Once upon a time, a very long time
ago, on a wonderful small island, there was
a young man called Captain Tamoul.
Around this island, the sea was turquoise
blue and it was inhabited by multicoloured
fish. On the dry land lived many incredible
animals: giant tortoises, invisible lizards,
and white birds, speeding as angels do…
Captain Tamoul was a generous and
brave man. He spent all his time protecting
the wildlife and the flora of the island. He
had no house; he lived on an old boat called
La Grandière.

Odată ca niciodată, acum mult timp,
pe o mică insulă minunată, trăia un tânăr
numit Căpitanul Tamoul. În jurul acestei
insule, marea era de albastru turcoise şi în
ea trăiau mulţi peşti multicolori. Pe insulă
vieţuiau multe animale incredibile: broaşte
ţestoase uriaşe, şopârle invizibile, păsări
albe ca nişte îngeri…
Căpitanul Tamoul era un om curajos
şi generos. El îşi petrecea tot timpul având
grijă de animalele şi plantele de pe insulă.
El nu avea casă; locuia pe o barcă veche
numită La Grandière.

He had heard that there were many
beautiful things on earth and he wanted to
see them.
One day Captain Tamoul thought
that it would be a new and exciting experi-
ence to go round the world. Being a brave
man, he decided to sail in his old beloved
boat.
After a few adventures due to his old
boat and the big waves he wasn’t accus-
tomed to, the captain finally sighted land.
He had arrived in a country whose
language he didn’t speak, but whose warm
and kind people made him feel at home. It
was a country with blue sea, but this was
actually called the Black Sea. It was the
country of the Dracula legends, with majes-
tic mountains and emerald fields called –
Romania.
Soon, the captain decided to embark
on another adventure, but not before he took
a souvenir from Romania – the puppy of a
shepherd’s dog, which was white and curly
like a snowball. And soon afterwards they
became very good friends.
An old boat, a captain, a puppy…
sailing on the sea…Where would they stop
next? What would their next destination be?
El auzise că erau multe lucruri
frumoase pe pământ şi vroia să le vadă.
Într-o zi căpitanul Tamoul s-a gândit
că ar fi o experienţă nouă şi interesantă să
călătorească în jurul lumii. Fiind un om
curajos el s-a hotărât să plece cu vechea lui
barcă îndrăgită.
După câteva aventuri datorate vechii
bărci şi valurilor mari cu care nu era obişnuit
căpitanul a zărit pământ. Ajunsese într-o
ţară a cărei limbă nu o vorbea, dar ai cărei
oameni calzi şi buni îl făceau să se simtă ca
acasă. Era o ţară cu o mare albastră, dar
care era de fapt numită Marea Neagră. Era
ţara legendelor lui Dracula, cu munţi
maiestuoşi si câmpii de smarald numită
România.
Curând căpitanul a decis să se îmbarce
într-o nouă aventură, dar nu înainte de a lua
un suvenir din România – căţeluşul unui câine
ciobănesc, care era alb şi cârlionţat ca un
bulgăre de zăpadă. Şi foarte curând după
aceea cei doi au devenit prieteni foarte
buni.
O barcă veche, un căpitan curajos, un
căţeluş … navigând pe mare … unde se vor
opri oare? Care va fi următoarea lor
destinaţie?

 Captain Tamoul turned in the direction of
the other side of the Black Sea, as,
impressed by the unique greenness of the
Black Sea Region, he steered his way
towards the Bosphorus. While he was
passing through the Bosphorus, he was
fairly charmed by the array of colours which
adorned the darkness of the night. However,
the passion for adventure in him kept
making him stop to watch the splendid view.
On the strong wind, he passed the
Dardanelles and met with the limpid water

 As soon as he sailed into the Mediterranean Sea he realized that
the water was warmer and its colours were blue-ish and green-ish shades.
Suddenly, he saw a flock of beautiful blue and grey dolphins, which
jumped around the boat. Tamoul realized that one of them was carrying
something in his mouth. Being afraid it was a hook, he decided to follow
them. The Dolphins took him to a place in the north of Africa, Melilla.
“Oh! It looks like a pirate town!” Tamoul said. It was a medieval city with a fort, an inlet, called the
Bay of Galapagos, and a beautiful lighthouse. The beaches had white sand, like desert dunes, and chil-
dren bathed without any danger since the sea was not very deep.
When he was preparing to dock, something strange happened. A long and beautiful river of purple
jellyfishes led him to another place. He went across the sea to the mainland of Spain, to Motril.
Tamoul had heard about the famous red sunsets of the Alhambra, its sources, its yards and the Arabic
neighborhood of Albahicin, so he went to Granada.
There, he was fascinated by a beautiful woman from Granada with big black eyes and a perfect smile.
There he spent the best time of his life, and when he had to set out again, the Gypsy who had stolen
his heart, went away with him.
Tamoul set course for the Atlantic ocean, seeking new experiences, but with the memories of his
Island, Reunion

De îndată ce a intrat în Marea Mediterană el şi-a dat seama că apa era mai caldă
şi avea nuanţe de albastru deschis şi verde. Deodată a văzut un grup de frumoşi delfini
albaştri şi gri, care săreau în jurul bărcii.
Tamoul a realizat că unul dintre ei purta ceva în
gură. Temându-se să nu fie un cârlig, el s-a
decis să-i urmărească. Delfinii l-au condus într-
un loc din nordul Africii numit Melilla.
„Oh! Arată ca un oraş de piraţi! a
exclamat Tamoul. Era un oraş medieval cu o
fortăreţă, un golfuleţ numit golful Galapagos şi
un far foarte frumos. Plajele aveau nisipul alb,
ca al dunelor din deşert şi copiii făceau baie
fără să fie nici un pericol, deoarece apele nu
erau foarte adânci.
Pe când se pregătea să acosteze s-a
întâmplat un lucru foarte ciudat. Un râu lung şi
frumos de meduze l-a condus către un alt loc. A
traversat marea către continent, spre Spania,
la Motril.
Tamoul auzise de faimoasele apusuri de
soare roşii de la Alhambra, de cauzele acestora, de grădinile şi împrejurimile arăbeşti
ale Albahicinului, aşa că a mers spre Granada.
Acolo a fost fascinat de o frumoasă femeie cu ochi mari şi negri şi zâmbetul
perfect. Acolo a petrecut una din cele mai frumoase perioade ale vieţii sale şi când a
trebuit să plece din nou ţiganca care îi furase inima a plecat cu el.
Tamoul s-a îndreptat către Oceanul Atlantic căutând noi aventuri, dar aducându-
şi aminte şi de frumoasa lui insulă, Reunion. 79
 After several
days sailing in the
Mediterranean, they
finally entered the
Atlantic Ocean where
the water became
colder and the waves turned huge and dangerous.
Suddenly a strange and mystical fog appeared
and “la Grandiére” ran aground on a big rock.
Luckily they found an old fisherman who was
reading a book. The old man went immediately
to help them, and told them that they were in
cape Sagres where the Portuguese, in 15th and
16th century, sailed from, towards everywhere
around the world, discovering new continents,
new lands and new maritime routes. He then
showed them the book he was reading
“Lusíadas” written by Luís de Camões where the
author praised all the Portuguese navigators and
all the adventures they had during those days.
The old fisherman spent one long day explaining
all the Portuguese discoveries in those centuries.
Captain Tamoul became so thrilled with all those
amazing stories that he invited the old fisherman
to join them in their adventures,- obviously the
old man accepted.
Then, they sailed around the Portuguese coast
until they’d entered on to the Tagus river where
they could see Belém Tower and the Geronimos
monastery. Then they continued their trip,
heading along the Portuguese north coast, until
they saw and entered the Douro’s river. Here
they could see the typical Douro’s boat
“Rabelos” and the Clérigos tower and a huge,
majestic church “Sé”. After having a typical
traditional meal of tripes they left Douro’s river
and once again entered the Atlantic Ocean where
they continued to sail…

După câteva zile de navigat pe
Mediterană au ajuns în final în Oceanul
Atlantic unde apele erau mai reci şi valurile
se făcuseră imense şi periculoase. Deodată o
ceaţă deasă şi stranie i-a înconjurat şi vasul
Grandiére s-a lovit de o stâncă.
Din fericire pasagerii au zărit un
pescar citind o carte, căruia i-au cerut
ajutorul. După ce i-a adus pe mal, bătrânul le
-a povestit că se aflau în Capul Sagres, un
loc din care în secolele XV şi XVI,
navigatorii portughezi au plecat spre toate
zonele lumii, descoperind noi continente,
cucerind noi pământuri şi trasând noi rute
maritime. Le-a arătat apoi cartea pe care o
citea, volumul“Lusíadas”, în care autorul, Luís
de Camões, îi slăvea pe navigatorii de
demult, povestind aventurile lor. Căpitanul
Tamoul a fost atât de încântat de aceste
poveşti ale unor fapte temerare, încât l-a
invitat pe bătrân să li se alăture în aventura
lor, iar acesta a acceptat cu bucurie.
Au navigat apoi de-a lungul coastei
Portugaliei, până ce au intrat pe Râul Tagus
şi au putut observa de aproape Belém Tower
şi Mănăstirea Geronimos. Au continuat apoi
călătoria până în partea nordică a
Portugaliei, unde au ajuns la Râul Douro. Aici
s-au bucurat de privelişti noi- Turnul
Clérigos, Mănăstirea “Sé”, şi o barcă
specifică zonei Douro, numită Rabelos. După
ce au gustat bucate tradiţionale, din burtă
de vită, au părăsit Râul Douro şi au intrat
apoi în Atlantic, pe care au continuat să
navige către alte meleaguri.
 The Atlantic Ocean was stormy and
choppy, but captain Tamoul was fearless and
sailed on. He journeyed around the coasts of
Spain and France, crossed the English Channel
and eventually headed to England. In the
distance he saw the gleaming, shining white
cliffs of Dover. He was very curious so he sailed
up close and docked his trusty ship so he could
get a closer look. Whilst walking around the
famous cliffs he took a small piece of the dusty,
smooth chalk as a souvenir.
Later on Tamoul decided to see the sights of
London, so he set off in search of the Thames
Estuary. The river was wide and muddy and
there were squawking seabirds everywhere.
He realised he hadn’t had a bite to eat for ages
so after mooring his boat he decided to search for
something satisfying to eat. Suddenly a rich
delicious smell filled his nostrils and made him
even hungrier. He followed the aroma and was
soon wolfing down crispy battered cod and fluffy
chips covered in salt and vinegar. It was
amazing!
Tamoul was then ready to explore some of
London’s famous landmarks. As he sailed along
the Thames, historic buildings such as Big Ben,
the Tower of London and the Houses of
Parliament loomed over him. He also waved to
people sitting in the capsules of the London Eye.
He had a busy and interesting day.
After a tasty full english breakfast the next
morning, Tamoul heard, once again, the call of
the ocean. He decided he had stayed too long and
it was time to set sail once more.
Oceanul Atlantic era învolburat şi
furtuna era tăioasă, dar căpitanul Tamoul
era neînfricat şi a continuat să navige fără
oprire. Aşa au trecut pe lângă coastele
Spaniei şi Franţei, au străbătut Canalul
Englez şi s-au îndreptat către Anglia. În
depărtare a zărit stâncile strălucitoare ale
Portului Dover. Curios a pilotat nava atent
pentru a se apropia să vadă mai bine. După o
plimbare pe plajă, în jurul faimoaselor stânci
s-a întors pe vapor cu un souvenir, o
bucăţică de rocă calcaroasă şi netedă,
asemănătoare cretei.
Apoi căpitanul s-a gândit să viziteze
şi Londra şi a pornit în căutarea Estuarului
Tamisei. Râul era lat, mâlos, iar peste tot se
auzeau ţipetele pescăruşilor. Curând a
realizat cât de flămând era, căci nu mai
mâncase de mult. A ancorat şi a plecat în
căutarea unui loc satisfăcător pentru a-şi
potoli foamea. Deodată, un miros delicios i-a
umplut nările şi mergând după aroma
apetisantă s-a trezit în faţa unui platou cu
cod şi cartofi crocanţi în sos sărat - acrişor.
Minunat! Acum era gata să exploreze
priveliştile şi monumentele simbolice ale
Londrei- Clădirea Parlamentului cu
impozantul Big Ben, Turnul Londrei şi chiar
oamenii ce stăteau în capsulele din Ochiul
Londrei. A avut o zi plină şi interesantă.
A doua zi, după un săţios mic dejun
englezesc, Tamoul a auzit din nou chemarea
oceanului. S-a decis imediat să se lase în
voia valurilor şi a pornit iar la drum. Dar
încotro? Ce lucruri extraordinare îl mai
aşteptau? 81

Tamoul travelled on his ship to the
calm North Sea, then through Danish straits,
Skagerrak and Kattegat, to the Baltic Sea and
then finally to the Aland islands. He landed at
the harbour of city called Marienhamn. After
he had chatted for a while with numerous fish-
ermen in the harbour, he realized that he was in
Finland, the northernmost country in the Euro-
pean Union. In Aland he went fishing, wanting
to get a big catch, and at last he got it! It was a
huge Atlantic salmon. After leaving Aland, Ta-
moul decided to head to Turku, which is proba-
bly the oldest city in Finland. The trip went
fine, even though the route was not easy be-
cause of the numerous isles and underwater
stones. When he was in Turku he saw, among
other things, a medieval Turku cathedral. When
he visited there he heard that ancient Finns had
buried people there under the cathedral´s floor
for centuries. First he got a little upset but
calmed down again when he heard that this
manner of burying people wasn’t used anymore
in Finland. From Turku cathedral Tamoul saw
another interesting building - the Turku´s me-
dieval castle. He was very interested in the cas-
tle and therefore he decided to go to look at it
more closely. In the castle there were many
very dark corridors lit with just a few candles.
He continued along the corridors to a king´s
hall and admired how thick the vaults were.
Then he went back to his ship and there he de-
cided to begin his journey back to his little
home island, Reunion, France. He was really
happy with his heart full of memories and great
adventures. We´ll see when his next adventure
begins!
Tamoul a călătorit cu nava sa pe liniştita
Mare a Nordului, apoi prin Strâmtorile Daneze
Skagerrak şi Kattegat, către Marea Baltică şi în
final către insulele Aland. A ancorat într-un port
din oraşul numit Marienhamn.
După câteva discuţii cu pescarii din port, a
înţeles că se afla în Finlanda, cea mai nordică ţară
europeană. În Aland a mers la pescuit. Îşi dorea o
pradă bună şi din fericire a prins un uriaş somon
de Atlantic. După ce a plecat din Aland, s-a
hotărât să viziteze Turku, care părea să fie cel
mai vechi oraş al Finlandei. Călătoria a fost bună,
deşi drumul îi era îngreunat de numeroase insule şi
roci subacvatice. În Turku a vizitat catedrala
medievală şi a aflat că strămoşii finlandezi
îngropaseră secole de-a rândul oamenii sub
podeaua catedralei. La început s-a speriat, după
care a aflat că obiceiul îngropării în catedrală nu
mai era în vigoare de mult timp. Din catedrală
Tamoul a văzut un alt obiectiv interesant- un
castel medieval, pe care imediat a dorit să-l vadă
de aproape. În castel era un păienjeniş de
coridoare întunecoase, luminate doar de câteva
lumânări. A mers de-a lungul coridoarelor către
sala tronului şi apoi a admirat grosimea pereţilor
şi siguranţa ce o degajau.
În final s-a întors la vasul său şi şi-a început
lungul drum spre casă, către Insula Reunion din
Franţa. Era extrem de fericit, cu mintea plină de
amintiri şi inima tresăltând de fiorul aventurilor
trăite. Cine putea şti când urma să înceapă
următoarea lui aventură?
