Human Rights Unit

Objective:
To create and record an argumentative speech on an violation of human rights as presented by

Tasks:
Students will research and identify one law of human rights.
Students will present an objective summary of the law.
Students will research and present two (2) instances of the violation of the law.
Students will present an argument for why it is a violation of human rights as well as an argument for why a
country may choose not to intervene.

Outcome:
An outline for the speech.
A speech recorded on the ipad.
Speech will be a minimum of 2 minutes but no longer than 4 minutes
Speech will cite textual evidence and present a clear claim, thesis, counterargument, relevant facts and
examples.

Day One:
1. Watch at least 3 videos
2. Annotate each video using the objective summary format (5ws)
3. Choose a human rights law
4. Prewrite an objective summary for the human rights law (FOR INTRODUCTION)

Day Two:
1. Research and identify two examples of a violation of your law
2. Prewrite an objective summary for each example making sure you provide an in-depth, comprehensive
summary for each violation example. Also, cite specific textual evidence for you to use in your speech. (FOR
BODY PARAGRAPHS)
3. Research and provide reasons identifying WHY a particular country or the UN may not intervene in the
violation (FOR COUNTERCLAIM)

Day Three:
1. Prepare a Call to Action - why there needs to be intervention; who should do the intervening; how will the
intervention help; what are the right conditions for an intervention (FOR CONCLUSION)
2. Synthesize all your written pieces and practice turning it into a speech using the outline provided.

Day Four:
1. RECORD your speech
You can record at school using the Ipad OR at home using your own device.
Speeches must be a minimum of two (2) minutes but no longer than four (4) minutes/
2. UPLOAD your speech to the googledrive
3. SHARE your speech with Ms. Hannon lmhannon@bcit.cc
