ERS POSSIBLE QUESTIONS III-ARGON

1. Why do we transfer Fuel?

- We transfer fuel onboard the ship to allow weight distribution throughout the vessel,
prevent overflowing of tanks and in case of emergency.

2. Why do we heat fuel before transferring?

- To lower the viscosity of the fuel so that the pumps can easily suction the fuel
and transfer from one tank to another.

3. Why do we change over Fuel?

- We are Changing over fuel oils in ship's engine because it is important to keep a
check on NOx and SOx emissions while entering SECA.

SECA- Sulphur Emission Control Area

4. What is a settling tank?

- Also known as sedimentation tank which allows suspended particles to settle out
of fuel or flows slowly through the tank.

5. What happens if there is no settling tank?

- The solid sediments in the fuel will not be settled and the purifier will suffer.

6. What is a storage tank?

- This is where the fuel is stored before being pumped to the settling tank by the
transfer pump.

7. At which part of the ship a storage tank is located? Why

- It is located at the forward part of the ship for Stability Purposes, because in the
ER area the machineries are so heavy.

8. What is service tank?

- The tank in the fuel system into which fuel from all other tanks is pumped. The
fuel is then fed to the engine from the service tank.

9. What is purging?
- Purging is done before starting an auxiliary boiler in order to displace residual
combustible gases before starting is a normal safety practice.
10. Why do we blow off M/E?
- We blow off main engine to remove solid impurities to the cylinder liners and to
ensure that there is no JCW leakage.

11. What happened if you fail to blow off the ME?

- solid impurities on the cylinder will not be blown out which causes poor
combustion and you will not be able to rectify if there is JCW leaksage.

12. Why do we engage turning gear and turn the ME before starting?
- To ensure that the piston in each cylinder is free to move and ensure its smooth
turning before starting and to lubricate the moving parts.

13. If turning gear is engaged will you be able to start the ME? Why?
- You cannot start the ME because it has a safety lever fitted in the turning gear.
When Turning gear is engaged it is blocked and It is one of the safety features
fitted on the ME.

14. What is the purpose of T/C during startup of the M/E

- The purpose of a turbocharger is to increase the power output of an engine by
supplying compressed air to the engine intake manifold so increased fuel can be
utilised for combustion.

15. Purpose of A/Blowers

- It provides adequate pressure of flushing air for a safe start-up of the main
engine.

16. Why do we put A/Blowers in automatic mode?

- In order to automatically shut down when the main engine is already starting.

17. What is the ideal Lubrication mode?

- Lubricator is dependent on the movement of the crankshaft when the ME is not
running set the Lubricating oil in Higher mode and when the ME is running set it
to lower.

18. What is a Control Air?

- It is used to control the cylinder valves prior to starting in the system it has
usually lower pressure than starting air.
19. What is a starting air?
- It is used to start the Engine it has higher pressure at about between 25 and 42
bars.

20. Purpose of compressed air in deck?

- For cleaning purposes, ships whistle.

21. Purpose of drying compress air?

- To eliminate moisture in the compressed air to prevent from damaging the
equipments.

22. What is an Oil Mist Detector?

- OMD is fitted in each engine. OMD doesn't reduce or prevent the formation of
mist, but only give warning in case the concentration rises above the level at
which an explosion can take place.

23. What is FWG?

- It is an equipment used to produce Fresh water onboard the ship.

24. What is used to evaporate Seawater in FWG?

- The JCW from the ME is bypassed to the FWG to heat and Evaporates the SW
and turns into FW.

25. What is an Ejector pump?

- It creates vacuum in the evaporator of FWG

26. Why do we maintain vacuum in FWG?

- In order to lower the boiling point of the Seawater in the evaporator.

27. What is distillate pump?

- Pumps the FW produce in the FWG to the FW tanks.

28. Purpose of JCW?

- It is used to cool down the main engine when running and keep the main engine
at desired temperature during non-operation. It is also used to evaporate SW in
the Evaporator of the FWG.

29. What happened if you open the bypass in HT JCW system pipeline?
- It will go to the FWG to boil the SW to produce FW
30. What is Expansion tank?
- A small tank used to protect closed water heating systems and domestic hot
water systems from excessive pressure.

31. Purpose of vents in the tanks?

- Tank vents are required to maintain tanks at atmospheric pressure.

32. What is a Booster pump?

- It is a pump that increase the pressure of the fuel oil or any fluid.

33. What is a Feed Pump?

- It is used to feed fuel from the fuel tank or under high pressure to the fuel
injection system.

34. What is the purpose Decompressed air domestic tank?

- To supply air to the hydrophore.

35. What is a deaerator tank?

- A deaerator is a device that is widely used for the removal of oxygen and other
dissolved gases from the feedwater to steam-generating boilers.

36. What is the purpose of Upper and Lower Gravity tank in stern tube?
- When the ship is loaded we use the Upper Gravity tank and we use Lower gravity
tank when it is not loaded.

37. Purpose of Stern tube?

- is a hollow tube that runs through the bottom of the ship from the main engine
to the propeller. The ship's tail shaft (or propeller shaft), which transfers power
from the main engine.

38. Why do we put Steering gear in remote mode?

- In order for the bridge to control the steering gear and for auto piloting.

39. What is hydrophore tank?

- is a pressurized vessel that is used for drinking or technical water supply in
situations when the pressure in the pipeline is low.
40. Critical Speed
- In this condition the torsional vibration of the shaft increases greatly, and will
impose very high shear stress on the crankshaft. These levels of stress could
even cause crankshaft failure.
