Entry Level Assessment

Students will be creating flashcards through Quizlet and creating their own set of

flashcards with given source types and labeling each one as either “primary” or “secondary”.

After labeling each one, on the same side, they will write a short explanation as why they chose

to label as primary or secondary. Using Quizlet is free and easy to access and create sets of

flashcards for students to use.

To grade the assessment, each flash card is worth 1 point. They get .5 points if it is set up

correctly and another .5 points if their explanation is in full sentences and is grammatically

correct. The total of the assessment is 10 points. This is to see where they are at in terms of

having any background knowledge on sources and to practice creating arguments to support their

choices and knowledge, that is why the points are not set around whether or not they are correct

in the labeling part of the assignment.

To grade, the students must send me the link through a discussion forum by a specific

time and date. In class, I will go over the correct answers with them and have the students open

their own sets so they can follow along and allow them to correct their sets as well for future

practice and reference.

Summative Assessments

1. Starting an Essay with a Graphic Organizer

For this assignment, students will brainstorm and set up the structure of the main body

paragraphs for an essay with a chart. In this assignment they will be using a tree chart. Here is an

example of the chart and the set up for this assignment.

1. The Prompt will be given to the students.

2. They will write their own Thesis Statement.

3. They will write three Topic Sentences to start their main body paragraphs with each one

pertaining to one primary source and two secondary sources.

4. For each of the topic sentences, use one given source to support the topic.

5. With each source, cite it in MLA format (the format will be given to them) as they would

in a works cited page.

This assignment is to start the structure, creating thesis statements, and topic sentences for

the essay. As well as differentiating between primary and secondary sources. This will also give

them practice of creating citations for sources for a works cited page.

 They will be using Gliffy to create the tree chart, https://www.gliffy.com/ , and have

parental involvement to help make an account.

 This is to revisit a previous assignment and get them into the practice of working on

the structure of an essay and finding the sources to support their thesis statement

ahead of time, before the deadline of the essay.

This would be first turned in through a discussion forum so I may look through it and

start on making corrections to guide them to a better path of writing the essays and knowing

what to tell them that they need to fix, what is and is not working, and whether or not the

citations need to be fixed as well. This will be told to them individually in class during an in-

class assignment so they can get advice and help in person, also so the students can ask any

questions about the assignment as well.

The Prompt

In Romeo and Juliet, how does Shakespeare portray independence through the actions of Romeo

and/or Juliet?

2. Writing an essay

Based off the previous assignment with the graphic organizer, students will be writing a 5-

paragraph essay as a take home. The prompt will have already be given to them, as well as the

citation format for sources ahead of time through the previous assignment. The essay is to show

how well they can find their own sources, correctly cite and quote from it, and use the sources

effectively in their essay. This assessment is important since it is the first of many writing

assignments where they will have to develop the skills to find the sources, create the arguments

to support their thesis statements, and use the sources to their advantage to showcase how well

they can support their arguments. As well as properly citing the sources and creating their own

citation page.
