‘Engineering the Past,
to Meet the Needs of the Future’

The IABSE Copenhagen 2018 – Engineering the Past to Meet the Needs of the Future, Conference
Proceeding was held at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Copenhagen, June 25-27, 2018. This
Conference’s Scientific Committee was chaired by Barbara MacAulay; and the Organizing Committee was
chaired by Niels Christian Skov. The theme of the conference was “Engineering the Past, to meet the
needs of the Future”. The Conference aimed to provide a forum for structural engineers, owners,
operators, designers, researchers, contractors and suppliers to meet, discuss and exchange ideas and
experiences, within the topics of operation and maintenance of bridges and other civil engineering
structures. Main themes covered were: assessment and evaluation, field testing and proof loading,
inspection and maintenance strategies, life cycle cost and life, load models risk and reliability, repair and
retrofit, risk management, safety and serviceability, service life prediction, structural health monitoring.
This was accompanied by four keynote lectures. All papers presented and keynotes are available in the
Conference Report.
