“Accounting Profession: What Lies Ahead?”

The Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountant DavNor and Comval

Chapter celebrated the Accountancy Week 2018 yesterday, July 15, 2018 at
Robinson’s Place Tagum. This event focus on the seminar on “Accounting
Profession: What Lies Ahead?” and the participating schools were Assumption
College of Nabunturan, St. Mary’s College, UM Panabo, and UM Tagum College.
The welcome address was given by Ms. Jazel Mae Z. Celerinos, CPA and her
speech was encouraging us on what we have chosen. After that, the highlight of the
seminar began by welcoming the guest speaker which was Hon. Mark Romeo Lizada
Fuentes, CPA.who is one of the recently elected Board of Accountancy Member.

His lecture was about the Millennial CPAs of today, their characteristics and also
the impact of technology to them. He also talked about accounting career benefits,
the services offered by public accounting firms, the fields of accountancy, and the
possible positions an accountant can attain. Sir Romeo became an accountant in
1998, before I am even born and he enthusiastically shared to us his experiences in
the different fields of accounting, back to when he was not part of the board yet,
when he was working in Manila, his hardships, all the overtime, the deadlines he
needed to beat, and he even shared to us that what he only ate if there were
engagements just to cut expenses. He endure all of that just to gain experience
because for him, he needed that so that when the time comes that he will return to
Davao, he’ll have his own firm. Because of all of his sacrifices, he is now where he
wanted to be. I gained a lot of realizations and inspiration from his story because I
realized, it takes all the sacrifices you have to make in order for you to be great and
experience is the greatest advantage you have against the other CPAs.

Sir Romeo also gave updates in the profession, a little insight about the four new
accounting programs in the K12 curriculum which are the BS Accountancy, BS
Management Accounting, BS Accounting Information System, and BS Internal
Auditing. He also shared some new technological advancements in accounting such
as Robotics, that is an artificial intelligence used for correcting essay and problem
solving questions in an Outcome based CPA board examination; the use of
technology tools including cloud based systems, e-working papers for audit, virtual
accounting offices to make it more accessible for audits that have different locations;
the Center of accounting research and education with Doctoral Program on
Accountancy; CMO 27 which states the accounting case methods in all accounting,
auditing, and technical subjects in the accountancy programs; and sustainability and
environmental green accounting.

After the inspirational insight about what lies ahead in the accounting profession
by sir Romeo, snacks were given and while we were having snacks, four more
inspirational speakers spoke about what it takes to be an accountant. One speaker
also told us that when you are a beginner in the field of accounting it is okay to have
small compensation because your beginning years in the profession is all about
learning and gaining experiences. Another speaker who failed not once but twice told
us to be Courageous, Patient, and Aspiring to achieve our goals.

The very unexpected thing that happened was the surprised appearance of
Jollibee that made us all excited and happy. There were also prizes to be won, and
the funny thing was, all of the winners were from our school, it made me feel bad for
other schools, though. Lastly, the closing remarks was given by Atty. Maria Lina F.
Baura, CPA who also encouraged us to proceed Law. The giving of certificates was
done shortly after that. Overall, it was fun, informative, and very inspirational to us
aspiring future CPAs.
