7. ‘Start-up India, Stand-up India’ scheme:


Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled the ‘Start-up India, Stand-up India’ action
plan in New Delhi to boost startup ventures in the country. The main aim of action plan
is to give impetus to innovation and encourage the talent among young people and
remove onerous government regulations and red tape.
Key features Start-up India, Stand-up India action plan
Start-up profits to be tax-free for 3 years and also no labour inspections for 3 years of
launch of the venture.
Compliance regime based on self-certification for labour and environmental laws.
Easy exit policy for start-ups with 90 days.
Tax exemption to be provided on capital gains if money is invested in another start up.
Government to create Rs. 10,000 crore corpus fund for development and growth of
innovation driven enterprises. It will be Rs. 2500 crore a year for four years.
8.The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 came into force 15
January 2016. In this regard, Union Ministry of Woman and Child Development has issued
orders for enforceable of Act. The Act had received President Pranab Mukherjee’s assent on
December 31, 2015 after it was passed by the Parliament.

Key features of Act:


Aims at ensuring protection, proper care, development and social reintegration of
children in difficult circumstances by adopting a child-friendly approach.
Permits trying of juveniles between the ages of 16 and 18 years as adults for heinous
offences.

9. The Union Cabinet has approved Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, a new crop
insurance scheme to boost farming sector in the country. It is farmers’ welfare scheme that
aims to reduce the premium burden on farmers and ensure early settlement of crop
assurance claim for the full insured sum.

Highlights of Scheme:
Uniform premium: Farmers will pay uniform premium of 2 per cent for all Kharif crops
and 1.5 percent for all Rabi crops. In case of annual horticultural and commercial crops,
farmers will pay 5 per cent premium. These premium rates are very low. Government
will pay balance premium to provide full insured amount to the farmers against crop
loss on account of natural calamities.

10. The Union Cabinet has approved the Stand up India Scheme to promote
entrepreneurship among Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST) and Women
entrepreneurs. Decision in this regard was taken by Union Cabinet meeting chaired by
the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

The Scheme seeks to facilitate at least two such projects on an average one for each
category of entrepreneur per bank branch. The Stand-up India is component of Start-up
India, Stand up India slogan anchored by Department of Financial Services (DFS) to
encourage Greenfield enterprises by Women and SC/ST entrepreneurs.

Features of Stand Up India Scheme- It will refinance window through Small Industries
Development Bank of India (SIDBI) with an initial amount 10,000 crore rupees.

11. Justice RM Lodha Committee has submitted its report to the Supreme Court suggesting
reforms in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The committee was appointed
by the SC in 2014 to make recommendations to the BCCI in order to prevent frauds and
conflict of interest in cricket administration.
Major Recommendations Committee:
Governing Bodies: They should be separate for Indian Premier League (IPL) and BCCI,
with limited autonomy for the IPL Governing Council.
BCCI office-bearer: No Minister or government servant should become a BCCI office-
bearer.

1. Htin Kyaw sworn in as the first elected civilian (non-military) President of
Myanmar after 53 years of military rule. Myanmar’s Army was in power since
1962 coup. He belongs to National League for Democracy (NLD) Party and
succeeds Thein Sein, who had stepped down after end of five years of army-
backed rule.

2. Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) HL Dattu took charge as the Chairman of the
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). With this, he becomes the seventh
Chairman of the NHRC, highest government institution protecting human rights
of citizens.

3. The Telecom Commission has approved the number 112 as the single emergency
number for India, similar to 911 of United States (US) and 999 of United Kingdom
(UK).

4. The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved


Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) for providing free of cost LPG (cooking
gas) connections to women from BPL Households. This scheme will be
implemented by Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. It will be for the
first time ministry will be implementing a welfare scheme.

5. Internet pioneer and e-mail inventor Raymond Tomlinson passed away in


Washington, United States. He was 74 years old.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in May
2016 signed a series of twelve agreements in Tehran.
The most important of these 12 agreements is the trilateral transit agreement between
India, Iran and Afghanistan. In the deal, India offered to develop the Port of Chabahar in

1. UNESCO World Heritage Sites - New Inscriptions
The UNESCO recently included 21 sites in its World Heritage Site list of which 12
are cultural sites, 6 are natural sites and 3 are mixed sites. of the 21 sites 3 sites
are in India.
• Nalanda Mahavihara, Bihar

It comprises the archaeological remains of a monastic and scholastic institution


dating from the 3rd century BCE to the 13th century CE. It includes stupas,
shrines, viharas (residential and educational buildings) and important art works
in stucco, stone and metal.

5. India’s first Green Rail Corridor launched in Tamil Nadu


the India’s first Green Rail Corridor was inaugurated on the 114-km long Rameswaram-

Suresh Prabhu through video-conferencing from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Key Facts The

6. Kerala Government launches first ever Water Metro project in the country
Kerala Government has launched Kochi Water Metro project, the first ever Water Metro
project in the country. It was launched by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at
Kochi. The project aims to provide water connectivity to people living between islands in
the Kochi agglomeration area and the city.

7. Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2016.

The Bill seeks to amend the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 to
widen the scope of the law against child labour and stricter punishments for violations.
1. Prohibition of employment of children below 14 years in all
occupations or processes except where child helps his family.
2. Addition of a new category of persons called “adolescent”. They
are person between 14 and 18 years of age.

8. Madhya Pradesh became the first state in India to have ‘Happiness Department’ that
will work as knowledge resource centre on the subject of happiness on the lines of
Bhutan. Decision to set up Happiness Department was taken by the state cabinet
meeting presided by chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan.

11. HDFC becomes first Indian Company to issue masala bonds


The Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) has become the first Indian
company to issue rupee-denominated bonds “masala bonds” on London Stock Exchange
(LSE). The bond will help HDFC, India’s biggest mortgage lender (home finance
company) to diversify its borrowing profile and access global investors.
