2.0 OBJECTIVE

The main objective of this engineering report is to document the design

concept, hydraulic analysis and detail design on Storm Water
Management and Road & Drainage for the proposed development to be in
compliance with local authorities and Manual Saliran Mesra Alam Malaysia
(MASMA) requirements.

3.0 SITE DESCRIPTION

The development area is located at Mukim Pulai, Daerah Johor Bahru,

Johor Darul Takzim. The site is accessible through the road network within
the school compound. This site is part of the overall continuation of the
earlier master plan development which consists of new preparatory school
buildings, sport hall and 100 spaces of open car park as shown in Figure
3.2. Currently, the land for new preparatory school and new car park are
vacant while the site for new sport hall is an open car park area.

Under existing condition, the surface runoff flows into the ponds and there
is a drain channelled the water runoff into “Sungai Melayu” river. The
distance from the Northern Boundary of the development to “Sungai
Melayu” is approximate 300m.

The proposed development cover an area of 1.88 hectares comprises of a

Preparatory School, Sports Hall and 100 open space car parks. The
breakdown of development areas and reference of Catchment Area is as shown

The controlled outflow from site will eventually flow into the detention pond on the
northwest of the current development area. The detention pond is part of the
previous phase 1 development which has already catered for this phase 2
expansion.

5.0 DESIGN CRITERIA

The design of the Road & Drainage and Detention Basin of this report has been
carried out in accordance to the design criteria tabulated in the following sections:

5.1 Runoff computation

Storm water runoff computation is based on Rational Method and is undertaken

in accordance with the procedures set out in Section 14.5.1 of Urban Stormwater
Management Manual for Malaysia (MSMAM).

The runoff coefficient, C used based on the land use category are:

- for major system (>10 years ARI): 0.95

- for minor system (<10 years ARI): 0.90

5.2 Rainfall Intensity

The coefficients for the IDF Equations are abstracted from Table 13.A1 for Johor
Bahru city. The computation and the rainfall intensity curves are as shown in
Appendix C.

5.3 Design Annual Recurrence Interval (ARI)

The design ARI has been established in accordance to Table 4.1 of
MSMAM and is tabulated as follow:

Major Drainage System (Main Drain): 50 ARI

Catchment A1 <40ha

Major Drainage System (Main Drain): 100 ARI

Outside Development Area >40ha

Minor Drainage System: 10 ARI

Roadside and perimeter drainage networks

5.4 Catchment Area

The runoff catchment area that drained into the existing detention pond is
approximately 1.87 ha. The runoff coefficients for various land uses selected in
accordance to Design Chart 14.3 and 14.4 of MASMA.

The carrying capacity and the velocity of the drain sections is computed from
Manning’s Equation as follows:-

v =1/n x R 2/3 x S 1/2 ………………velocity

Q = v x A = 1/n x R 2/3 x S 1/2 x A……………..capacity
where,

6
SGT KONSULT SDN BHD
Engineering Report for Road & Drainage

v - velocity of flow in meter per second (m/s)

Q - flow in meter cube per second (m3/s)
A - area of flow in meter square (m²)
S - slope in meter per meter (m/m)
n - Manning’s roughness coefficient

P - wetted perimeter of drain in meter (m) R =

A/P - radius in meter (m)

5.5 Further design data adopted in the design are as follows:-

Maximum grass swale velocity = 2.0 m/s
Maximum open drain velocity = 4.0 m/s
Minimum open drain velocity = 0.6 m/s
Maximum pipe/box culvert velocity = 8.0 m/s
Minimum pipe/box culvert velocity = 0.6 m/s

6.0 PROPOSED DRAINAGE/RETENTION SYSTEM

The Road & Drainage Engineering Layout Plan is appended in Appendix A.

Minor drainage system has been adopted for this project. Thus, the network of
perimeter drainage system of 300m wide half round glazed ware (HRGW) drain
with brick wall has been designed to cater for the surface runoff within the
development compound.

Two new main drains will then channel the runoff from the perimeter drainage of
the car park (600mm wide earth drain) and preparatory school (300mm wide
HRGW drain) respectively to the existing detention pond. The 600mm wide earth
drain will run from the southern side of the car park and then towards the west to
link to the detention pond. The 300mm wide HRWG drain will link via the north
western side of the development.

For the sport hall which will be constructed on existing car park, the runoff will
channel via a new 300mm diameter reinforced concrete spun pipe to the existing
drainage which had been designed previously to cater for the car park runoff.

For location where the drainage cut thru the existing perimeter road (2 locations),
a 600mm diameter reinforced concrete spun pipe will be laid underneath the road
respectively.

7.0 CONCLUSION

Based on the hydraulic calculations and flow routing exercise for the drainage
system in Appendix B and Appendix C, the results shown that with the drainage
system have been appropriately sized to cater for the development and in
compliance with MASMA requirements.
