Q1 . a) Consider a Pittsburgh seam coal that contains 77.2% C, .5.2% H, 1.2% N, 2.6% S, (5)
5.9% 0, and 7.9% ash by weight. The ultimate analysis is generally reported on an "as
received" basis, including the moisture in the chemical analysis. The molar
composition may be 'determined by dividing each of the mass percentages by the
atomic weight of the constituent. Find out the formula weight of the fuel for
stoichiometric calculations, if the composition is normalized with respect to carbon.
b) During a boiler trial, the dry flue gas analysis by volume was reported as: CO2, 13%; (10)
CO 0.3%; 02, 6%; and N2, 80.7%. The coal analysis on mass basis was reported as: C
62.4%; H2 4.2%; 02 4.5%; moisture 15%; and ash 13.9%.Calculate: (i) the theoretical
air required to burn 1 kg of coal (ii) the mass of air actually supplied per kg of coal,
and (iii) the amount of excess air supplied per kg of coal burnt. (Air contains 23%
oxygen on mass basis).
Q2. a) Discuss the working principle and operation of Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) with (7)
the help of neat sketch. What are the factors affecting its efficiency? •
b) Explain with the help of diagram the working principle and operation of air pollution (8)
control device which is most frequently used for the simultaneous removal of both
particulate and gaseous pollutants from flue gases? Write its advantages and
limitations.

Q3. a) What are the causes of ozone hole over Antarctica inspite of low anthropogenic 15)
activities in that region?
b) Discuss various mechanisms listed in Kyoto Protocol for the reduction of GHG (5)
emissions in order to meet the proposed targets.
c) Outline the causes& implications of chemical waste dumping taking a case stud y of
late 1970's as an example.
