Introduction
There is value of discipline in all walks of life. Whether at school or at home, in the office or
in the factory, in the playground or in the battlefield, discipline is a necessity. Discipline
gives us an opportunity to learn, experience and grow. Without discipline, there will be
complete chaos and disorder. There will be no peace and progress. To be guided by rules, to
pay due regard to elders and superior officers, to obey them and to behave in an orderly
manner, all these come under the term discipline.

Discipline is action or inaction that is regulated to be in accordance (or to achieve accord)

with a system of governance. Discipline is commonly applied to regulating human
and animal behaviour, and furthermore, it is applied to each activity-branch in all branches of
organized activity, knowledge, and other fields of study and observation. Discipline can be a
set of expectations that are required by any governing entity including the self, groups,
classes, fields, industries, or societies. Discipline is a moral obligation among many groups of
people. Disciplined behaviour is required by some laws and other legal obligations.
Commercial entities can also put in place strict disciplinary requirements for the length of the
commercial agreement. Airlines enforce strict disciplinary and conduct rules upon flight
passengers.

In the military, discipline regards the efforts made by superiors to punish the serviceperson.
In academia, discipline can also regard the educators' responses and efforts that are designed
to punish the student(s). In animal husbandry and training, the animals may be disciplined to
perform specific task and activities without errors. Additionally, animals can discipline their
young through numerous methods; including nips, bites, and grips. So, discipline is needed
everywhere. The most important rule of discipline is obedience. You must not ask why or
how. You must have respect for rules and orders.
Discipline- It’s Meaning
Discipline refers to:

 the practice of training, helping and guiding a person to adhere to a pre-determined

code of conduct, or to obey to a set of rules,
 the actions required to be taken when a person breaches a pre-determined rule,
 the methods deployed for controlling a person’s behavior in a way that encourages a
willingness to obey rules and orders,
 enforcing obedience to set rules, through punitive methods.

“Discipline” comes from the Latin word”disciplina” which means instruction. In most general
sense discipline refers to giving systematic instructions but in real life, discipline is the bridge
between goals and accomplishment. Discipline directs work, making it fruitful and excellent.
Discipline is the first law of nature. The sun rises and brings the day. It sets and there is night
and the moon and the stars are visible. Man is also a unit of nature so just like nature if
human beings do not observe discipline the entire social structure would fall like a house of
cards Discipline is necessary on all walks of life , school , college, workplace or society.

Discipline therefore, is a way of life.It is necessary for proper functioning of society and for
becoming better citizens and more importantly better human beings. Discipline is necessary
for all achievement, especially great achievements. Without discipline there can be no
scientific advances (eg no penicillin), no entrepreneurial, industrial or technological
achievement (eg no mass-produced motor car), no settled system of law and order, no literary
achievement and no exploration and development of a new land (eg Australia since 1770)
because all of these matters require the trained and balanced minds and bodies. Sir Smith has
rightly said "Discipline is the refining fire by which talent becomes ability.” So we must
observe disciple to make this school and world a better place to live.
Value of Discipline

Discipline is a concept everyone is aware of, but few truly understand. The most successful
people in life exert discipline on a daily basis. It is vital to every living being and without it,
the world around us would be chaos.

To be a great and inspiring leader, you must constantly display restraint. Not giving into
something you truly want is a sign of strength. Making the right decisions in life can make or
break you, and this type of person tends to make the right decisions. Regardless of where you
exert this self-restraint, it will help to promote achievement in your life.

"Talent without discipline is like an octopus on roller skates. There's plenty of movement, but
you never know if it's going to be forward, backwards, or sideways."

Discipline brings stability and structure into a person’s life. It teaches a person to be
responsible and respectful. The observance of well-defined rules is the basis of society. If
there were no discipline, people would do whatever they wanted and make mistakes without
putting the consideration of others first and foremost. It promotes good human behavior to
better society and make it a more enjoyable place for everyone to live. he ability for an
individual to have self-restraint allows them to behave in a consistently stringent and
controlled manner. A lack of this ability can have disastrous results. Do you think a company
is going to tolerate a person who is consistently late to work or who procrastinates in doing
their work? It is evident how these behaviors will weaken the image of a business.

"Mental toughness is many things and rather difficult to explain. Its qualities are sacrifice and
self-denial. Also, most importantly, it is combined with a perfectly disciplined will that
refuses to give in. It's a state of mind -- you could call it character in action." — Vince
Lombardi.

Think of athletics: discipline is the fundamental aspect on which sports have been created.
Every player must adhere to the rules of the game. This is why umpires and referees exist.
Whoever does not follow these guidelines will be penalized for violating the rules of the
sport.
Persons in high authority must demonstrate high levels of restraint constantly; they cannot
just speak however they see fit. A smart leader knows when to hold his tongue and when to
speak. Discipline helps to train a person’s mind and character, building a sense of self-control
and the practice of obedience. "Self-discipline is a form of freedom. Freedom from laziness
and lethargy, freedom from the expectations and demands of others, freedom from weakness
and fear — and doubt. Self-discipline allows a pitcher to feel his individuality, his inner
strength, his talent. He is master of, rather than a slave to, his thoughts and emotions."

There are two types of discipline: internal and external. Internal discipline is your self-
restraint and your ability to differentiate right from wrong. External discipline is according to
societal norms, such as following the law. It is not sufficient enough to possess great
qualities; we need the ability to manage them.

Too many people are susceptible to instant gratification. People lacking control are unable to
look at the long-term effects of their actions. This further demonstrates why this is such a
crucial skill to have in life. It is probably the most crucial factor when trying to achieve a
goal. It allows you to choose from different options and by following these options you can
garner the success you sought out for. It additionally gives you the authority to overcome any
obstacles that come your way.

“Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment. This ability can be developed or
strengthened at any given time if you put your mind to it. Make promises and make sure you
deliver. Make the genuine effort to align your actions and behaviors with your thoughts.
Exercise; get your mind and body into shape. Resist the urge to give into negative behaviors,
instead focus on all of the positive attributes.
Why is Discipline so important?

The word “Discipline” comes from the word “Disciple” meaning a learner. Discipline means
tearing to obey certain rules. Without it, there will be complete chaos and disorder
everywhere in our society. Discipline is of great importance in every walks of our life.
Without it, we cannot prosper in this world. There cannot be any peace or happiness in the
family, if there is no discipline. All the members must obey the head of the family. So we
must first learn the lesson of discipline at home .We must obey the orders of our superiors. In
our childhood, we do not know what is good for us. If we do as we like, then we shall be
ruined. An army cannot win a battle if the soldiers do not obey the orders of the commander.

Every student should practice discipline in his school life. The teachers cannot properly teach
in the class if the students are not disciplined. Just think of an school, where the
students come at irregular hours, go home when it suits their sweet will. Little education can
be imparted in such a school and such little education will not be of any use. Students will not
be able to prepare themselves for examination, and their results will be poor.

Discipline is also necessary in a man’s individual life. Without self discipline a man can
never shine and succeed in life. In public life, discipline is of great value. A nation cannot
rise, if the people do not know the value of discipline. People must follow their leaders. If
people go on according to their own wishes, there, cannot be any order and no useful work
can be done by them. An organization cannot be successful if the people do not obey its laws
and rules. Similarly, no play is possible, if the players do not follow the rules in the play
ground. The leader must learn to rule him. If he cannot rule himself, he cannot rule others.

Discipline is very important in the battle field. If there is no discipline among the soldiers,
they cannot win any battle. They do great harm to the country. The country becomes weak. A
disciplined army is great source strength to the country. It has also to be remembered that
those who are not disciplined themselves cannot expect obedience from others when they
themselves are put in power. As everybody hopes to rise to power this should teach to submit
to discipline in their own lives.
 The need for Discipline exists everywhere: In this wide world, wherever we
turn our eyes, we find the reign of discipline. All the beauty of the world owes its
origin to the inner harmony of nature. In our own homes, too, there is a need for
discipline. Every member of a family obeys the head of the family for practical
reasons. The head of the family earns money and supports his dependents. The
mistress of the house sees that the household is properly maintained. Naturally, all the
members of the family obey these two people.

 Discipline is of utmost importance in student-life: If young students do not

obey their teachers, they will deprive themselves of much of the training they should
have at this period. Such young men may struggle to do the task that are easily done
by others. A discipline student learns a lot more during his school days. Society
accepts disciplined person as fit for holding any responsible position in life.
Therefore, it is the bounden duty of all students to acquire the habit of discipline in
the formative stage of their life. A school without discipline can never impart good
education to its students.

 Discipline in the playground and battlefield: Discipline is of great value in

the playground as well. A well-disciplined team is likely to win a game in spite of its
other weaknesses. However, without discipline even a very strong team cannot fare
well. Again, in an army soldiers have to be disciplined. If soldiers do not obey their
commander, the army becomes a rabble.

 Disciplined liberty necessary: At first sight, it may appear to us that discipline

takes away individual liberty. However, liberty without discipline leads to absolute
lawlessness.
Advantages & Disadvantages of Discipline

Advantages:

1. Being focused: Being disciplined helps one stay focused towards his work,
activities or goals. A person with strong goals are more focused and keep up to work
in time in everyday life. vice-verse any one with discipline has to keep his mind
focused on his work or goals avoiding mental disturbances. If not he cannot complete
his work in time and also be undisciplined.

2. Respected by others: Discipline helps command respect from others. Many

struggle to gain respect from others in the workplace. But the easiest way to get
respect is to be disciplined. People around and also the sub-ordinates respect a person
who is disciplined.

3. Stay healthy: Disciplined life includes regular habits like taking food, medicine (if
any), having bath, exercise, walking and sleeping at right time. Exercise and other
regular habits will tune the body and mind so well that always the person remains
healthy. Even in case of chronic disease taking medicines at regular time helps get
well soon. Having food in time is very important because even food is also a
medicine. Read the importance of food for life.

4. Stay active: Discipline is a way of positive outlook to life. There is an enthusiasm

and self confidence from within. So it keeps one active and not lazy instead.

5. Self control: A person with self discipline has more self control over himself. He is
careful in his use of words while talking, his behaviour etc. avoiding himself from
being entangled in silly problems. This way he also builds good relations with people.
6. Better Education: Discipline in education is very important for better education.
Education is incomplete without learning discipline. Classroom discipline helps
students to listen to teachings well and also cover the entire syllabus. While coming
to school in time helps them awake early, attend nature calls, have bath and breakfast
in time. Hence discipline in schools helps students to stay healthy which is good for
growth of both body and mind.

7. Stay stress or tension free: One has tension during competitive exams or daily
routine work. This is an internal anxiety or unknown fear about the outcome of the
work. Staying disciplined helps one study well in advance and not just before exams
so he remains tension free. If it is a work place, due to discipline the work is planned
well and executed in time so there is no stress. So discipline helps one stay stress free
rise your self esteem and also get out of possible depression.

Disadvantages:

The chief disadvantage of positive discipline is that it isn't appropriate in all situations. For
example, if an employee commits a serious infraction, such as physically attacking a
colleague, it’s not appropriate to focus on amplifying the positive aspects of his behavior or
resolving the core reasons for the dispute. In this case, the employee’s infraction is serious
enough that positive discipline alone is insufficient and perhaps even irresponsible.

1. Rebellious Behaviour: Rebellious behaviour in children, especially teenagers,

can stem from very strict parenting. Strict rules without equal love and affection can
trigger defiant and rebellious behaviour. Overbearing rules without a strong
relationship causes children to act out. Also, parents who are too controlling and do
not allow children to make their own choices can trigger rebellious behaviour.
Teenagers in particular need to have their thoughts and emotions validated and not
micro-managed.

2. Dis-Respectful Behaviour: Children often become verbally disrespectful to

overly strict parents. When children are told not to speak in a particular manner, they
can become even more disrespectful, whether it is in the moment or at a later time.
Preteens and teenagers, in particular, do not like being told what to say or think.
Shouting orders, handing down severe punishments and trying to control a child only
adds to the disrespectful language and behaviour.

3. Low Self- Esteem: Children look to their parents for self-esteem. Supportive
parents give children a sense of love, empowerment and capability. On the other hand,
parents who demand perfection and hand down strict punishments can have the
opposite effect. Thus, if children are constantly being reprimanded and disciplined,
then they feel unlovable, stupid or unworthy. Low self-esteem affects the remainder
of a child or teenager's life.

4. Anger: If children are continually exposed to anger or aggressive behaviour, they

begin to internalize and imitate this kind of behaviour. Excessive discipline can be
expressed through yelling, verbal abuse, physical abuse or severe punishments. This
type of strict discipline and aggressive behaviour can be passed down to a young
child, preteen or teenager. When children do not get what they want, whether it is a
minor or major thing, they can react with similar aggression and anger. Therefore,
disciplinarians must carefully balance between love, affection, gentleness and
discipline and enforcement.
Methods to Achieve Discipline

 Think about why you want to discipline yourself. Is there a particular

goal you're trying to achieve but you feel certain obstacles are getting in the way?
Maybe you want to become an early riser, but have a habit of sleeping really late.
Maybe your once-stellar musical skills are deteriorating because of lack of
practice. Or perhaps you're trying to lose weight, but don't like to exercise. Set
some time aside to think through this so that you can narrow down your goal-
setting.

 Visualize your goal. Visualization is key to successful goal-setting. For one,

you must think clearly about your goals and clarify what they look like. Then, you
must surround yourself - either physically or mentally - with these goals.

 One specific form of visualization that has been shown to be very effective at helping you
reach goals is called process simulation. This tactic involves envisioning yourself taking the
necessary steps to accomplish a goal, rather than just imagining the end result.

 Other ways to practice visualization can be done through daily meditation or by creating a
vision board of your goals.

 Create an action plan. This can be done in table form, either by hand or by using
a PC package such as MS Word or Excel. Don't worry about filling it in at this point.
That's next! Consider adding a relevant goal title at the top of this form, such
as Workout Regularly. After doing that add the following column headings in
sequence:
 Action
 Time to Begin
 Potential Problems
 Strategies to Overcome Potential Problems
 Progress Report
 Once done, fill in the column boxes under the appropriate headings.
 Prepare to take action and decide when to begin. Actions will be the steps
you must attempt to work towards your goal. After you come up with some
meaningful action steps. think of a time to start your new self-discipline goal.

 Anticipate potential problems and strategize to overcome

them. Consider any difficulties that are likely to occur with the action steps in your
plan and devise a plan to handle them as they happen. For example, if you decided to
pick the "Work out each day at 6am" action but know it's a pretty sure thing that
when the alarm goes off you're only going to press the "snooze" button and give in to
the temptation to doze off again then you could jot down something like "I'll just fall
asleep again" .

 Update your progress report regularly and review the plan. Start your
actions and implement your decided problem solving strategies at the planned times.
When carrying them out, make a note of the date and whether or not the result was
successful. Once the time period for your plan elapses, look through the progress
comments you logged during that time.

 Reframe your mistakes. Even if you totally bombed your first attempt, it's worth
it to keep pushing towards reaching your goal of becoming more self-disciplined. But,
growing will require reframing mistakes into learning opportunities. Just don't give
up!

Researchers found that there are two potential brain responses to making mistakes:
immediately strive to problem-solve or shut down. People who pay attention to their mistakes
are more likely to learn new ways of correcting them in the future. People who overlook (i.e.
or shut down neurologically) their mistakes do not change or improve them. Be sure to look
closely at where you're lacking and think of how you can improve in the future.
Conclusion

Disciplines are the be-all and end all of life. Life without discipline is no life. Just as an un
pruned garden is no garden but only a wild forest, life without discipline is mere existence
which even inanimate objects and animals and bacteria have.
So, to make human life worthwhile, discipline has to be observed. Nature follows all laws of
discipline. It is thus that the sun rises and sets and the flowers bloom and wither. Discipline
must be learnt early in life. It is in the fitness of things that the physical drills and sports have
been made compulsory in some institutions. These must be made compulsory in all schools
and colleges.

The first lessons of disciplines are learnt at home when the child is taught to obey his parents,
elders and teachers. When the children or young people play in the field or even in the street,
they follow certain rules of team-spirit. This set of rules is a part of the spirit of discipline,
provided these are followed in all sincerity. Discipline is not denial of liberty. In fact,
discipline and liberty go hand in hand. If we want liberty for ourselves, we have to grant
liberty to others also as others may also demand it in equal measure.

That can lead to chaos. So, we have to make a compromise and that is discipline. In other
words, we have voluntarily to curtail a part of liberty that we want and others have likewise
to do so for our sake. Thus, discipline ensures smooth flow of life.

Discipline is highly valuable in our every walk of life. We have to follow it all time whether
we are in the school, home, office, institutions, factory, playground, battlefield or other
places. It is the most important necessity of the happy and peaceful life. It gives us lots of
great opportunity, right way to go ahead, to learn new things in life, to experiences more
within less time, etc. and grow. Whereas, lack of discipline cause lots of confusion and
disorders. Indiscipline gives no peace and progress in the life instead creates lots of problem.
