Artifact #5: App Review.

This artifact, a technology application review, was informative to say the least. The

purpose of this artifact was to research different apps that can be used in the classroom by

teachers or students. Before completing this artifact, I knew there were specific apps that could

be downloaded onto devices for students to use however, what I did not know was that there was

such a wide variety of them based on grade level and subject matter. The apps that I chose for

this assignment are much more than just games for students to engage in, they are apps that can

be used to create projects, review topics, and explore the world. I think it is important as an

educator to keep up with the technological advances that are created by such brilliant people.

Seeing that students today are more likely to become engaged in a lesson that incorporates newer

technology, I will definitely be incorporating the apps I chose to research along with many others

into my everyday classroom.

Connections to Standards

INTASC Standards

Standard #7: Planning for Instruction.

The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning

goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and

pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context.

Standard #8: Instructional Strategies.

The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage

learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills

to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.

NYS Code of Ethics for Educators

Principle 3: Educators commit to their own learning in order to develop their practice.

Educators recognize that professional knowledge and development are the foundations of their

practice. They know their subject matter, and they understand how students learn. Educators

respect the reciprocal nature of learning between educators and students. They engage in a

variety of individual and collaborative learning experiences essential to develop professionally

and to promote student learning. They draw on and contribute to various forms of educational

research to improve their own practice.

App Review

App Image:

App Title: Explain Everything

App Price: Individual Monthly $4.99

Individual Yearly $24.99

Subject Area: All - Math, Science, Social Studies, ELA, Special Education

Rationale for Curriculum Use: Explain Everything is a great app for student collaboration and

expression. This app can be used by the entire class as a whole, small group, or individual

students. Projects can really come to live using this tool as well as student presentations. Having

a space to have ideas come to live using technology really fuels creativity especially when one

can bring in other forms of media and turn the whole thing into something amazing.

NYS P-12 Common Core/NYS Standards:

R.L.5.3 Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or

events in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the

text (e.g., how characters interact).

App Image:

App Title: EdPuzzle

App Price: Free

Subject Area: All - Math, Science, Social Studies, ELA, Special Education

Rationale for Curriculum Use: EdPuzzle is a resource comparable to YouTube, however

EdPuzzle takes all of the advertisements out of the videos. Teachers today are using YouTube

more and more to convey another meaning of education to their students. Although teachers

should be viewing their materials before the intended lesson, teachers have ended up in rough

waters with students, parents and even administration for what the students have ended up

seeing. EdPuzzle eliminates those potential situations.

NYS P-12 Common Core/NYS Standards:

2.NBT.4 Compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones

digits,

using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.

App Image:
App Title: IXL

App Price: Families $9.95 / month

A teacher’s license for 90 students or less costs $249

For independent schools or entire districts, one must apply for a quote on the IXL

website.

Subject Area: Math

Rationale for Curriculum Use: IXL can be used for several different contents: math, science,

social studies, ELA, and Spanish. Teachers can assign sections for students to practice along.

IXL has all topics covered within the Common Core Standards for grades Kindergarten through

twelfth grade. IXL also analyzes data based on the information given from students while

answering questions. This can be used to help students review topics, learn new topics, or catch

up on missed work.

NYS P-12 Common Core/NYS Standards:

4.NBT.5 Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and

multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of

operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or

area models.

App Image:
App Title: Expeditions (Google)

App Price: Free

Subject Area: Social Studies

Rationale for Curriculum Use: Google expeditions can be used on almost all smart devices

even though it is a Google app. Using expeditions, the class can go on fake field trips rather often

to help visualize what is being discussed in class. Field tips are very costly and if students have

their own smart devices from home or within the school, this is a great opportunity for them to

experience different places and things that they may never otherwise see.

NYS P-12 Common Core/NYS Standards:

3.2 The location of world communities can be described using geographic tools and vocabulary.

3.2a World communities can be located on globes and maps.

Students will examine where each selected world community is located.
