El verbo en presente simple queda igual para I, you y they: I study (‘Yo estudio’), You study
(‘Tú estudias’ / ‘Vosotros estudiáis’), They study (‘Ellos estudian’).
I start work every day at 8 am.
The actors start the play on time.
The students study at school every day.
I study the instructions every time I buy a
¿No?
verbo “to speak” (hablar).
Ellos hablan con ella cada semana. They speak to her every week.
23
ESCUELA DE EDUCACIÓN SUPERIOR TÉCNICO INGLÉS II
PROFESIONAL DE LA POLICÍA NACIONAL DEL PERÚ
Aquí decimos very well y no very good porque esta expresión describe una acción.
Nunca digas I studying English.
II. Use the simple present to talk about: facts, habits, opinion or schedules.
1. to give your opinion - I like ice cream. I don't like spicy food.
2. to talk about schedules - The library opens at eight am. It doesn't open at 7.
3. to talk about daily habits - Sara eats a donut for breakfast every day. She doesn't
eat cereal.
4. to give facts - The earth circles the sun. The moon doesn't circle the sun.
**note - It's not always easy to decide which use you see. In many cases, there are two
or more usages present.

La teoría
Fíjate en estas frases:
Voy donde él va. I go where he goes.
Tú compras lo que ella compra. You buy what she buys.
Los alumnos estudian cuando el profesor The students study when the teacher
estudia. studies.
forma habitual. Con he, she y it casi siempre lleva una simple “s” al final del verbo (algunos
verbos exigen una “es”, como to go o to do). Go se convierte
en goes, buy en buys, study en studies, etc.
La práctica
Vamos primero con he
Él corre todos los días. He runs every day.
Él nada por las tardes. He swims in the afternoon.
Él duerme ocho horas cada noche. He sleeps eight hours every night.
The doll says “hello” when she holds it.

He go to bed at ten es un error grave.
He goes to bed at ten.

If you look at the examples above you will notice that the answer uses the first verb in the
question (even if it is an auxiliary verb). This is a common characteristic of short answers in
English. Contrast that to long answers to each of those questions:
You will notice that long answers often sound repetitive. A long answer to one of these
questions would be considered very formal in English, and in most cases, unnecessary.
Remember, when you are accepting or refusing something to say 'yes, please' or 'no, thank
you'. It is much more common to give short answers to questions like these:

I. Adverbs of frecuency
* Some people pronounce the 'T' in often but many others do not.
These are also known as Adverbs of INDEFINITE frequency as the exact frequency is not
defined.
When we use an auxiliary verb (have, will, must, might, could, would, can, etc.), the
adverb is placed between the auxiliary and the main verb. This is also true for to be.
