Hooper’s Chemistry Syllabus

Expectations and Classroom Procedures

Class Website: www.hooperslab.weebly.com

Course Overview:
 Chemistry provides opportunities for students to develop and communicate an understanding of
structure, physical and chemical properties, and chemical change.
 Concepts include properties of matter, measurement applied to mathematical operations, atomic
theory, bonding, equations and reactions, stoichiometry, thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium,
oxidation-reduction
 Laboratory activities, research, the use of technology, and the effective communication of results
through various methods are integral components of this course.
 Pre-requisite: Algebra 1. Students should have already taken and passed Algebra 1 to be
enrolled in Chemistry. Strong math skills are required to do well in chemistry.

Ms. Hooper’s KEY TO CHEMISTRY SUCCESS

IT’S VERY SIMPLE…LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES AND DON’T GIVE UP
Chemistry is one of the hardest courses a student can take.

Students fail for 3 reasons:

1. Complain about work instead of doing it
2. Don’t get help
3. Give up and stop trying

As long as you put in a GENUINE EFFORT and FACE the challenge YOU WILL
PASS!

Earning THE GRADE

Chemistry is NOT easy, it is difficult course, but you have the ability to learn the material IF YOU DO THE
WORK. Grades and points are not given in this class, but they are earned. I will assist and guide you in all the
ways I can, but ultimately it is up to you put forth the effort to earn the grade you desire in this course.

Homework (HW) – Flipped Classroom

You MUST do homework to do well in this class not just for earning points, but to truly understand and
master the material. Student should expect homework to be assigned EVERY DAY. Homework should be seen
as practice and preparation for the quizzes and tests, not optional extra work.
*Flipped Classroom – The flipped classroom has students watch lecture videos at home, allowing more time
in class for individual help, practice, experiments, and activities. Students will require a computer with internet
access.
Optional sources – My class laptops, school library, public library, phone or device with access, etc.
See more about flipped classroom on my website – www.hooperslab.weebly.com.
*Weekly Assignment Sheets – will be given every Monday and will contain a schedule of both classwork and
homework. Students are expected read this and know what is expected for the week and to show this to their
parents/guardians so they are aware of class content.
YOU WILL NOT SUCCEED IF YOU DO NOT COMPLETE HOMEWORK.

Tests and Quizzes

Quizzes will be given throughout the course. Quizzes will either be announced or not, it is up to the
student to be up to date on the material and assignments.
**If a student misses a test or quiz it is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements in order to make
up the test within a reasonable amount of time.

Make up Work/Missing Work/Late Work (Refer to Student Handbook for more details)
If a student has fallen behind in class or missed any work it is their responsibility to set a time to talk
to me BEFORE OR AFTER SCHOOL to get caught up or make up assignments. The middle of class is NOT
a time to ask to make up work as I already have our lesson planned for the day and have to stay on task. You
are encouraged to make plans with me to stay before or after school to get that in order. Make up work is
always located in the same location in the class room, all students have open access. It can also be looked up
and viewed on the homework tab on the school website.
If a student has missed class they should refer to the weekly assignment sheet to see what they
missed, students are given 5 days to complete the assignment or it will not be accepted.
Students are encouraged to turn in late work. However, late work will be marked down as follows:
LATE PENALTIES: 1 day: -20% 2 days: -40% 3-5 days: -50%

2
6+ days: assignments are no longer accepted.
ChemBinder
This will be key in your organization and success in this class. Each student will need a 3 ring
binder or a designated section in a large binder that a regular piece of 8.5”x 11” copy paper can fit and it will
serve as their notebook. This binder/section will be for chemistry and chemistry ONLY and will be graded
throughout the year for content, cleanliness, and organization.

Cheating
There will be 0 tolerance policy on cheating. If a student is caught copying work from another (example:
homework, bellwork, test) they will receive an automatic 0 on that assignment, an administrator and the parent
will be notified.

Bellwork/Exit Tickets
The first 3-4 minutes of every class with have a bellwork posted for students to immediately get started
on and complete. Exit Tickets will be given the last 3-4 minutes of class. They will consist of a question or
activity that is related to the topics currently being done in class. I will check bellwork at the end of every week.
I DO NOT give make up work for bellwork so make sure every day you come in and get it done.

If you have an EXCUSED absence or tardy describe in 3 sentences what you missed (ask a classmate) and
what you will do to make sure you understand it fully, and what might you struggle with later.

Informal Presentation Students are required to complete TWO informal presentations every 9 weeks.
This involves standing and sharing the answer to the day’s bellwork to the class.

Lab Expectations
It is extremely important that students are prepared and safe during lab experiments. Please read and
sign the attached safety contract. Students must have this contract signed and turned in to participate in lab. If
students demonstrate improper behavior in lab the teacher will remove them from lab, they will receive a
zero, and if applicable will be responsible for cost of damaged equipment.

Students who do not demonstrate proper behavior may be prohibited from entering/participating in lab
activities.
