than baseline set up), once you're
comfortable with the track and find optimal maximum entry speed, reduce brake bias.

Camber Setting Using Telemetry

Ideal Inner and Outer Tire Temp

0-2 deg C (0- 4 deg F) difference between outer and inner temp for steady state cornering

2.5 - 5.5 deg C (5-10 deg F) difference between outer and inner temp for circuit setting

Note that the driver needs to push the car up to the traction limit before setting up camber.

A car that is not pushed to the limit will show high difference between outer and inner tire temp
even though the camber is correctly set up.

And some circuit i.e. circuit with lots of straight means front tire is not used for cornering, hence
exhibit higher difference between outer and inner temp though the cambler is correctly set up.

Conclusion is
Setup car camber in steady state condition. For high speed corner circuit, use the skid pad. For low
speed corner circuit, use Lanier speedway.

Setting Car based on Front Rear Relative Tire Temperature

Higher front tires temperature indicates push/ understeer.

Tire Pressure Spring ARB

Soften front Decrease Decrease Decrease

Stiffen rear Increase Increase Increase

Higher rear tires temperature indicates loose/ oversteer.

Tire Pressure Spring ARB

Stiffen front Increase Increase Increase

Soften rear Decrease Decrease Decrease

Note the car needs to be pushed to the traction limit before setting the car based on relative tire
temperature.

The driver need to use baseline setup and familiarize with the new car/ track before changing setup.
Do not compensate driver error with car setup.

And some circuit i.e. circuit with lots of straight means front tire is not used for cornering, hence
exhibit lower front tire temperatures.
