Science Exp 1 Day 1

March 14, 2018

Objectives
- Students can investigate and experimenting all that air can do.
- Students can answer the questions What can air do?

Anticipatory Set
- Today we are going to investigate the object in this bag. Lets see what is inside.
Display one by one what is in the bag and identify each one.
- Once everything is removed from the bag ask Is their anything else in the bag?
- Introduce that their is some air in the bag, compare this one to one that is
completely flat ask how can you tell when air is in the bag or another container?
- Today you are going to be scientists and answer the questions What can air do?
Write on board for students to reread.

Procedures
- Explain that they will go back to their seats and start to explore the many
different things air can do (the students will be split between who will be at their
desks and who will spread out between the carpet and the table).
- Go over safety rules:
- It is ok to blow through the star, but don’t use the straw to blow on your
neighbor
- Use the balloon pump to inflate the balloon. Don’t put a balloon in your
mouth. The only thing you can put in your mouth is your own straw.
- DO NOT release the balloon in the classroom
- You will have 10 min to explore and experiment
- Get students attention and explain that they will leave the plastic-foam balls and
feathers out of the bag, they can close up what they have left in the bag and take
it home. As you make your way back to your desk you will bring you foam ball
and feather to the back table.
Closure
- Discuss what things they found while doing the experiment,
- What did you discover during your time experimenting?
- Air can move things from place to place, air can fill up a plastic bag and not
be smashed flat without letting the air out first.
- You can feel it when you blow through a straw onto the back of you hand.
- Write on the board: Air is a form of matter. Their are three different kinds: solids,
liquids, and gases. Air is an invisible mixture of gases.
- Discuss what matter means, Add matter to a poster that will hold all vocal words
throughout the unit. Matter: solids, liquids, and gases or anything that takes up
space.

Assessment
- Students will then receive their science packets and will record what they learned
that day with a picture and description.
- On the first page of your packet you are going to draw anything that you found
during your time experimenting as well as write about make sure it is nice and
descriptive so you can look back at it and know exactly what you did.
- This will be used as an informal assessment for that day.
