Introduction

Promat – the Brand

For more than 4 decades now, Promat has been synonymous
with high quality solutions based on a wide range of high
performance insulation materials and systems for a variety of
market segments.

Calcium silicate products represent a key core business for the

Promat Group in thermal insulation, and Promat brands such
as PROMATECT®, PROMASIL®, MONOLUX®, DURATEC® and
MONALITE® are recognised benchmarks for calcium silicate
products worldwide.

Production, R&D and Health & Safety

Promat is the market leader in calcium silicate technology,

our full range of calcium silicate products are manufactured
at five manufacturing sites in the UK, Belgium, Italy and China.

Each manufacturing plant focuses on a specific technology in line

“ Promat is the worldwide
leading manufacturer of
with our global strategy based on cost leadership by optimisation calcium silicate insulation

of technologies and “best fit” of production technology. Different
manufacturing technologies create calcium silicate products with
different properties, characteristics and advantages which enables
products
Promat to manufacture tailormade products based on customer
specifications.

The most advanced calcium silicate technology is registered by

Promat under the trademark PROMAXON®.

This unique technology has been developed by our highly

qualified, multi skilled team at Promat Research and Technology
Centre (PRTC), based in Tisselt, Belgium.

The process, developed in our research laboratories at PRTC

(Mineral and Matrix Engineering), enables the production of products
with superior properties. This is achieved by controlling
the crystal growth of temperature-stable phases, together with
the porosity, and forming preferred crystal shapes and aggregate
structures. Particles are formed with a size of around 60 μm
consisting of spherical shells with very large numbers of fine
needle-shaped crystals and a core interior with fewer but larger
needle crystals.

4
Throughout the Promat Group, only the highest quality is
acceptable. All manufacturing facilities are certified to
ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001, ensuring world class
products that are manufactured at consistent high quality.

We believe passionately in preserving our environment for future

generations. In keeping with our on-going focus on health and
safety issues, the Promat Group complies with REACH, an important
European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use
(EC 1907/2006).

Calcium silicates are not classified as dangerous

substances by REACH. The processing dust is
biosoluble. Only general inhalable dust limits have to
be observed. If the dust limit is exceeded by processing
or machining the material, localised extraction is
recommended. Please follow the instructions outlined
in our Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

As with all insulation materials, a small amount of irreversible
shrinkage will occur during exposure to heat. It is a result of
dehydration which occurs with structural changes. With Promat

1. High performance calcium silicates

Low density calcium silicate boards are very efficient

insulating products. They have a low thermal conductivity
which leads to low heat losses.

The very light insulation systems also reduce the heat

storage of the lining. These materials are stable up to
1050 °C and classified as A1, non-combustible according
to EN 13501-1 and building material class DIN 4102.

Low density calcium silicates are the “classic” back-up

insulation in combination with dense refractories, insulating
bricks and castables for a broad range of applications. They
are very cost effective due to their price/performance in
comparison with other insulating products.
PROMASIL® calcium silicates

Installation is much faster when compared to conventional

insulating bricks. Low density calcium silicates should not
be used as the front exposure layer in high temperature
applications as their low thermal conductivity and large size
can lead to thermal stresses.

The material is hygroscopic. When installed with castables

a protective layer such as waxed paper, a plastic foil, or an
impregnation coating is advised. The Promat® Impregnation
2000 can be applied in our factory or by the customer on
site.

2. Structural calcium silicates

Structural calcium silicate products from Promat are asbestos

free thermal insulators that can be used as functional
supporting components in a construction.

As such, these structural insulating products are versatile

materials combining good thermal insulation, high thermal
stability and structural integrity within a wide range of
temperatures up to 1000 °C. They are the preferred choice
for high performance mechanical insulation in harsh industrial
environments in a wide variety of industrial sectors.

Our structural insulation products are based on a proprietary

engineered mineral matrix formula using the latest advances
in calcium silicate technology. These products are available
as large sized sheets, made to measure boards or even as 3D
high definition finished machined components created to our
MONOLUX® shaped part
customer’s specification.

Calcium silicates for non-ferrous

These engineered calcium silicate boards are insulating
‘ceramics’ for use in conveying, containing and forming molten
aluminum and other non-ferrous metals.

The material is specially heat treated to minimise the structural

changes during the application.

They have superior structural integrity, low thermal

conductivity and minimal or no shrinkage up to the maximum
exposure temperature in use which is typically around 850 °C.
Typical parts are nozzles, floats, spouts, hot top rings,
ascending pipes and box covers.

High strength electrical insulation

These insulating technical ‘ceramics’ are engineered high density
boards that have originally been developed to be a high temperature
replacement for asbestos boards. Due to their very high mechanical
strength and electrical resistance combined with minimal shrinkage,
they are generally preferred for applications up to 1000 °C where
good electrical resistance is required. Examples include arc chutes,
support members for heating elements, hot press insulation, and dust-
free linings in heat treatment furnaces for electronics.

The material is hygroscopic which can influence the electrical

resistance. Heat treatment to eliminate the moisture is necessary.

The outstanding performance characteristics of DURATEC®- XP make

it the best choice in terms of efficiency and durability when compared
to any other similar product for replacement of asbestos boards in
DURATEC® application
induction furnaces.

Value to the customer

Using a high performance insulation with both thermal and electrical protection properties again simplifies design by minimising
the number of components necessary. A “one insulation does it all” material is quite obviously the most cost effective way of
meeting your design challenge.

4. Composite insulation boards
Composite insulation boards:

insulating core material which is covered by either steel PROMATHERM®-VE 100, -150

DURASTEEL®
A classic application for these products is industrial dryers
operating in the temperature range of 80 °C up to 400 °C.
The main advantage of large-sized prefabricated elements is
the fast installation onto a lightweight steel construction
for furnace and plant sections.

DURASTEEL® is a composite insulating board made of a

calcium silicate core reinforced on both sides by galvanised
and perforated steel sheet coverings.

The composite is mechanicaly resilient and can be used as

a supporting construction element, as a heat shield against
sparks and metal splashes, and as insulating partition walls.

Promat® Impregnation 2000 can be used as a special agent

to achieve a water repellent (hydrophobic) surface. The water
repellancy is effective after full hardening of approx. 48 h at 20 °C.
At higher temperature the hardening cycle may be slightly shorter.

Promat®-SR Impregnation provides reliable protection against

aggressive media. At the same time it strengthens the substrate and
protects against abrasion if necessary. The water vapour diffusion of
the impregnated surface is not impaired.
