A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

What is Med School Musical? For what possible reason would medical students, that group that is so
frequently and so audibly vocal about how it finds itself so overworked, and that despairs over its lack of
free time, want to dabble in the world of dramatic arts? Especially when its not even something they will be
examined on! The answer to that question is a very simple “why not?”. In the 4 years I have spent at
medical school, I have realized that medical students – in that group I include the allied medical students,
pharmacists, the whole bunch! – are very talented people. Talented not only in passing exams and retaining
vast amounts of life-saving knowledge, but in many other disciplines-singing, dancing, playing
instruments, performing, writing and being entertaining in general. I have realized also, and I say this with
much affection for what I suppose can be termed my “own kind”, that many medical students are
consummate show-offs. Med School Musical is a chance for those with a thirst to perform, to quench that
thirst-just because they can. Just because it’s FUN! I hope that you enjoy this production, and that it
reminds you that some of the most enriching things in life don’t have to happen, but can, and will if we
make them!

Amy is a 4 year medical student, and an amateur
dramatic enthusiast. Aside from her parents and
siblings, who always provided her with a willing
audience, she attributes this particular enthusiasm to
her involvement in the Springs Stagedoor Company’s
production of “Annie” in 1995, after which she
continued to be involved in drama both with Stagedoor
and at high school. Amy has no official directing
experience, and is thrilled to be involved in Med School
Musical.

Zoe is a 3 year medical student and also a dancer.
She is qualified as a junior tap and modern dance
teacher. Zoe says: “Med School Musical has been
an opportunity for me to allow my fellow medical
students to show how multi-talented we are. I wanted
the choreography to be fresh, interesting and
entertaining…I hope we have achieved this.”

Korea, but I would call P.E my hometown. If you ask
why I’m involved with MSM, I have to say because I
LoVE MusIC! Can’t live a day without music and I
wanted to share that passion with you! Enjoy the show.

The Band
‘The Band’ is composed of 3 fellow friends and musicians. Greg (19) has been
playing drums for 9 years and is the percussionist for the Johannesburg
Symphony Orchestra and the East Rand Youth Orchestra, as well as several other
bands. He is currently the drummer for Cats Don’t Like Meese. Greg’s dream is to
become a session drummer. One day he hopes to build a log cabin with all his
broken drum sticks. Ashley (14) has been playing bass guitar for a year, and is
also the bassist for Cats Don’t Like Meese. Someday, Ashley hopes to be a
professional musician, and a male dancer. Jonathan (24) is a Geography student
at Wits. He has been playing guitar and bass for 9 years, and has fluffy hair. One
day he hopes to open his own hair salon. The band’s influences are The Beach
Boys, Kenny Loggins, Eminem, and Cannibal Corpse.

Catherine is a 23 year-old 4th year
medical student. She first became
involved in performing when she
took part in an amateur production
of “Annie” in Springs in 1995. Since
then, she has regularly taken part in
school plays, amateur productions
and musical performances whenever
the opportunity arises. Catherine
says: “I hope to come back in my
next life as Julie Andrews!”
Rachel
I am a 2nd year medical student. I have
always had a passion for theatre and
music. Growing up, I loved singing and
acting and enjoyed participating in
theatrical productions in and outside of
school. Being a part of Medschool
Musical has been a fun and exciting
experience, but definitely hard work
and I am extremely happy to be able do
what I love to do while also studying to
become a doctor.

Daniela Benjamin is a third year
Bachelor of Health Sciences student
who has loved performing from a very
young age. She has been training as a
singer for the past twelve years and
recently started learning opera. Besides
acting whenever possible in musicals
she also enjoys dancing, art and
reading.
Thando
Jeffrey is 19 years old, and is studying
sport psychology. He has been involved
in drama from a young age, taking part
in plays throughout primary and high
school. Jeff loves acting because he
feels that people enjoy watching him
express himself. He is a very social
person and loves being surrounded by
good people who converse well.
Phil
Manzi hails from Virginia in the
Free-State, and is in 2nd year
Medicine. He is passionate about
music, soccer and Generations.
He describes himself as the
“typical good-guy, easy-going,
optimistic, a good listener and
easy to talk to. Some don’t
believe this but I do have
moments of shyness!”

was born in the UK so there is some
theatrical blood in her. This Ugandan
starlet is a 4th year medical student who
knows she was born to entertain, in her
own words “There’s nothing like the thrill,
practice and excitement of the build up to a
production and that opening night where
all eyes will be on that stage and me!”
