ydney is the capital city of New South Wales and Australia's largest city, with a population of more
than four million people. The city has many famous places. The harbor is one of the largest and most
beautiful in the world and Sydney Harbor Bridge is a great tourist attraction. Sydney is also the most
important port in Australia.
Nowadays, the most famous sight is the Opera House. It is considered one of the most beautiful modern buildings in the
world. The city also has many places of historical interest. In the areas called The Rocks and Paddington, for example,
you can still see some of the first houses that were built here.
For entertainment, there’s a lot to do in Sydney too. The city has many different kinds of restaurants, theaters, cinemas
and night-clubs. There is also a Zoo and a Koala Bear Park. Some of the best beaches in
Australia are here, too, like Bondi, Manly and Crow’s Nest. Surfing is the most popular sport
in Sydney.
The first people in Sydney were British convicted criminals sent to Australia to serve life
sentences. Sydney was a type of prison. Nowadays, most people in Sydney are still of British
origin but, since the end of World War II, large numbers of immigrants from other European
countries have made this city their home, and since 1960, many people from Asia have started
a new life in Sydney, too.
