1. The transfer functions of a feedback controlled process are given below.

2( s  1) 0.16 1
G p (s)  Gv ( s )  Gm ( s ) 
(12 s  1)(3.2 s  1) 0. 8 s  1 1.2 s  1

a. Determine with appropriate justification whether the process is stable without

controller.
[6 marks]

b. Determine the values of Kc for which the closed loop system will be stable with
proportional controller.
[18 marks]

c. Determine the controller setting for a PID controller with Tyres-Luyben method
given in the Appendix.
[18 marks]

d. If you use a proportional controller with Zeigler-Nichols setting what will be the final
value of the output and the offset if a unit step change in set-point is introduced.
Sketch the response.
[8 marks]

2. The schematic diagram of a blending tank is shown FIGURE 1. The tank is used to
supply a process stream at 62oC. At steady state, the temperature of Stream-1 is 85 oC.
It is a safety requirement that in the absence of instrument air the hot stream should be
closed.

FIGURE 1
a. Propose a feedback control structure using schematic diagram with appropriate
P & ID notation to maintain the outlet temperature at 62 oC.
[10 marks]

b. For the control structure in part (a) determine the valve action and controller
action.
[15 marks]
c. If you use a temperature transmitter with a range of -15 oC to 250oC and a standard
4mA to 20mA output what will be the gain the transmitter.
[10 marks]

d. For the transmitter in part (a), determine the current in mA if the measured
temperature is 55 oC.
[15 marks]
