“TH” [θ] [ð] CONSONANT SOUNDS

The “th” [θ] and [ð] sounds are commonly mispronounced by English language
learners.
This is not surprising, because in their first languages, the tongue simply does not
move
the way it does in English. To produce the “th” [θ] and [ð] sounds, we:

1. place the tip of the tongue between the teeth; then

2. blow air.

 “th” [θ] (voiceless – no vibration in the vocal chords)

 “th” [ð] (voiced – the vocal chords vibrate)

So, remember, to produce the “th” [θ] and [ð] sounds, think about where the tip of
your tongue is. And put it between your teeth.

[θ] (voiceless “th”: no vibration in the vocal chords)

 “thanks”
 “Thanks for coming!”
 “think”
 “Just think about it.”
 “third”
 “I got the third highest score.”
 “breath“
 “It was a breath of fresh air.”

Voiceless TH at the beginning of a word:

 Think thin thing thanks thirty Thursday

 Three thumb third thirteen

Voiceless TH in the middle of a word:

 Bathtub toothpick birthday healthy something anything

Voiceless TH at the end of a word:

 math tooth teeth tenth ninth fifth breath earth

 mouth south north

 “those”
 “Those dogs are so cute!”
 “breathe”
 “I can’t breathe well in this climate.”
 “weather”
 “The weather is beautiful today!”
 “bother”
 “Will you ever stop bothering me about that?”

Voiced TH at the beginning of a word:

The voiced TH sound is common in English pronouns and demonstratives.

 That this them the their there they're those they these

another
