Recruitment and Selection

This pack contains a series of worksheets designed to help you develop your knowledge of
recruitment and selection.

Whilst working through this pack you will have the opportunity to work in groups,
individually, and participate in whole class discussions.

You should follow the instructions on the pages in order to complete the worksheets, and
seek help from your teacher where appropriate.

Some of the worksheets have space provided where you should write your answers. Where
this is not the case you should use a separate piece of paper and keep it securely in your
folder, after the appropriate worksheet.

Your teacher will tell you when to hand in all of your completed worksheets and
supporting documents that you produce.

The following symbols are designed to help you:

It is important that you bring this pack with you to all future lessons.

Recruitment and Selection

The terms ‘recruitment’ and ‘selection’ are often referred to as meaning the same thing,
however it is important that we understand that they are in fact two very different things.
Recruitment is all about the job itself. For example, what the job is, what it entails, what
qualifications are needed to do the job and how the company can attract the best
candidates. Selection on the other hand, is all about choosing the best applicant from all
those who may apply.

TASK 1 Suggest three reasons why a job vacancy may arise within a business

3. ___________________

TASK 2 As a class, discuss what the stages of recruitment and selection are. On a separate piece of
paper note down the seven stages and some brief notes about each from the whiteboard.

TASK 3 You are employed in the personnel department of a business of your choice (it may be
fictional if you wish). Using your notes and textbooks, draw up a person specification and
a job description for a position that has arisen within the business.

You should use a computer to produce professional looking business documents.

.
Filling the Vacancy

Now that you have drawn up a person specification and job description, you must decide
how you are going to fill the vacancy. There are two ways in which a business can fill a
vacancy: internally or externally.

Selection Process

Once the ‘recruitment’ has been done, at a lot of expense to the business, it is hoped that
there will be a number of people interested in filling the vacancy. The business must then
find out who these people are, and decide if they are suitable.

TASK 10 Discuss as a class, the following steps that a business takes to select the best applicant. In
the spaces provided make some notes from the board.

1. Send interested parties an Application form or a Curriculum Vitae (C.V)

2. When the application forms or C.V’s have been returned, the personnel
department will sift through them and create a short list of applicants

by letter or telephone to offer them the job. .

candidates.
