MODULE AIM
To enable the student to understand, and apply in a design context, the principles of
electrical and electronic technology and electromagnetism.
(ii) To familiarise the student with basic electronics from a product design perspective.
(iii) To enable the student to analyse d.c and simple a.c. circuits.
(iv) To equip the student with a basic understanding of electrical hazards and their
avoidance.
(v) To apprise the student of how power supplies for industry, homes and vehicles are
produced.
(1) Define and explain the main electrical quantities, terms and units.
(ii) Understand and analyse D.C. and simple A.C.. circuits.
(iii) Be able to assess simple product designs for electrical safety and to make them
electrically safe.
(iv) Explain national and vehicular power supply systems.
(v) Appreciate the alternatives for electric drive selection and select suitable drives in
simple cases.
(vi) Understand the basics of analogue and digital electronics.
(vii) Understand how electrical involvement contributes to product and vehicle design.
INDICATIVE CONTENT
Basic D.C. circuit theory. Introduction to single- and three-phase a.c. circuits.
Electromagnetism - forces on conductors, induced E.M.F. in moving conductors and the
transformer principle. Descriptive treatment of D.C and A.C. motors and transformers
and their applications. Rectification.
Electrical safety.
Introduction to analogue and digital electronics - operational amplifiers, logic gates,
simple applications.
Product and vehicle aspects - motors, generators, batteries, power supplies, electronics,
safety.
Students will be supported by lectures (1 hour/week) and tutorial and laboratory work
(average 1 hr/week); the latter will include time for small-group student support. It is
intended that the approach be as unmathematical as possible, though engineering of
whatever kind is an essentially quantitative activity! Guided investigation will play a
significant part.
FEEDBACK
The students will undertake formative tasks during each tutorial and receive direct feedback from the tutor.
The feedback from the presented assignment will take the form of written comments.
The module Blackboard is well populated with learning resources including notes, presentations case
study and solved tutorials.

for this module?
If sub-tasks / activities are to be used this must be approved within the Faculty prior to approval. Sub-
task / activity marks will be recorded locally and extenuating circumstances, extensions, referrals and
deferrals will not apply to sub-tasks / activities.
FINAL TASK
According to the Assessment Information shown in the Module Descriptor, Task No.
which task will be the LAST TASK to be taken or handed-in? (Give task 1
number as shown in the Assessment Information Grid in Section 1 of the
Descriptor)
