1. “Magical! Magnificent! Mind-blowing!

” These were just some of the adjectives spilling out of

the mouth of Jayne Hill, TV critic for TV and Satellite Week – but it’s the same with TV critics
everywhere – on the TV, and on the radio, and on the web, and, yes, even in the newspapers!
None of them have a bad thing to say about it.
As this isn’t my first time in front of you, I’m sure you’re all well aware of what I’m talking about
– that’s right – Chuck. However, I’m certain that the question is there, lingering on your mind,
“What makes this kooky kid think that he’ll last do any better this time?”. Well, after
yesterday’s disappointment, I evaluated myself and saw where I would need to improve. And
so, this time, I’ve decided to get a little help from the nerd himself – here’s Chuck to tell you
what the premise of the show is.

4. As you’ll be seeing them a lot in the show, it seems obvious that the characters would be a
large reason for watching Chuck. First off, the characters are believable – they don’t do things
that they’d not normally be able to do – after all, they’re not Superman and they definitely
don’t have super-powers! Each of the characters are unique, and they are not just the stock
characters you’d find in a fairytale – these all have interesting backgrounds with many twists
and turns, ups and downs, and even inside outs (ok, maybe not that last one) along the way.
Now, I’m not very good with Science, but the cast must have been real nerds, as it screams
out at you while watching the show that they passed the chemistry exam with full marks and
flying colours.

Over the two seasons of the show so far, there have been many relationships in the show,
some bigger than others. Some that have been only hinted at. And some that we can always
dream about. No matter which of those you consider, the characters have just the right
amount of depth to give us a good grasp of the character, but for them to still have their
mysteries, questions and skeletons. For instance, a character that has been mentioned a fair
few times, but never truly explained or expanded – or seen, as a matter of fact, is Chuck and
Ellie’s mother, who left the family at a very young age, and yet she has such an impact on
both Chuck and Ellie.

5. A typical Chuck confrontation, for sure.

6. Everybody loves a geek, right? – and that’s just what Chuck is. He plays video-games (Xbox
360 fanboy – Gears of War and Call of Duty), works in the “Nerd Herd” division of an

electronics shop, created his own version of Zork, and hasn’t had a girlfriend since college –
See? Typical geek.
Chuck hasn’t had the confidence in life that he perhaps should, as when he was in college,
Stanford, his best buddy there, Bryce (who later sent him the Intersect, of course), accused
Chuck of cheating in an exam, getting him thrown out of Stanford, and stole Chuck’s (only)
girlfriend, Jill.
There is no doubt in my mind - Chuck is going to be over 148 times more loyal, over 750
times more compassionate, and over 9000 times more pacifistic (trust me, I’ve researched
this) than anyone you’ll ever meet – be it in real life or in fiction! He will never desert his
friends or family, or even someone he’s met just five minutes ago, when in need, even if it
involves putting himself at a great risk. We can all identify with Chuck in some way or other,
he’s just an ordinary guy, who wants an ordinary life, but has, rather reluctantly, been thrown
into the unordinary life of a spy.

The stunning, sexy, Sarah is just as sweet as she looks, but beware boys – she can be
ruthless too, if need-be.
Although she’s not as open as Chuck is, Sarah has a great intuitiveness, which has helped
her when dealing with Chuck and his friends and family. She cares deeply for Chuck, much,
much, much more than the mission requires, and she’s always trying to help Chuck reach his
full potential, as she often praises him and even tells him that he makes a good spy. As a
result of this intimate relation with Chuck, she does her best to avoid lying to or holding back
information from Chuck, or using him, his abilities, or his relationships without his knowledge
and consent.
Her relationship with Chuck has slowly helped Sarah become a part of a family again, as she
spent her childhood pulling scams with her fraudulent father, never having the chance to
make friends or the chance to live in a stable home, as the scams would keep them moving
from city to city. And, as a spy, she was always alone (well, being a spy - understandable),
although she did have a relationship with Bryce while they were partners.

9. You know, speaking as a nerd myself, I remember a time when I was in love with the popular
girl in school, but just like how that story usually goes, there was always something holding us
back from being together (- ok, granted - in my case, it was because she didn’t feel the same
way).
Now, you’re probably wondering what that has to do with anything, and so I’ll tell you.
I mention that because there is a similar concept in Chuck, except that the popular girl in
Chuck, Sarah of course, does actually love the nerd, Chuck. The problem is actually the fact
that, due to Chuck being in the spy world (as well as Sarah), due to the Intersect being stuck
in his head, Sarah and Chuck can’t be together.

11. Now, I know most of us – no, let’s face facts, all of us here, will believe that Richard, our
fellow classmate here, is a patriot. Now, how would you feel if I said that Richard was a traitor
compared to John Casey? Never, you say? - Well, perhaps it’s time to face facts again...
First of all, anyone who has seen Firefly or Serenity will be compelled from the beginning to
watch Chuck, as Casey is played by Adam Baldwin, who played the fan-favourite Jayne
Cobb.
Casey has a very sarcastic and ironic sense of humour. It seems he can’t resist pulling a one-
liner out of his sleeve every time he beats up a bad guy or saves the day. Contrary to the
usual idea that everyone has a calm centre somewhere inside them, Chuck describes Casey
as having an “angry centre” – and he’s right.
Would I think of Casey as more of an action-orientated Jack Bauer, from 24, or a charming
spy-orientated James Bond, from James Bond? Well, it’s definitely more Bauer, but without
the wasting of time by messing around with torture – Casey’ll just shoot you. He’s got lives to
save.

12. It would appear to us at first that Casey doesn’t truly care for anything in life, as his past major
relationships that we’ve learnt about, his training under his Sensei, Ty Bennett, who later
became rogue and betrayed the country and Casey, and his relationships with Ilsa, a French
spy whom he thought dead, and Carina, a “femme-fatale” DEA agent, both of which have
ended badly, to say the least, and have had quiet an effect on Casey. However, Casey does
care about cutting his Bonsai Tree, and his most prized possession, his Queen Victoria car.
Also, although not at first, Casey is also seen to grow to Chuck, but that does not necessarily
mean he liked this...

Morgan is Chuck’s best friend, since 3rd grade. Morgan is by far one of the most loyal friends
ever. He is very supportive and protective of Chuck, wanting the best for him and often trying
his best to cover for Chuck when away from work.

15. One of the show’s biggest relationships is that between Morgan and Chuck. They really have
been through it all together. When Chuck’s mum took off when Chuck was in fifth grade,
Morgan was there to help him through it, even just by sharing a cherry cheesecake and
playing Legend of Zelda all night. The best way to describe their relationship is to simply use
the recently-made-popular name, “bromance”, and to compare them to another TV
“couple”/comedy duo – JD and Turk from Scrubs.

stole the bike.

16. Chuck lives with his sister, Ellie, and her boyfriend, Devon (a.k.a. Captain Awesome, as
“everything he does is awesome”). Functional sibling relationships seem to be rarity on
television, but Chuck and Ellie Bartowski have made it work. Although Chuck has to lie to her
on a regular basis, and Ellie has a tendency to nag Chuck about his ambitions, relationships
(with Sarah) and future, the brother and sister duo put each other above everything else, as
they have spent most of their lives without their parents. Their familial love stays sweet
without being overboard, and that honest devotion is a nice respite after dealing with your
own family.

17. Chuck is good old-fashioned fun, an enjoyable hour of television that doesn't weigh you down
with constant death, darkness, or doom. It's the sort of show you want to watch while eating
ice cream with chocolate sauce and sprinkles. The characters keep quipping even when the
bullets are flying, and this is the sort of show where even the bad guys have a brilliant sense
of humour.
And through it all, the show reminds us that friends and family are what's most important. Oh,
well, and saving the world's nice too.
Also, on what other show can you use a porn star-computer virus to disable a bomb? Or
evacuate an entire store - bad guys included - with the word 'pineapple'? How about averting
World War III with an old-school arcade game of Missile Command and a song (Tom Sawyer)
by Rush?
Paralleling Chuck's struggles in the spy world with Morgan's struggles at the Buy More shows
that the two really aren't so different after all. You too can survive in the world of espionage
with the knowledge gained from a trip to Comic-Con or the Buy More.

18. My brother, Rob Beard, undertook some research on my behalf, to find out how many people
in the UK watch Chuck already. As you can see from the results, the first season had an
average of 272,385 thousand viewers, with an average of being the second most watched
thing on Virgin1 during its airing, although it was the most watched programme for seven
weeks. The second season, so far, has an average of 226,833 thousand viewers, and an
average rank 3 for the most watched programme on Virgin1.

19. There are many guest stars on Chuck. They may not be the huge names some other shows
draw in, but it's always nice to see familiar faces that have been out of the limelight for awhile,
and the Chuck writers have a knack for using those guest spots to lampoon the actors'
previous roles. A wink to the audience, and it's all in good fun, plus they just keep coming - I
guess us fans aren't the only ones who want to play in Chuck's playground.

there. Thanks for listening.

(Emmet: “What do you think you’re gonna do with the rest of your life!?
Chuck: “Anything I want.”),

Oh, but before I do go – Jordan (student in class – point?), you told me this morning that I
successfully persuaded you to watch Chuck last night.... Well, I’ve got news for you – Chuck
wasn’t on last night! It’s on tonight – but the test will be on Monday.

Thanks again.
