My degree will be in the technology field. Specifically, computer and network security.

In my career I will ensure computer and networks are properly secured. Creating procedures or

making sure that current standards and procedures are up to date and followed by staff.

Educating staff on the proper use of technology and ways to avoid common attacks.

Ransomware, phishing, and unauthorized access to business data to name a few. Creating

disaster recover plans for businesses to ensure business continuity. Any type of business is

vulnerable to attacks, measures need to be taken to prevent and notify of potential attacks.

Penetration testing needs to be done to scan for weakness in a company’s computer network and

remediate those vulnerabilities as needed. Depending on the type of business there are

government standards that must be met.

When I decided to start a career in this industry one of the main reasons for my decision

was the job outlook. The job outlook for this field is projected to grow 28% from 2016 to 2026

(Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor,4/13/2018). Not only is the outlook

projected to grow but the demand for job openings are higher than qualified security

professionals. It is estimated that by 2019 there will be 6 million job openings for information

security professionals, but only 4.5 million security professionals to fill those roles

for-businesses.html). The entry-level for most positions require a Bachelor’s degree and as of

May 2017 the median salary for Information security analysts is $95,510.00. The lowest 10

percent earned less than $55,560, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $153,090. (Bureau

of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor,4/13/2018). In this industry in addition to

obtaining a degree an employer might prefer for professionals to hold specific certifications.

Even though I still have much more schooling to go before I start my career in this

industry; I have started moving in the right direction. I plan on obtaining my Bachelor’s within a

year. In addition, I will obtain certifications that will help me stand out from other applicants.

Staying up to date with new technology and how it affects my industry seems like a daunting

task, but I look forward to the challenge.
