Definition
Definition

LOAD BEARING MEMBER

A longitudinal load-carrying member of uniform
section spanning between supports.

GRATING
An open rigid assembly of metal bars where the
bearing bars (main member) running in one
direction are crossed by cross bars running at
right angle to bearing bars.

NET AREA
The area of flooring remaining after deducting
cut-outs. (A x B - C x D)

PITCH
The distance measured from centre to centre of
load-bearing bars or from centre to centre of
transverse bars.

TOE PLATE (KICKING PLATE)

A flat bar around a cut-out of a flooring panel
projecting above the top of the load-bearing
bars.

GROSS AREA
The total area of flooring including wastage /
Cut-out area (A x B)

SPAN (LENGTH)
Length or span is the overall dimensions of
flooring panel parallel with the load-bearing bar.

ERECTION CLEARANCE
The space provided between the edges of a
flooring panel and the adjacent structure, or
between flooring panels, to facilitate erection.

CARRIER / END PLATE

A plate fixed to a stair tread for fixing to a
stringer.

12
Definition
BAND / FRAME BAR
A flat bar welded to a side end of gratings panel
along the line of a cut out and extending neither
above nor below the bearing bars.

CUT OUT
An area of flooring removed to permit pipes,
plant and structural columns to pass through or to
clear obstructions.

CURB ANGLE
A member fixed to concrete or supporting
steelwork at the perimeter of a flooring area.

SERRATIONS
Notches cut in the top surfaces of the load-
bearing bars to improve slip resistance.

STRAIGHT SHAPING
Part of a cut out which has straight edges.

TREAD
A panel of grating having carriers with or without
nosing attached by welding designs specially to
serve as stair tread.

WIDTH
The overall dimension of a flooring panel
measured at right angles to the load-bearing
bars. (This dimension is always referred to as
width even if exceeds the length.)

CURVED SHAPING
Part of a cut out which is curved.

NOSING
Section member serving as the front or the
loading edge of a stair tread or the gratings at
the head of a stair.

13
Customized Gratings
Product range

Once the grating panels are produced, they are fabricated into customized
size as per client specifications to ensure quick and easy installation at site.
The gratings are primarily classified into rectangular and circular types
which can be with or without notches. With the use of CNC machines,
Indiana ensures high accuracy in fabrication.

Rectangular Gratings
Rectangular gratings are non-
radial gratings which may or may
not include cut-outs /openings.

Circular Gratings
Indiana also fabricates gratings for
circular or radial layout as per client
requirement. These are primarily
installed around vessels or on
tanks.

14
Heavy duty Gratings

Product range
Heavy duty gratings are designed
to service applications subject to
heavy rolling and static loads. Since
conditions can range from light to
heavy vehicular traffic, heavy duty
gratings are fabricated in a wide
range of bearing bar sizes and
spacing.

They are used extensively in

mining, power generation,
highways, airfields and on truck

or without checker plate.

Trench Gratings
Trench gratings are used around
pools, sidewalks, residential and
commercial areas as well as
peripheral areas in industrial sites
that require surface drainage in
shallow excavations. They are also
used in underground car parks.

15
FRP Gratings
Product range

Indiana can provide Moulded and Pultruded types of Fibreglass Reinforced

Plastic gratings (FRP) for walkways and other allied usages in . FRP gratings
are used in installations where optimum chemical resistance, fire
retardance, high strength to weight ratio, electrical insulation and
ultraviolet protection are primary requirements.

Moulded Gratings
Moulded FRP gratings are
produced by continuous
interweaving of wetted fiberglass
strands with thermosetting resin
systems. Liquid resin is manually
poured over the glass rovings in
the standard mould.

Moulded gratings are then taken

out of the mould after complete
curing of the resin.

Pultruded Gratings
Pultruded sections are produced
by continuously drawing glass
strands, mat/cloth and surface veil
through a resin where the material
is impregnated with liquid resin.
Desired shapes are formed and
cured as they are pulled through a
heated steel die and cut to required
lengths. These bars are then
assembled with Cross bars to
achieve the desired shape and size.

preferred where the application
demands for hygienic and
anticorrosive gratings. Stainless
steel gratings are mainly used in
industries such as food processing,
pharma, chemical, offshore
platforms, petrochemical, water
treatment plants, hydro
processing, and breweries.

Indiana offers Stainless Steel

gratings with SS 304, 304L, 316 and
316L grade materials.

Grating Clamps
Grating Clamps are simple
fasteners that allow grating to be
clamped to steel structures.
Grating Clamps are suitable for
industrial environments where
drilling and welding are not
allowed at site.

Mild Steel Dowel Connectors

Dowel Connectors are available for

20NB, 25NB, 30NB and
40NBnominal bore tube with
galvanized finish each
dowel is supplied with two pieces
of allen screws of 6mm diameter .

Malleable Cast Dimpled Fittings

Dowel Connectors are available for

25 NB tube only and are supplied
with galvanized finish. The
connectors are secured to the rail
by dimples spaced at 12.5mm or
25mm from the end of tubing.

Spring Joints

Spring Joints are simple, strong,

neat and ideal for onsite use.
They are made from plastic
coated spring steel ferrule,
which can be easily pressed
using a clamp and is then
inserted inside a pipe. Once the
clamp is released, the ferrule
expands fits on the inner
surface of the pipe thereby
tightening the joint.

These are fabricated from Pultruded fiberglass components. The rail

systems are particularly well suited to corrosive environments found in
industrial, chemical and wastewater treatment plants as well as commercial
structures with salt air corrosion.

Fiberglass Handrail Systems are:

l Corrosion resistant l Easy to field fabricate
l Structurally lightweight l Low in thermal conductivity
l Easy to install l Low electrical conductivity

Surface Coating

Surface Coating
Hot-dip galvanizing is the process Indiana's galvanizing plant has
of coating iron or steel with a zinc been imported from Europe. The
layer by passing the steel through a dimensions of galvanizing bath are
molten bath of zinc at a 8 m long X 1.2m wide X 2.5m deep.
temperature of around 860⁰F The plant is designed and
(460⁰C). When exposed to the equipped to match international
atmosphere, pure zinc reacts with standards and is maintained and
oxygen to form zinc oxide, which operated by qualified and trained
further reacts with carbon dioxide personnel. Hot dip galvanizing is
to form zinc carbonate, a dull grey, carried out as per various
fairly strong material that resists standards including IS 2629, ASTM
corrosion in many circumstances, A123, EN ISO 1461, DIN 50976 and
protecting the steel from the As 4680
corrosive elements.

Galvanized steel is widely used in

applications where rust resistance
is needed and can be identified by
the crystallization pattern on the
surface.

42
Packing
Packing
After galvanizing or painting, a
hard punched erection mark is
highlighted by a permanent
marker before bundling of
handrails.

The handrails are then arranged in

bundles as per client's
specifications or as per Indiana's
standard packing procedure.

These bundles are then tied using

high tensile strips. Bundle Number
is marked to ensure traceability.

Handrails can also be packed in

wooden boxes or peuets alongwith
shrink / plastic wrapping based on
client's specifications.
