Section 4: Letter of Reference
Use the space below to add any information that you think will be helpful in our assessment of this individual’s application.
Christina Fancey was in my Philosophy 1200 class in the Fall 2017 semester. I came to know her as a student with a
great work ethic and who is willing to apply herself to succeed. She gradually improved her mark in my course with each
paper she wrote, and sought extra help during my office hours. This pattern of a commitment to improvement is also
evident on her academic transcript, on which one observes that, since arriving at Memorial University in Fall 2016, her
marks have significantly improved each semester.

Christina is able to grasp new concepts quickly, and she internalizes and communicates information well. I can attest to
this based on one particularly positive experience I had with Christina. After the course midterm exam, on which
numerous students underperformed, I announced in class that those who were disappointed with their mark could come
and seek extra help. Christina came to my office hours and we came up with a plan to help her succeed. More
specifically, I offered that she could come by later that week for an oral exam, during which time I would ask her
questions related to the essay questions from the exam. I told her if she did better on the oral exam, I would replace her
mark on the essay portion of the exam with the grade of her oral exam.

Not only did Christina succeed, but I was thoroughly impressed with her ability to explain the key philosophical concepts
from the classic texts we read in the course. She also drew a diagram in front of me while explaining Plato's famous
cave analogy. This situation would present a significant amount of pressure for any second-year student, but Christina
rose to the challenge and performed exceptionally well. Her verbal communication skills are excellent. Her writing is also
good, but some further guidance on referencing would be helpful to her. As suggested above, her writing in particular
improved throughout the Fall semester 2017.

Christina showed initiative throughout the course and displayed an ability to learn new information quickly and
communicate it effectively. She also made good use of my office hours during the three times she came by. Additionally,
she is an enthusiastic, pleasant and kind person. She expressed a particular interest in the medical field and to making a
difference in people's lives. Moreover, she cares deeply for others, has excellent communication skills, and performs
well under pressure. I thus would not hesitate to recommend Christina as a student for the Bachelor of Nursing 4 Yr.
Collaborative Program and I am confident that she would make a superb nurse.
