Presbyterian Women (PW) offers
women in the church meaningful ways
to live out their faith in the midst of a
caring community of women. For
more than 200 years PW groups have
strengthened the Presbyterian Church
and played a major role in sharing the
good news of Jesus Christ and
witnessing to the promise of God’s
kingdom. We are an inclusive, caring
community of women rooted in faith
and join together regularly for prayer,
study, service and fellowship. You are
invited to participate in this
wonderful ministry at New Braunfels
Presbyterian Church.

Welcome to the 2017–2018
PW/Horizons Bible study, Cloud of
Witnesses: The Community of Christ
in Hebrews.
Author Melissa Bane Sevier
invites us to explore major themes
found in Hebrews, relate these
themes to other parts of our faith
tradition, and tie them together
with the overarching motif of
community. This letter is a homily
for all of the communities of
which we are a part. As a “great
cloud of witnesses” (Heb. 12:1) we
are strengthened and encouraged
to “run with perseverance the race
that is set before us, looking to
Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of
our faith” (Heb. 12:1b-2).
About the Author
Melissa Bane Sevier is a
teaching elder in the
Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.). After more than
23 years as a pastor she
chose in 2015 to leave the
pastorate and focus on her
longtime ministry of
writing and photography.
Melissa has a degree in
elementary education
(King College), an MCE
from Reformed
Theological Seminary, an
MDiv from Louisville
Seminary, and a DMin
from McCormick
Seminary. She lives in
Versailles, Kentucky, with
her husband, Jerry.

NINE LESSONS BEGIN AND END WITH HYMN AND PRAYER, INCLUDE DISCUSSIONS THAT
BUILD COMMUNITY, AND CLOUD WITNESS STORIES SHARED BY PW WOMEN.

1. Jesus, the Christ, is the basis
for all of our faith and action,
individually and collectively.
2. God lives both in us and
among us, supporting who we
are and how we live.
3. God’s word is both living and
active, encouraging us to look
inward to live the most faithful
life we can.
4. We never know when an
encounter may bring us God’s
message of love and support.
5. The faith tradition supports us
through successes and
stumbles. Our own Book of
Confessions guides our
Reformed tradition.
6. Communities of faith support
each other during troubled
times.
7. Sabbath rest is where we find
hope and support for the
present and the future.
8. The household of faith
reminds us of our supportive
home with each other and
God.
9. The great cloud of witnesses
from the past and the present
show us how to live in faith
and support us in faithful
living.

History of PW at New Braunfels Presbyterian
and Past Presidents
THE WOMEN OF THE
CHURCH of New Braunfels
Presbyterian Church organized
on August 2, 1955, with 11
members attending. In 1965
there were 2 circles- morning
and evening- consisting of 51
members. In 1973 a third circle
known as the sewing circle was
organized. Forty members were
listed in these three circles.
Records in 1975 list Circle #1 as
a Bible study group meeting in
the morning, Circle #2 as a
Friendship and Projects group
also meeting on another
morning and Circle #3 as a
Training Circle meeting in the
evening. Sixty members were
listed.
The following year the circles
were listed as Morning,
Afternoon, Evening, and
Friendship, plus a Bible study
group. Our first yearbook was
printed in 1986, and the circles
were named, Esther, Ruth, Sarah
and Martha. The Women of the
Church (WOC) became
Presbyterian Women (PW) in
January, 1987. Mary Circle was
added in 1987 and in 1993,
Rebekah Circle was begun. In
1994 an evening circle was

begun again using the name
Sarah. The Dorcas Circle was
formed in the summer of 2006
as an evening, multi-
generational, service circle
replacing the Sarah Circle. In
2012, the Lydia Un- Circle in the
evening was born. In recent
years the PW Board was
renamed PW Coordinating
Team. 2016 saw the retirement
of Ruth Circle.
