1.2 Quality Specification,

Air
Alfa Laval ref. 553407, rev. 5

The supply of compressed air to separator discharge system, valve

actuators, positioners, instruments etc. must be of such a quality that
satisfactory function is ensured for a reasonable time.
To this end three conditions must be fulfilled:
1 Dirt in the form of solid particles down to a size below 10 micron (0,01
mm) must be removed from the air. This is preferably done by means of
special filters or reducing valves provided with filters.
2 Oil is always transferred to the compressed air from oil-lubricated
compressors and must be removed to the highest possible degree. It
constitutes a serious contamination, which it is difficult to remove from
the instruments. Special filters or oil separators must, therefore, be
provided before the instruments. In small plants, oil-free compressors
can be used as an alternative.
3 In the compressed-air system a condensation takes place at various
rates, depending on the moisture content at the air inlet, the
temperature before and after the compressor, partially lower
temperature in any cold zone passed by the pipe (outdoor, cellar etc.)
and the like.
4 The air must thus be dried with regard to the lowest temperature
existing after the drying device, so that condensate in the instruments
is avoided. Note that the air will also be cooled through expansion after
passing constrictions and nozzles in the instruments, with
condensation as a result. In view of the above, the following must be
observed:
5 At the inlet to an instrument, the dew point of the compressed air should
lie at least 10 °C below the lowest ambient temperature. This is usually
obtained by using an absorption drier of suitable capacity. If the air
contains much water, provide a primary separator before the filter.
Air filters should be placed so as to be easily surveyable and accessible in
order to facilitate daily condition checks, and exchange of the filter
cartridge.

NOTE

Alfa Laval accepts no liability for consequences

arising from unsatisfactorily purified compressed air
supplied by the customer.

1.3 Quality Specification,

Operating Water
Alfa Laval ref. 553406, rev. 9

Operating water is used in the separator for several different functions: e.g. to
operate the discharge mechanism, to lubricate and cool mechanical seals.
Poor quality of the operating water may with time cause erosion, corrosion and/or
operating problem in the separator and must therefore be treated to meet certain
demands.

The following requirements are of importance:

1 Turbidity-free water, solids content <0,001% by volume.
Deposits must not be allowed to form in certain areas in the separator.
Max particle size 50 μm.
2 Total hardness less than 180 mg CaCO3 per litre, which corresponds to 10 °dH or
12,5 °E.
Hard water may with time form deposits in the operating mechanism. The
precipitation rate is accelerated with increased operating temperature and low
discharge frequency. These effects become more severe the harder the water is.
3 Chloride content max 100 ppm NaCl (equivalent to 60 mg Cl/l).
Chloride ions contribute to corrosion on the separator surfaces in contact with
the operating water, including the spindle. Corrosion is a process that is
accelerated by increased separating temperature, low pH, and high chloride ion
concentration.
A chloride concentration above 60 mg/l is not recommended.
4 pH>6
Increased acidity (lower pH) increases the risk for corrosion; this is accelerated
by increased temperature and high chloride ion content.

NOTE

Alfa Laval accepts no liability for consequences

arising from unsatisfactorily purified operating water
supplied by the customer.

PREBILGE BILGE WATER CLEANING SYSTEM INSTALLATION SYSTEM REFERENCE 1 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

1.4 Feed pump installation

Suggestions to avoid cavitation:

• Keep pressure drop in the inlet line to a
minimum i.e. keep length of suction line as
short as possible. (The pump shall be
installed as close as possible to the bilge
water tank.) Keep the diameter as large as
possible, and keep the use of pipe fittings
such as bends, valves, strainers etc. to a
minimum.
• Maintain a static head as high as possible.
• Reduced fluid temperature. Caution is needed
as this may have the effect of increasing fluid
viscosity, thereby increasing the pressure
drop.

NOTE

If a suction strainer is installed before the feed pump,

the mesh size should not be less than 3 mm in order
to avoid unnecessary pressure drop.

Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH)

The total head, capacity, power and efficiency
requirements, as well as the conditions at the
pump inlet, are critical. The system on the inlet
side of the pump must allow a smooth flow of
fluid to enter the pump at a sufficiently high
pressure to avoid cavitation. This is called the
Net Positive Suction Head, generally
abbreviated NPSH.
Pump manufacturers supply data about the net
positive suction head required by their pumps
(NPSHr) for satisfactory operation. When
selecting a pump it is critical that the net
positive suction head available (NPSHa) in the
system is greater than the Net Positive Suction
Head required by the pump.
NPSHa is also referred to as N.I.P.A. (Net Inlet
Pressure Available) and NPSHr is also referred
to as N.I.P.R. (Net Inlet Pressure Required).

596265-02 11
1 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION PREBILGE BILGE WATER CLEANING SYSTEM INSTALLATION SYSTEM REFERENCE

The value of NPSHa or N.I.P.A. in the system

is dependent upon the characteristic of the
fluid being pumped, inlet piping, the location of
the suction vessel, and the pressure applied to
the fluid in the suction vessel. This is the
actual pressure seen at the pump inlet. It is
important to note that it is the inlet system
that sets the inlet conditions, and not the
pump.
The units used for calculating NPSHa or
N.I.P.A. must be consistent i.e. the total figures
should be in m or ft.
For low temperature applications the vapour
pressure is generally not critical and can be
assumed to be negligible.
If the NPSHa is less than NPSHr, cavitation
will occur but if the NPSHa is greater than
NPSHr, no cavitation will occur.

PREBILGE BILGE WATER CLEANING SYSTEM INSTALLATION SYSTEM REFERENCE 3 INSTALLING SETTLING TANKS

3 Installing Settling Tanks

Alfa Laval provides the following general
guidelines regarding settling tank arrangement
and installation:
• Heat the settling tank to make pre-treatment
more effective (approx. 50 °C is
recommended).
• Skim off separated oil from the surface to
make pre-treatment more effective by
preventing from oil building up. Skimming
should occur easily and in a manner that
allows uninterrupted processing.
• Drain solids and sludge from the bottom to
make pre-treatment more effective by
preventing solids from building up. Solids
removal should occur easily and in a manner
that allows uninterrupted processing.
• Use a regular and consistent schedule for oil
and solids removal to keep the system running
properly and minimise disturbances.
• The suction point should be positioned close
to the bottom of the tank, but allowing
clearance for solids build-up (minimum 300
mm from the bottom of the tank is
recommended).

596265-02 39
3 INSTALLING SETTLING TANKS PREBILGE BILGE WATER CLEANING SYSTEM INSTALLATION SYSTEM REFERENCE

Tank design (general)

Tank design is controlled by several important
elements. For instance, a proper design will
consider flow rate, retention time, size, and
removal ability of oil and solids. The information
given below provides some general guidance, but
all aspects applicable to a specific vessel should
be taken into account in the design of the bilge
water tank system.
• A bilge water tank should preferably be a
freestanding, superstructure or as a minimum
a split double-bottom tank
• A cascading (multi-compartment) tank design
improves settling performance. Through
proper baffling, disturbances and poor
separation can be avoided.
• Tanks with a slanted bottom have better solids
handling.
• The tank system should be able to hold at
least three to seven days’ bilge water
production, depending on trading pattern,
time in port, etc.
The installation of the PreBilge depends on the
bilge water treatment system layout onboard. All
installations should allow the PreBilge to run
continuously, like a LO-purifier. The PreBilge
should only be stopped for service and not, for
example, because the bilge tank is empty.
Below are some different installation options
depending on the bilge water treatment layout
onboard.

PREBILGE BILGE WATER CLEANING SYSTEM INSTALLATION SYSTEM REFERENCE 3 INSTALLING SETTLING TANKS

Example 1: Dirty- and Clean Bilge tanks

From
bilge
pump

ows

X0 26 6 33 A
The bilge pump pumps bilge water from the bilge
wells to the dirty bilge tank. The existing OWS
take suction from the clean bilge tank. PreBilge
should be installed in following manner:
– PreBilge should have suction from the dirty
bilge tank.
– PreBilge is continuously removing oil and
particles from the bilge water.
– The separated clean water is discharged to
the clean department.
– The level in the dirty bilge tank will slowly be
reduced and the level in the clean bilge
tank will slowly increase.
– PreBilge will start to remove the oil from the
top layer of dirty bilge tank as the level is
being reduced

596265-02 41
3 INSTALLING SETTLING TANKS PREBILGE BILGE WATER CLEANING SYSTEM INSTALLATION SYSTEM REFERENCE

– The top layer of the clean bilge tank should

overflow back to the dirty when the clean
compartment is full. The overflow pipe
should end in the middle of the dirty bilge
tank to avoid oil from the top layer of the
dirty bilge tank to overflow to the clean bilge
tank if the dirty tank would get full.
– Suction of the existing OWS should
minimum 200 mm from bottom of the clean
bilge tank
– Manual drain of collected solids should
possible from both compartments. Drain
should be routed to sludge tank.

PRO:
• Clean department always clean from particle
and oil
• You can reach the oil phase from the top of the
dirty compartment if the level goes down low
enough
• The separator can always be in continuous
operation as long as there is enough bilge
water in the tank

CON:
• This is the ideal set up – no con’s
This layout is very similar to the settling- and
service tank for the HFO treatment onboard.

The bilge pump pumps bilge water from the bilge
wells to the primary bilge tank. The OWS is
taking suction from the bilge holding tank to
discharge water overboard.
– PreBilge should have suction from the
primary bilge tank.
– Clean water is normally routed back to the
primary bilge but clean water can also be
routed to the bilge holding tank by
changing position of a manual 3-way valve
(not Alfa Laval supply).

3 INSTALLING SETTLING TANKS PREBILGE BILGE WATER CLEANING SYSTEM INSTALLATION SYSTEM REFERENCE

PRO:
• All bilge water passes the separator before it
reaches the bilge holding tank
• Possibility to regulate how many times you
want the bilge water to pass the PreBilge
before it is discharged to the bilge holding
tank.
• Bilge holding tank
• is free from oil and particles (depending on
how much you recirculate)
• The separator is in continuous operation as
long as you don’t empty the primary bilge tank
completely.

CON:
• Manual control of the 3-way valve
• If bilge water is quickly accumulating in the
bilge wells you don’t have time to recirculate
the primary bilge tank before it is time to fill it
up again with the bilge pump

This layout is rather common but it is not ideal
from a PreBilge point of view. The PreBilge
should be installed in following manner if
example 1 or 2 can’t be applied:
– PreBilge should have suction from one side
of the bilge holding tank, from the bottom
part of the tank but no closer than 300 mm
from the tank bottom.
– The clean water should be discharged
close to the suction point of the existing
OWS. This to ensure that the suction area of
the OWS is clean.
– The clean water should normally be routed
back to the bilge holding tank it should also
be possible to route it to another tank or
back to bilge well if no other tank is
available by changing position of a manual
3-way valve (not AL-supply)

3 INSTALLING SETTLING TANKS PREBILGE BILGE WATER CLEANING SYSTEM INSTALLATION SYSTEM REFERENCE

– It is required to be able to empty the bilge

holding tank using the PreBilge
– To be able to reach the oil phase in the top
tank. Once the level is lowered the 3-way
valve can be changed back to recirculation.

PRO:
• Suction point of the OWS is kept clean from
particle
• Possibility to regulate how much you want to
recirculate
• The separator can always be in operation

CON:
• Difficult reach the oil phase in the top of the
tank
• Oil slug can reach the existing OWS
• if the PreBilge can’t reach the top layer first
