Lesson Idea Template

Name: Hailey Urquhart

Grade Level: 2nd
Content Area: Science
Standards Addressed:
S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the life cycles of different living organisms.
Title of Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: Journey North
URL of Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: https://journeynorth.org and

Describe how you would use the Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in
your classroom:
I am going to use Journey North as a closing activity. I will give the students a lesson on the Life
Cycle of a butterfly, more specific the Monarch Butterfly. After the lesson, I will give the students
around 30 minutes to become the “expert” or scientist. They will get to learn all about the
Monarch Butterfly. They will collect data while being able to learn everything from their life cycle
to their migration patterns.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a
classroom?
A computer or some sort of tablet will be needed for each student so that can explore the online
learning project individually.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them
may not be addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level.):
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, and mentors outside their classroom
and often beyond their school: The site also has an online collaboration feature
with scientist and other student and teachers. Students can also connect with
students from all around the world.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (collecting original data
and or producing original products as a result of engaging in the project): The
data they receive can be reported to a central online database. This project allows
students from all over the world to connect and share data.
c. Higher-order thinking: This project supports high order thinking levels as well
higher levels of technology through the ability of going outside the classroom walls.
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about
their product: These sites allow students the opportunity to publish their work to
related audiences.

Remembering Understanding Applying Analyzing Evaluating Creating
What Level of Technology Implementation best describes this learning activity and Why?
Online collaboration sites are websites where students can engage with peers or mentors outside
of the classroom. This feature allows the LoTi level to increase to a level five due to the fact that
students are able to go outside the classroom.

How could you implement this proposed learning experience and still comply with your district’s
Internet Safety and Student Privacy policies?
Before using any of these sites it is important that teachers and inform administrators and
parents of what they are doing. It is also important that teachers become familiar with the
restrictions and terms of use of each site. It is important for teachers to practice safety so
students can learn what is appropriate and what is not.
