Reading your operator's manual will help you and others
avoid personal injury or damage to the machine.
Information given in this manual will provide the operator
with the safest and most effective use of the machine.
Knowing how to operate this machine safely and correctly
will allow you to train others who may operate this machine.
This manual and safety signs on your machine may also be
available in other languages (see your John Deere dealer
to order).
Sections in your operator's manual are placed in a specific
order to help you understand all the safety messages and
learn the controls so you can operate this machine safely.
You can also use this manual to answer any specific
operating or servicing questions. A convenient index
located at the end of this book will help you to find needed
information quickly.
The machine shown in this manual may differ slightly from
your machine, but will be similar enough to help you
understand our instructions.
RIGHT-HAND and LEFT-HAND sides are determined by
facing in the direction the machine will travel when going
forward. When you see a broken line arrow(------>), the
item referred to is hidden frorn view.
Before delivering this machine, your dealer performed a
predelivery inspection to ensure best performance.

Checking Mowing Area


• Rotating blades can cut off arms and legs.
• Keep hands, feet and clothing away from mower deck
when engine is running.
• Be alert at all times, drive forward carefully. People,
especially children can move quickly into the mowing area
before you know it.
• Before backing up, shut off PTO and look down and
behind the machine carefully, especially for children.
• Do not mow in reverse.
• Shut off blades when you are not mowing.

attachment bolts.
• Securely support any machine elements that must be
raised for service work.
• Never run engine unless park brake is locked.
• Keep all parts in good condition and properly installed.
Fix damage immediately. Replace worn or broken parts.
Replace all worn or damaged safety and instruction decals.
• To prevent fires, remove any buildup of grease, oil, or
debris from the machine, especially the engine
compartment.
• Charge batteries in an open, well-ventilated area, away
from sparks. Unplug battery charger before connecting or
disconnecting from the battery. Use insulated tools.
• Do not modify machine or safety devices. Unauthorized
modifications may impair its function and safety.
• Do not wear radio or music headphones while servicing
the machine. Safe service requires your full attention.

installed on tractor shaft.

3. Raise mower lift arms as high as they will go by pulling


hydraulic lever (B) rearward.
4. Turn front wheels to the left.
5. Adjust the mower deck depth stop to the lowest cut
height setting.
6. Stop the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop.
7. Adjust front caster wheel to lowest cut height position.

until collar locks in place.

1. Stop tractor on a hard, level surface, such as a cement
floor.
2. Lock the park brake.

4. Adjust the mower deck depth stop to the lowest cut
height setting.
5. Turn front wheels to the left.
6. Stop the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop.
7. Adjust front caster wheel to lowest cut height position.

14.Pull each spring loaded J-pin (K) out of each mower


bracket (L) and each tractor lift arm (M).
15.Start the engine.
16.Lock lift arms in completely raised position:
a. Raise lift arms as high as they will go.
b. Turn depth control knob clockwise until it is tight.
Close knob.
17.Stop the engine.
18. Push mower toward front tires.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! To prevent damage to


driveline, rest driveline on mower deck when sliding
mower deck from under tractor.

19.Remove driveline (M) from tractor shaft by pulling collar


on locking coupler (N) back and pulling shaft from splines.
20.Turn front caster wheel so it rolls toward right side of
tractor.
21.Roll mower deck out from right side of tractor.

Lowering and Raising Mower
NOTE: Only tractors equipped with the optional front
hitch or loader will be equipped with hydraulic valve.

2. Move throttle lever (A) to full engine speed position.


3. Lower mower to the ground.
4. Engage the PTO by pulling knob (B) up.

NOTE: Upward travel of tractor rear lift arms is limited
by the following stops:
• J-pins (A) (early model tractors -1995 or prior)
• lock bolts (late model tractors- 1996 and up).
Maximum cut height is achieved when one or both
J-pins or lock bolts are forced to contact the tractor
frame by movement of the rear lift arm.

7. Remove spring locking pin (B) and drilled pin (C) from
each tractor lift arm.
8. Turn each yoke (D) clockwise to raise both sides of
mower equally.
9. Attach yokes to tractor lift arms with drilled pins and
spring locking pins.
1O.Start engine.
11.Raise mower to maximum cutting height.
12.Check to see if rear tractor lift arm forces stops to
contact tractor frame:
• If stops do contact the tractor frame, you need not go
any further.
• If stops do not contact the tractor frame, repeat steps
4-8.
13.Check mower level when above is completed:
• Tractors with Single Tie Rods - Complete "Front-
To-Rear" adjustment first, then "Side-to-Side".
• Tractors with Double Tie Rods - Complete "Side-
to-Side" adjustment first, then "Front To Rear''.

9. Attach yoke to tractor lift arm with drilled pin and spring
locking pin. 4. Install and tighten hardware to 60 N•m (45 lb-ft).

A CAUTION: Avoid injury! Do not operate mower


without discharge chute securely fastened in
place or without complete MCS.

10.Lower discharge chute and secure with original


hardware. Tighten hardware to 40 N•m.(30 lb-ft).

using a POWERFLOW™ and bagger; rear gauge
wheels can be used to support the deck by setting

The front wheels should always be kept off the ground
to minimize scuffing.

1. Remove quick-lock pin (A).


2. Remove spring tension bracket (B).
NOTE: Each spacer is equivalent to 12.7 mm (112 in.).
3. Remove correct amount of spacers (C) for desired
cutting height. (Refer to decal located on mower deck.)
4. Remove front caster wheel from mower deck arm.

1. Remove spring locking ring (A) from drilled pin (B).


2. Remove drilled pin and move rear gauge wheel to
desired cutting height. (Refer to the decal located on
mower deck.)
3. Install drilled pin (B) and spring locking ring (A).
NOTE: Refer to POWERFLOW operator's manual for
proper gauge wheel adjustment, when using
POWERFLOW.

4. Lower mower to the depth stop and make final check of
cutting height adjustment.
5. Adjust gauge wheels.

Transporting The Mower


Do not tow tractor and mower.
Use a heavy-duty trailer to transport your tractor and
mower.
Lower mower to trailer deck.
Engage park brake.
Make sure trailer has all the necessary lights and signs
required by local, state, provincial , or federal laws.
Fasten the tractor and mower to the trailer with straps,

SERVICE
Grease Lubricating Driveline

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Use recommended


John Deere greases to avoid component failure and
premature wear.
The recommended John Deere greases are effective
within an average air temperature range of -29 to 135
degrees C (-20 to 275 degrees F).
If operating outside that temperature range, contact
your Servicing dealer for a special-use grease.

The following greases are preferred:


• John Deere Multi-Purpose SD Polyurea Grease
• John Deere Multi-Purpose HD Lithium Complex Grease
Lubricate three points (A) with John Deere EP grease, or
If not using any of the preferred greases, be sure to use a an equivalent.
general all-purpose grease with an NLGI grade No.2 rating.
Wet or high speed conditions may require use of a special-

Lubricating Rear Gauge Wheels

Gear Oil
Use oil viscosity based on the expected air temperature
range during the period between oil changes.
John Deere GL-5 Gear Lubricant is recommended.
Other oils may be used if they meet one or more of the
following:
• API Service Classification GL-5.
• Military Specification MIL-L-21 05D.
• Military Specification MIL-L-21 05C.
• Military Specification MIL-L-21 058.
Lubricate each rear gauge wheel point (A) with John
Oils meeting Military Specification MIL-L-10324A may be Deere EP grease, or an equivalent.

Adjusting Idler Arm Stop

A CAUTION: Avoid injury! Do not operate mower


without belt shields in place.

1. Remove right belt shield.

2. Loosen nut (A) on idler stop. 3. Clean top of the mower deck and the area around all of
the sheaves (A) of debris.
3. Push idler stop against idler arm (B).
4. Loosen nut on idler arm stop, and slide idler arm stop

Checking/Adding Gearbox Oil

5. Roll belt off of left-hand pulley (B).

2. Oil level should be at the bottom edge of the check plug

NOTE: Gearbox capacity is 135 ml (4.6 oz.).
3. If oil level is low, add John Deere GL-5 Gear Lubricant
as needed.
4. Install check plug (A).

6. Remove four nuts (C).

Installing Mower Deck Belt

4. Position each belt shield under stops (B) and fasten with
nut and washer (C).
5. Tighten nuts.
6. Install mower on tractor.

mower deck.

1. Lower mower. Measure distance between blade tip and


flat ground surface.
3. Install four nuts (A) and tighten nuts to 50 N•M (37 lb-ft). 2. Turn blade 180 degrees. Measure distance between
other blade tip and flat ground surface.
3. If the distance between the two measurements is more
than 3 mm (1/8 in.), loosen blade bolt, rotate blade 90
degrees (1/4 turn) and tighten blade bolt.
4. Repeat Steps 1 and 2. If distance between the two
measurements is still more than 3 mm (1/8 in.) , install new
blade.

Removing and Installing Mower Blades

5. If blade is dull, have it sharpened and balanced.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Make sure cupped side

6. If blade is damaged, install new blade, and fasten with


washer, and bolt.
7. Tighten bolt to 112 N•m (83 lb-ft).

1. Clean blade.
2. Put blade on nail in vise or on vertical wall stud.
3. Turn blade to horizontal position.
4. If blade is not balanced, heavy end of blade will drop.

STORAGE
Storing Mower
1. Remove mower from tractor. (If tractor is to be stored,
keep mower on tractor and refer to Storing Machine in your
Tractor's Operator Manual.)
2. Clean underside of mower with water pressure and
scraper.
3. Inspect blades:
• Have dull blades sharpened and balanced.
• Replace damaged blades.
4. Remove belt shields and clean top of deck and the area
around all of the sheaves.
5. Check condition of belt. If necessary, get a new belt. Do
not install new belt until you remove mower from storage.
6. Repair or replace any worn or damaged parts.
7. Apply touch-up paint where needed to prevent rust.
8. Lubricate grease points.
9. Release belt tension.
1O.lnstall belt shields.
11.Store mower in a clean, dry place.
12.Put a waterproof cover over mower, if you store the
mower outside.

Identify Parts

2. Remove each rear wheel (A) by removing spring locking


ring (B) and drilled pin (C) .
NOTE: For ease of installing mower on tractor, put rear
gauge wheels in the sideways position.

3. Turn each rear gauge wheel (A) 180 degrees and install
back on mower in the sideways position.
4. Install drilled pin (C) and spring locking ring (B)
(removed above) in lowest position in gauge wheel arm.
