may be seen from his writings and from the letters to and
from his friends on the Continent. That he was intimately
acquainted with at least two of the foremost French thinkers
of the time is seen from his Examination of Malebranche,
written in 1693, though not published till 1706 in his Posthu
mous Works and his translations of three of Nicole's Essais,
(executed between 1672 and 1680) published in 1828. His
first publications were in French, viz. the ' Méthode nouvelle
de dresser des Recueils ' and an abstract of the Essay concern
ing Human Understanding, the c Essai Philosophique concer
nant l'Entendement où l'on montre quelle est l'étendue de nos
connaissances certaines et la manière dont nous y parvenons,'
both of which appeared in a French periodical published in
Holland, Leclerc's Bibliothèque Universelle et Historique. 1
The entries in two notebooks kept before ever he visited
the Continent show that Locke had early become interested in
the fashionable philosophy of France. Thus the notebook
1664-1666 2 contains quotations from Gassendi's Life of Pei
reske, Vincent le Blanc's Travel books, and a note at the back
Prataus. Cartesii subtilitatibus addictus. '
The other notebook, for 1667, 3 is full of excerpts from
books of all kinds, both English and foreign, classical and
modern. Among them are conspicuous Boyle, Montaigne,
Voiture, Gassendi—his Physics and Life of Peireske—Pascal,
Cardinals Perron and D'Ossat and Descartes.
With Nicolas Thoynard, whom he met during his brief
stay in France in the autumn of 1672, Locke maintained a
steady correspondence, a correspondence which on Thoynard's
side, is full of the scientific and philosophic news of Paris.
Henri Justel was another of his correspondents with whom he
discussed philosophic problems. There are numerous refer
ences to the Journal des Sçavants and some to the Bibliothèque
Choisie,* where were reviewed and discussed the latest books
of the learned, showing that Locke was a regular reader, and
that he took pàins, through them, to keep in touch with French
thought.

In this same Journal for 1677, Locke listed Descartes'
works, (f. 201) \ a note on Descartes' sources (f. 229) ;
J. B. Du Hamel's De Corporum ajjectionibus turn manifzstis
turn occultis, and Du Hamel's opinion of Cordemoy as a c vir
doctissimus ' (f. 359) ; and Le Fèvre's Méthode pour commen
cer les humanités, (f. 315).
More interesting and important, however, for the infor
mation it gives of Locke's reading and of the authors in whom
he was interested during his stay in France is the notebook
concerning books, with entries from 30.6.1677 to 30.6.1678. 2
Here, apart from numerous books of travel, of which Locke
seems always to have been very fond, we find references to
many French philosophical works, and further, to contem
porary commentaries and criticisms of them.
Thus Pascal's Lettres Provinciales are listed at least four
times in the notebook, and the Pensées as frequently. On
ff. 150, 151, there is a reference to—

this ideal realm and have knowledge of the things to which the
ideas are said to correspond ? In IV.iv. of the Essay Locke
tries to show that both kinds of ideas, simple and complex,
are real; the simple in that they proceed from real things,
and are not ' fictions of our fancies, ' and the complex in that
they may or may not be their own archetypes. He argues
thus :— If complex ideas are their own archetypes, then the
essence we know is the real, and not the nominal essence, and
they need correspond to nothing outside them. Nevertheless,
if there are found in the real objective world, say, triangular
and circular objects, then the knowledge we have of triangles
and circles in geometry will hold also of these real objects.
If ideas are not their own archetypes, if they are, that is,
ideas of substances, they are real only if they correspond
exactly to the actual facts in the external world.
But that the knowledge we get from ideas is real in this
sense, Locke cannot prove, and in the Examination of Male
branche, where he is criticising the representative theory of
Malebranche, he recognises this. In fact, the theory of know
ledge put forward in the later chapters of Book IV is not
representationalist—we have the knowledge of our own exis
tence by intuition, of the existence of God by demonstration,
and of other things by sensation.
Against the theory of innate ideas Locke opposes his own
empirical theory that the mind at birth is a ' tabula rasa '
and that it gains ideas by the two-fold process of Sensation
and Reflection. It is more than likely that the men of whom
he makes mention in the opening paragraph of the Essay are
the followers of Descartes, and certainly his contemporaries
felt that Locke's most active antagonists were the Cartesians.
P. Guenellon for instance, 1 makes mention of a certain
M. Quina, one who read nothing but mathematics and Carte
sianism, who had something to say against the Essay, which
however, says Guenellon, 5 ne vous surprendra guere puisque
sans doubte vous vous este bien attendu a ces remarques Carte
siennes. '
Again, Limborch in his letter of 18.2.1701 remarks that it
is the Cartesians who are displeased at Locke's book.
