COMPANY PROFILE

St. Luke’s Medical Center (SLMC) is recognized as the leading and most respected

healthcare institution in the Philippines. Its two facilities in Quezon City and

Global City, Taguigare at par with the most advanced hospitals around the world. A

testament to SLMC’s world class quality medical service is its accreditation with, and

affiliation to, prestigious international organizations.

St. Luke’s-Quezon City has the sole distinction of being the first hospital in the country

accredited by the JCI, or Joint Commission International: the international arm of the Joint

Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)—the oldest and

most prestigious healthcare accreditation organization in the world—which the facility

received in 2003. It is also only the second hospital in Asia to be JCI-accredited. In 2016,

it was also the first in the country to be accredited by JCI as an Academic Medical Center

Hospital. St. Luke’s-Global City, on the other hand, earned its own JCI hospital

accreditation in 2012 after only two years of operation. Both hospitals are also accredited

by JCI for the Clinical Care Program Certification (CCPC) for the Primary Stroke Program.
Germany-based accrediting body Temos (Trust, Effective Medicine, and Optimized

Services) accredited both hospitals for Excellence in Medical Tourism and Quality in

International Patient Care. St. Luke’s-Quezon City and Global City have also been

recognized by the Diplomatic Council of Europe, in 2014 as two of only 20 “Best Hospitals

Worldwide,” and in 2016 as part of the prestigious group’s list of “Preferred

Partner Hospitals.”.

The passion to continuously improve, redefine, and evolve excellence in medical and

patient services has been the cornerstone of SLMC’s mission to deliver state-of-the-art

healthcare. This is also guided by key drivers: good clinical outcomes, patient safety,

education, training and research, a superior patient experience, and financial viability.

SLMC’s Quezon City and Global City hospitals possess a combined total of 1,146 well-

appointed rooms to ensure that all patients can be comfortably attended to, without fear

of a shortage in accommodations. Each is equipped with the best available equipment

depending on patient requirements, even providing bespoke services such as a selective

menu, a private butler, and advanced living amenities. SLMC believes that comfort and a

positive experience are vital in the quest for health and recovery, and its range of patient

rooms are designed with precisely these in mind.

It is because SLMC’s rooms provide a restorative space perfect for healing that they are

a sought-after choice for patients who need hospital care. A testament to this would be

the combined average number of in-patient admissions per year for both Quezon City

and Global City Hospitals, which is at 60,321 annually. Meanwhile, an average of 2.7

million yearly outpatient consultations indicates that SLMC is also the top-of-mind choice

even when patients are not required to be admitted.

With 12 institutes and various departments and centers serving its patients, SLMC

practices a multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach to the diagnosis and treatment

of specific medical conditions, while significant investments have been made to acquire

advanced medical technologies and equipment that provide the most accurate

diagnostics possible. In the hands of skilled and committed doctors, these advanced tools

help propel SLMC and its capabilities to the forefront of healthcare service in the

Philippines. A rundown of SLMC’s most prominent centers and cutting-edge technologies

verifies the institute’s position as a pioneer in the country’s health and wellness sphere:

SLMC’s Research and Biotechnology arm, based in Quezon City, is a prime mover and

catalyst in the advancement of medical science in the Philippines. Its remarkable progress

is marked by the wealth of scientific data generated from the development of several

molecular diagnostic tests which are then carried over to clinics and hospital wards,

thereby elevating the standard of healthcare in the country.

SLMC also offers Robotic Surgery, which is used to enhance the capabilities of surgeons

in operations with limited manoeuvrable space. This technology has been used in

urologic, gynaecologic, ENT-HNS, and general surgery cases, and is a highly specialized

surgical method that offers patient benefits such as minimal pain, less trauma, a shorter

hospital stay, and minimal to no scarring. To date, SLMC has already performed close to

1000 Robotic Surgery procedures, and this number is expected to rise considering that it

is a precise, painless, minimally-invasive technique. SLMC’s Robotic Surgery arm is also

recognized as the fastest growing one of its kind in South East Asia.

The Trans catheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure was first made available

in the Philippines at SLMC, allowing doctors to treat Aortic Stenosis (AS) without having
to resort to open-heart surgery. SLMC has already reached the 100 patient milestone for

TAVR patients, which places it comfortably in the top three in Southeast Asia for the most

number of TAVR procedures performed in the region.

In order to provide a safer, faster alternative to medication and the typical ablation

procedure for patients who suffer from Atrial Fibrillation (AF), SLMC acquired a

CryoConsole System—the first of its kind in the Philippines. Operated by trained Cardiac

Electrophysiologists, the Arctic Front Advance™ Cardiac Cryoballoon Ablation System

enables the minimally invasive practice of catheter ablation for patients. This procedure

reduces the recovery time required by normal catheter ablation, allowing patients to return

to regular activities in just two weeks.

SLMC also addresses the limited number of organ donations in the Philippines with the

establishment of its own Center for Organ Transplantation. The center performs both

living and deceased organ transplantation procedures with survival rates at par with

international outcomes—reported by the best centers around the world—and is promptly

capable of performing living-donor liver transplants. SLMC is also the first hospital in the

Philippines to be accredited by Phil Health for the “Z” Package, making organ

transplantation at SLMC more affordable and accessible to more Filipinos.

To be able to treat peritoneal carcinomatosis more effectively, SLMC has made Hyper

thermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy, or HIPEC, available to those afflicted with this rare

type of cancer. HIPEC is the gold standard when it comes to this type of treatment,

delivering the highly concentrated, heated chemotherapy to the affected area with more

accuracy.
SLMC’s Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and Infertility (CARMI) is the only

hospital-based In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) unit in the Philippines.

SLMC’s Global City Facility is home to the country’s first Center for Advanced

Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, under its Institute of Digestive and Liver diseases. The

diagnostic and therapeutic center addresses upper and lower gastrointestinal diseases

using state-of-the-art technology from Japan. Among the available procedures at the

center are Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) and Endoscopic Submucosal

Dissection (ESD), which do not require open surgery.

SLMC’s Brain Attack Team (BAT), the first of its kind to be globally-recognized and

accredited by the JCI, ensures the rapid and correct treatment of stroke. The BAT is

composed of neurology and neurosurgery stroke consultants, stroke fellows, stroke

nurses, emergency department doctors, radiology consultants, and endovascular

specialists.

ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction, or STEMI, demands rapid medical response. It is with

this in mind that SLMC created the STEMI Team, specifically to address the needs of

STEMI patients. Emergency physicians and nurses, coronary care unit nurses, Cath lab

staff, and committed interventional cardiologists who adhere to international standards of

treatment and response time comprise the team.

The institute’s Molecular Pathology arm, on the other hand, specializes in examining

diseases and conditions from the root. To properly classify conditions, Molecular

Pathology examines them through the molecular structure of the patient, providing a more
accurate interpretation for a more personalized treatment. This multidisciplinary approach

is commonly used in the diagnosis of cancer and other infectious diseases.

SLMC is also proud to possess some of the most advanced technology in the Philippines.

Among SLMC’s cutting edge tools are a Varian True Beam system which offers a range

of capabilities for cancer care, research, and treatment; Thulium Laser for safe and blood-

less enucleation; a Philips Azurion 7 paired with a Volcano CORE Mobile system, which

is an advanced image-guided therapy solution, now part of SLMC’s Cath lab; and a high-

resolution, personalized diagnostic procedure–the Gallium-68 (Ga-68) PET imaging.

Aside from its international accreditations and affiliations, its well-equipped

accommodations, and its advanced medical systems and technologies, SLMC also

inspires confidence in patients as an institute that employs doctors and associates who

are willing to learn and practice medical and healthcare services in a dynamic

environment. This is evident in the hospital’s 23 accredited residency programs and 56

accredited fellowship training programs—all of which are geared towards learning, and

sharing in the hospital, while staying unified under the umbrella of delivering the best in

patient care and service.

Future competent and compassionate medical professionals are educated and trained at

the St. Luke’s College of Medicine-William H. Quasha Memorial (SLCM-WHQM). The

medical school grants full scholarships to the best and brightest graduates of leading

Colleges and Universities. It also offers international clinical observer ships and the MS

Molecular Medicine Program.

In both Global City and Quezon City hospitals, Patient Experience Officers are always on

hand to assist patients and their families with medical and personal concerns.

Up on the horizon for SLMC is the upcoming completion of St. Luke’s Medical Center–

Davao City between 2020 and 2021.Located at Azuela Cove in Lanang, a prime

waterside location, the facility promises to continue the SLMC institute’s commitment to

top-notch medical services and patient care. Aside from a flagship St. Luke’s Medical

Center hospital, the 25-hectare, master-planned mixed use community will also feature

low- to mid-rise residential towers, commercial lots, office spaces, an events venue, and

a waterside cove with retail and lifestyle options.

St. Luke’s Medical Center will relentlessly pursue its vision and mission for many years

to come, and will continue to be the country’s premier medical institution and hospital of

choice for local residents and medical travellers.

History

St. Luke’s was established in 1903 by American Episcopalian missionaries as a charity

ward and dispensary hospital. St. Luke's started out as fully free outpatient clinic for the

poor in Calle Magdalena, Tondo. It also supports and conducts medical, dental and

surgical missions in rural areas. It was transformed into an independent, non-sectarian,

non-stock, non-profit corporation in the 1970s.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

SOCIAL SERVICE PROGRAM

Our Social Service Program enables less privileged Filipinos equitable access to world

class medical services of St. Luke’s, at little or no cost to them.

More often, the poor seek medical services from public hospitals and healthcare facilities,

which are often congested and have inadequate resources to provide them the best

medical care possible.

Our program will ensure that more indigent people can be reached, making positive

impact on their lives. Out of the 90,000 outpatients served by MSSD, about 3,000 are

admitted as in-patients, with cases ranging from cataracts to cancer.

Aside from this, St. Luke’s Medical Center Foundation, Inc. also supports community

health programs such as free clinics and health advocacy campaigns and training in

urban poor communities.

St. Luke’s, Project Liwanag Reach Out to Aeta Communities

The St. Luke’s Medical Center

Foundation and the Support and

Services Division of St. Luke’s –

Global City have teamed up with

Project Liwanag to reach out and

conduct community programs to

the indigenous people of Aeta in Capas Tarlac. A big group of volunteers from these

organizations trekked rocky and slippery paths, crossed mountain and braved several

rivers recently to reach the farthest Aeta community in Manalal in Capas Tarlac. They

distributed medicines, health kits, toiletries, food and clothing to the community people.

Project Liwanag has been involved in the electrification of remote tribal Aeta communities

in Tarlac and its partnership with St. Luke’s will bolster its mission to empower these

communities through communal and sustainable projects and transformational

grassroots partnership. Photo shows members of St. Luke’s Medical Center Foundation,

stringently screened for both their academic abilities and for their family’s incapacity to

pay for their medical education.

We support the continuing medical education program of St. Luke’s for physicians who

may want to pursue clinical fellowships, short-training courses, or post-graduate degrees

to further their medical know-how and skills. The additional training will equip our

healthcare professionals with the skills necessary to provide the best care possible for

Filipinos, including less fortunate countrymen.

New Scholars Sent to Medical School

The St. Luke’s Medical Center Foundation

has once again opened the doors for bright

young minds to fulfill their dreams of

becoming doctors. It has awarded full medical

scholarship to a fresh batch of students at the

St. Luke’s College of Medicine-William H. Quasha Memorial in Quezon City.

Four scholars were successfully screened and admitted as full scholars for the entire four

year course of medicine proper at the St. Luke’s College of Medicine beginning this

School Year 2017-2018. They are Claisyl B. Casiwan, a BS Nursing graduate of St. Louis

The scholarship provides the students 100% funding for the tuition, laboratory and

miscellaneous fees, books and monthly stipend for the full four years of medical

education. They will be honing their knowledge and skills in the medical school known to

be an innovative educational institution with a unique system of academic and scholarship

programs that produces graduates who have become exceptional clinicians,

academicians, and leaders and innovators of the medical profession.

RESEARCH PROGRAM

We provide funding for research projects specifically those that will have the greatest

impact on public health and the poor.

St. Luke’s Global City Nurses, FND Experts Push for Healthy Diet

The St. Luke’s – Global City’s

Nursing Care Group, in collaboration

with the Food and Nutrition

Department (FND) and the St. Luke’s

Medical Center Foundation, capped

this year’s Nutrition Month

Celebration by spearheading a

healthy diet education and training

for the residents of Western Bicutan in Taguig City last July 25, 2017.

Bearing the National Nutrition Council 43rd Annual Nutrition Month theme “Healthy Diet,

Gawing Habit-For Life!,” the nurses, dietitians, chefs and food and nutrition experts of St.

Luke’s emphasized the importance of a healthy diet as a means of staying healthy and

preventing diseases.

Resident-parents of the barangay attended sessions on healthy food identification,

selection, preparation and cooking while their children participated in separate lectures

on the basic food groups and activity-based assignments. The principles of “Go, Grow
and Glow” food were discussed as parents and their children learn proper meal

preparation with the right proportion of each food group. The parents engaged in hands-

on cooking while their children joined in canvass bag painting at the end of the day’s

program.

The nutrition month celebration was the latest in the string of component activities that

the nurses of the hospital have been conducting in the barangay for its long range

comprehensive and sustainable community outreach program. Earlier, the nurses also

organized training on first-aid, emergencies and disasters, medicinal plants gardening,

discussions on various health issues, among others. The goal of the program is to

empower the community to take charge of their own individual and community health and

development through the guidance and support of competent healthcare professionals.
