In “Academic achievement profiles of children with high functioning autism and Asperger syndrome: A
review of literature,” Schaefer and Mancil discuss the estimated 560,000 people in the United States
between the ages 0-21 years old that have been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. First of
all, Schaefer and Mancil believe that early intervention methods can really help and make a positive
impact on the academic goals of children with autism spectrum. They go on to state that if children are
helped at an early age, that 51% of the children graduate while the dropout rate is only 17.6%. However,
they expect this rate to go up if the intervention methods are applied early enough. If those methods
are indeed applied early enough, then the rate of children attending college with autism spectrum will
show a gradual increase; it will help them in obtaining meaningful employment. All in all, Schaefer and
Mancil believe that children with autism spectrum can be significantly helped if early intervention
methods are used.

engineering. Vol. 345. Springer, 2014.

In “Passive and active structural vibration control in civil engineering,” by Soong and Costantinou, they
discuss the possibilities of using passive energy dissipating devices so that a structural system can absorb
a larger amount of seismic energy. To begin, they state that during an earthquake, there’s a large
amount of seismic energy being input into a structural system, and that energy must be either absorbed
or dissipated through heat. These structures can be improved significantly if some of the energy from a
seismic event or earthquake is absorbed by a certain device instead of the structure itself. Additionally,
Soong and Constantinou go on to discuss friction devices which were first used for six building in
Canada. However, when energy is dissipated into structures that contain friction devices, energy is
dissipated in both braces, but they’re designed to only be effective for the force of tension. In turn,
friction devices have historically not held up as well as other energy dissipating devices.
