COUNCIL OVERVIEW OF
ASIA YOUTH INTERNATIONAL MODEL UNITED NATIONS
(AYIMUN) 2018
For this MUN, the committee will provide delegates 7 committee with one interesting topic
in each committee that will be discussed on the conference.

WHO

1 Topic: Urgent Action for Children with Malnutrition in Under Developing Countries

WHO’s Constitution came into force on 7 April 1948 known as World Health Day. Discover
more about WHO history through archives, seminars, public health posters and campaigns.
More than 7000 people from more than 150 countries work for the Organization in over 150
WHO country offices, 6 regional offices, at the Global Service Centre in Malaysia and at the
headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. In line with the mission to provide global leadership
in public health, WHO employs health specialists, medical doctors, scientists, epidemiologists
and also people with expertise in administration and finance, information systems,
economics, health statistics as well as emergency preparedness and response.
WHO’s priority in the area of health systems is moving towards universal health coverage,
eight out of 10 of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. The consequences
of these diseases reach beyond the health sector and solutions require more than a system
that prevents and treats disease. Promoting good health through the life-course cuts across
allwork done by WHO, and takes into account the need to address environment risks and
social determinants of health, as well as gender, equity and human rights.
2
3 Topic : Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emmision from Ships

In 1948 an international conference in Geneva adopted a convention formally establishing IMO

(the original name was the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization, or IMCO, but
the name was changed in 1982 to IMO). The IMO Convention entered into force in 1958 and the
new Organization met for the first time the following year. The purposes of the Organization, as
summarized by Article 1(a) of the Convention, are "to provide machinery for cooperation among
Governments in the field of governmental regulation and practices relating to technical matters
of all kinds affecting shipping engaged in international trade; to encourage and facilitate the
general adoption of the highest practicable standards in matters concerning maritime safety,
efficiency of navigation and prevention and control of marine pollution from ships".
As a specialized agency of the United Nations, IMO is the global standard-setting authority for
the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping. Its main role is
to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair and effective, universally
adopted and universally implemented. In other words, its role is to create a level playing-field
so that ship operators cannot address their financial issues by simply cutting corners and
compromising on safety, security and environmental performance. This approach also encourages
innovation and efficiency. Shipping is a truly international industry, and it can only operate
effectively if the regulations and standards are themselves agreed, adopted and implemented
on an international basis. And IMO is the forum at which this process takes place. IMO measures
cover all aspects of international shipping – including ship design, construction, equipment,
manning, operation and disposal – to ensure that this vital sector for remains safe, environmentally
sound, energy efficient and secure.
