MEXICO CITY — Cuba’s former dictator Fidel Castro died Friday night, his younger brother and successor Raúl
Castro announced Friday.

The Cuban president, who took over from his brother in 2008, said that his brother’s ashes would be carried to
Santiago de Cuba province, a route that recalls, in reverse, Castro´s march to victory in 1958. Raúl Castro closed
his remarks with Cuba’s revolutionary slogan: Hasta la Victoria Siempre!

Several foreign leaders offered condolences, with leaders of both Russia and China offering fulsome sympathy.
But many statements were tempered as the world took stock of a man who rose to fame through revolution,
becoming a fiery rival to the United States during the cold war. He overthrew one dictator only to become the
region’s longest serving strongman, at 49 years.

Castro’s last public appearance was in August to celebrate his 90th birthday. Cubans were never told what ailed
their former leader, and it took hours for news of his death to spread across Havana, where the streets were
silent.

The scenes were more jubilant among Cubans who fled Castro’s regimen. Cuban-Americans in Miami took to the
streets, waving Cuban and American flags.

“Its about time that God-damned bastard died,” a bald man wearing a blue pullover told Channel 23, a Miami
Spanish-language broadcaster.

Fidel Castro was born in 1916 in Biran on the island’s wild eastern tip, the illegitimate son of a former Spanish
soldier who had become a rich landowner, and his maid. Nicknamed the “guerrilla prince,” he animated millions
in Cuba with his promises of social justice and economic progress, only to bankrupt the island.

Former FBI Director Jimmy Comey said in a farewell note to colleagues he had “long believed” a president could
fire an FBI director “for any reason, or for no reason at all,” in his first remarks to be made public since he was
fired.

Comey learned of his firing from a television news broadcast while at a law-enforcement event in Los Angeles.
Comey didn’t receive a courtesy call from the White House, and he initially thought it was part of an elaborate
joke, according to a close associate. The White House said they were following protocol in delivering the
dismissal letter to his Washington office.

His dismissal has sent morale at the FBI plummeting, creating the most divisive atmosphere since J. Edgar
Hoover was director. Agents viewed the firing as a bellwether of President Donald Trump’s willingness to work
with the investigation into Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Trump initially said he fired Comey after receiving a 3-page memo from Deputy Attorney General Rod
Rosenstein, in which he said Comey’s actions regarding Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s email
use had led the FBI to lose the public’s trust.

But two days later, Trump said he was going to fire Comey irregardless of Rosenstine’s recommendation.

The firing highlighted the fraught position of FBI directors, who often must run a gauntlet of conducting
impartial investigations amid political storms.

In Comey’s farewell letter, he said he hoped those at the FBI wouldn’t spend time on the decision or the way it
was executed.” He also said he was disinterested in doing so himself.

“It is done, and I will be fine,” Comey said.
