2.3. - LIFTING and/or TRANSPORTING MAIN DECK HATCHCOVERS

- Δ Before starting to lift a hatchcover always be sure that the cleats are unlocked,
the wedges are in backward position and the timbersupports are removed!

- Δ When open a closed cargo bay always start to remove the “closing” hatchcovers
before lifting an “underlayer” hatchcover!

2.3.1 - Lifting and/or transporting hatchcovers with the gantry crane

Lift the lifting frame of the crane at least a meter above the height of the hatchcover
and drive to approx 0,5 meter for the middle of the hatchcover. Lower the frame till the rolls are
laying on the top plate. Drive slowly forwards till the four liftinghooks on the frame are fitted in
the supports on side of the hatchcover. Watch the pointers of the crane to be in line with pointer
on hatchcovers. If now lifting the frame, the hatchcover is connected to the crane and can be
lifted and transport to the places were they can be piled up. It is possible to create a pile of
max. 6 hatchcovers on several places on the deck. It is also possible to drive with a hatchcover
over ventilation caps on midship.

13
2.3.2 - Lifting and/or transporting hatchcovers with onshore crane
For loading and unloading the hatchcovers by means of an onshore crane with container
spreader, the hatchcovers are provided with container foundation.
When adapter HT-3 from conver is used you can lift with a 20” spreader.
Otherwise use slings to lift hatchcover.Hoisting points are axles directly after hoistingpoints for
gantrycrane. Length of sling to be the same as breadth of hatchcover to ensure a safe hoisting
angle.

2.4.- LIFTING and/or TRANSPORTING TWEENDECKS/GRAINBULKHEADS

To make gantry-crane ready for lifting tweendecks / grainbulkheads.

2.4.1 - To store and unlock lifting-frame

Bring lifting-frame in highest position till it is pushed to the buffers. Link the lifting-frame to the
main-frame with the 2 locking-devices which can be reached by opening the cover in the top
step. Release the hoisting cable a little and unlock the lifting-frame by pulling the handle of the
connection-shafts and push to the left untill the shaft is locked (by springs).

2.4.2. - To handle the tweendeck support with workbin.

Before the tweendecks can be placed in the cargo hold, the tweendeck support in the holdside
must be turn-over by means of the gantrycrane and special tool. Therefore storecanes will be
used. Steelwire of storecranes must be pulled back over sheaves which are mounted in crane.
Now drive slowly to the working cabin store and lift the cabins to the highest position and drive
to the tweendeck support which has to be handled. Lower the cabin and connect the nylon rope
on the handling tool on the support of the tweendeck support. By lower or lifting the cabin with
the winches you can turn-over or in the support. See also chapter 2.4.5.

Please take in notice:Do never loosen safety pin of safety hook aside the support before
to be sure support is properly attached to safetycabin with delivered rope and set
tensioned. Please roll rope with a minimum of 5 turns over the pipe of the the work bin.

2.4.3 - To transport tweendecks

Lower the unlocked hoisting-cable and fasten the spreader-cables with the tweendeck-lifting
tool to the hoisting-cable. Connect the liftinghooks to the lifting points in the tweendecks

15
2.4.4 - Tweendeck store position
When the tweendeckcovers are not in use they can be stored in the aft cargohold against
aftbulkhead vertical or horizontal (See sector drawings tweendeck 010). Also in front of midship
can be stored 2 grainbulkheads.

16
2.4.5. - How to use the workbin for locking side-pins in the grainbulkhead
There for place steelwires from storecanes on special sheaves found on topframe of crane.
Before doing this rotate storecranes 90 degrees to point them towards foreship or aftship
depending which side tobe operated of the grainbulkheads.Attach workbins to hooks of
storecranes. Lift the cabins to the highest position and drive to the grainbulkhead which has to
be handled. Now the grainbulkhead can be hoisted (see chapter .2.4.6.) or turned-over to
vertical position as grainbulkhead (see chapter 2.4.7.) For lifting front grainbulkheads place
workbin in storecrane hoisting point(found at underside storecrane beam). This can be done to
lift electrotackles with storecranes on top of gantrycrane and then hook to hoisting point.(See
picture below for front tweendecks)
Hang the electro chain tackles in the hooks on port- and starboard storecrane and connect the
power supply plugs in the covers in the controle unit.

17
2.4.6. - Hoisting grainbulkheads.
The grainbulkhead part can be hoisted with the main hoisting cable.First store the lifting frame
and unlock the hoisting cable from the lifting frame (see 2.4.1). Drive to the grainbulkhead that
has tobe lifted or turned over from tweendeckcover to grainbulkhead vertical position (see
2.4.7.) Now place the lifting tools on top of the grainbulkhead.Tension winch cable and pull out
side pins. The grainbulkhead part now can be lifted and moved with the gantry-crane.

18
- Δ When the grainbulkheads are placed to its position the upper part must be moved
to a position where it is possible to bring the lower part to its grainbulkhead position.
When the grainbulkhead is in its right position the part must be fixed to the hold side with four
locking side-pins. To drive-out these locking side-pins an hydraulic jack is needed which can
be operated with the hydraulic handpump fixed on the workingcabin.

2.4.7 - To over-turn tweendeckcovers in vertical position (to store or to use it as

grainbulkhead)
Lower the tweendeckcovers slowly on the tank-top and unlock the liftinghooks from the lifting
points.Lower the hoisting-cable end on the tweendeck and remove the spreader-cables and
the lifting tool. Take the lifting-tool (see chapter 2.4.1) and fasten it to main hoisting cable. This
lifting tool can be connected to the lifting-point on top of the tweendeck.(Be sure of good
secured connections !!) Lift the tweendeck and drive slowly back- or forward to turn the
tweendeck over the bottomside to vertical position. The tweendeck can now be lifted and
transported to the store-position or to be used as grainbulkhead. If the grainbulkhead is on the
right position secure the grainbulkhead with locking pins which are operated by a hydraulic
jack (placed in the hole in the grainbulkhead) and manual hydraulic pump.

2.4.8. - Grainbulkhead positions

For the several grainbulkhead position see ‘Grainbulk stability book”.

2.4.9 - To over-turn grainbulkhead in horizontal position.(to use it as tweendeck

Same procedure but backward as discribed above.

19
3. - MAINTENANCE OF THE CRANE
3.1. - Crane stop / Store position:

3.1.1 Store position

If the crane is stopped for longer periods of time or during sea-going, the crane must be placed
on aftship and can also be placed at midship. To lash the crane down use the steelwires and
stretchers , seafasteners as shown in figure on next page. A gangway ladder can be stored in
lifting frame of gantrycrane. Storecranes must be attached with steel wire/chain tensioner to the
crane which is equipped with lashing eyes.

3.1.2 How to release the bearings of the driving-units

If the crane is stopped for a longer periods of time, the wheels of the driving-units must be
lifted from the rail to avoid damage of the bearings when lashed down. This can be done by
placing the small hydraulic cilinder on the specific place under the crane-profile and lift the
frame, about 10 mm, by using a hydraulic jack. Place the stamp on front and aftside in the
driving-unit and fixed them with the shaft. Release the cilinder of the hydraulic jack and remove
them, the wheels of the crane are now about 5 mm free from the rail.

20
3.1.3 How to place the sea-fastener clamps
When crane is stored for sea-going, lift the lifting frame into its highest position (against the
buffers) and “lock” the lifting frame to the main frame with the 4 locking devices. Place the
removeable sea-fastening clamps in the pipes on portside. Then lash down the crane to the
ship/coaming by tightend the M30 bolt on the shafts.

3.1.4 How to place the store cables

To prefend the crane for heavy horizontal movement (for example during heavy weather
conditions) the crane must be stored diagonal with two steel wires by connecting the cable to
the store eyes on the aft-side of the crane and to the store eye plate on center ship on the deck
. The cable can be shortened by chain-part and tightened with a ratchet stretcher.
See dwg 705 in section drawings gantrycrane.
