Course Objective

Learning objectives
 Identify the properties of semiconductor in terms of
fundamental equations and energy band diagrams
 Apply the fundamental equations on to specific device
structures with intelligent approximations to figure out
their operation principles
 To appreciate various device models
 To be able to design better performing devices
Course Objective

Learning outcomes
After undergoing this course, you will be able to
 Understand the operation of few semiconductor
devices
 Develop insights of design to improve the performance
of certain devices knowing the overall limitations
 Analyze new device or new effects in a known device
in terms of insightful physics-based equations
Course Content

 Semiconductor fundamentals
 PN junction diode and application devices
 Bipolar transistor

Tutorial and Extended Tutorial

Tutorial assignments every week; solutions to be discussed in tutorial
class; short Tutorial Quiz to be conducted.

Separate assignments on model implementation and SPICE
simulation; final results to be demonstrated before TAs; new set of
problems to be issued based on students' performance.
Student Evaluation
 Tutorial Quiz : 15%
every following week of tutorial class
 similar problem with different data sets

 SPICE Simulation: 15%

 final results be demonstrated before the
TAs or instructors
 more marks for completing more number

of problems sets
 Quiz I → 15%
 Quiz II → 15%
 Final → 40%
Expectations

 100% attendance
 HW problems (numerical and simulation) to be
solved individually
 Discussion is OK but not outright copying
 Communicate to teachers and TAs about
course problems
