Aast Grihas or Set Planets

Planets which lose some of their power due to their presence in close proximity of Sun
are termed as 'Aast Grihas' in Vedic Astrology. Planets which not 'Aast' are termed as
'Udit Grihas'.

Note: -

(i) Sun can never be 'Aast'.

(ii) Rahu & Ketu are always 'Aast' not because they are always close to Sun but because
they don't have any physical existence.

From how many degrees a planet becomes 'Aast' from Sun?

Planet Maargi Vakriya
Chandra (Moon) 12° ---
Mangal (Mars) 17° 8°
Budh (Mercury) 14° 12°
Guru (Jupiter) 11° 11°
Shukra (Venus) 10° 8°
Shani (Saturn) 16° 16°

Retrograde Planets or Vakriya Grihas

Planets which seem to be moving in the opposite direction of their movement (when seen
from Earth) in their respective orbits are termed as retrograde planets in Jyotish. In actual
no planet moves in the opposite direction but since the Earth is also revolving around the
Sun, due to which according to the concept of relative motion many times it seems that
the planet is moving in opposite direction.

Note: - (i) Sun & Moon can never be retrograde.

(ii) Rahu & Ketu are always retrograde.
(iii) Planets which are not 'Vakriya' are termed as 'Maargi'.

Angular Velocity of Earth in Astrology or Jyotish

Earth rotates from West to East on its axis. It takes 24 hours to complete one rotation
which means it rotates through 360° in this interval. This way it would take 4 minutes in
rotating through 1°.

One revolution = 360° = 24 hours

360° = 24 × 60 minutes

1° = (24 × 60 minutes) / 360° = 4 minutes

Dikbal of Planets or Grihas

Dik means disha or direction, so dikbal means power that a planet acquires due to it's
presence in some specific direction.

Gandmool Dosha or Dosa

If a person is born either in Ashvini, Revati, Magha, Ashlesha, Moola or Jyeshtha
nakshatra then the birth chart of the person is said to have Gandmool Dosha in the
Jyotisha of so called pandits.

There are three points in the ecliptic at which the boundaries of two zodiac signs or rashis
& the boundaries of two constellations or nakshatras coincide. If the moon is close to any
of such three points at the time of birth of a person than the person is said to have
Gandmool Dosha.

Point-I

The first point is the boundary of the sign Aries (or Maish rashi) & the sign Taurus (or
Vrish rashi) at which the boundary of Ashvini & Revati nakshatra also coincides.

Point-II

The second point is the boundary of the sign Cancer (or Kark rashi) & the sign Leo (or
Singh rashi) at which the boundary of Magha & Ashlesha nakshatra also coincides.

Point-III

The third point is the boundary of the sign Scorpio (or Vrishchik rashi) & the sign
Sagittarius (or Dhanu rashi) at which the boundary of Moola & Jyeshtha nakshatra also
coincides.

If the birth chart of a child is said to contain such a dosha then it is said by the so called
pandits that his father should not see the face of that child for the next 28 days after the
birth of that child & a pooja should get done by the pandits in the interval of those 28
days.

But in actual such a dosha is a myth & has got a lot of exceptions because nothing bad
happened to the fathers of such children who saw their faces with in 28 days of their
birth, when no pooja was done by any of the pandits.

In actual, relationship with father is observed by analysing tenth house in the birth chart.
Such a dosha is not a part of Indian Vedic Astrology & is a mere superstition.

Kaal Sarpa Dosh or Dosha or Yog

If all the planets (except Rahu & Ketu) in the birth chart of some person come on one
side of the axis of Rahu & Ketu then the birth chart is said to have Kaalsarpa Dosha in
Jyotish. It is said by the so called panditas that such a dosha is not auspicious regarding
variuos issues of life of a person. But in practical many exceptions are observed to such a
concept. Such a Dosha is not part of Indian Vedic Astrology & is a superstition.

Yog
Technically, a Yog is said to be completed when the phase difference of the positions of
Sun & Moon becomes multiple of 13° 20´. There are 27 Yogs but they have no
correlation with nakshatras or constellations.

Karan
Karan is based upon tithi. It is half of a tithi. This way technically, a karan is said to be
completed when the phase difference between the positions of Sun & Moon becomes
integral multiple of six.

There are 11 karans. Out of which the first seven karans are called as 'Char' (or variable)
karans & the last four are called as 'Sthir' (or constant) karans. Last four are called as
'Sthir' because they always come on second half of Krishna Paksh Chaturdashi, first half
of Aamavasya, second half of Aamavasya & first half of Shukla Paksh Pratipada.

Saadhesati or Sadhesati
It is made up of 'Saadhesaat' which means a period of 'Seven & a half' years. A person or
his Chandra Rashi or Moon Sign is said to be under the influence of Sadhesati if the
Shani or Saturn in Gochar or present tense is transitting through that Chandra Rashi or it's
previous rashi or it's next rashi.
When the Shani in gochar (or present) enters the previous zodiac of the Chandra rashi of
the person, sadhesati is said to be started on that Chandra rashi (first charan of sadhesati
is said to be started). When the Shani enters in the Moon sign of the person, second
charan is said to be started & when the Shani enters the next rashi, third charan is said to
be started. since Shani takes a period of about 2.5 years in transitting through a zodiac,
this way in transitting thorugh three rashis it would take a total of: - 2.5 + 2.5 + 2.5 = 7.5
years.

Three contiguous rashis would always be under the influence of Shani's sadhesati
simultaneously. Some rashi would be under first charan, previous to this rashi would be
under second charan & previous to this previous rashi would be under third charan of
sadhesati. There are a total of 12 rashis. This way 3/12 = 0.25 or 25% rashis are always
under the influence os Shani's sadhesati.

But this concept of Sadhesati is not a part of Vedic Astrology & is a part of jyotish of so
called pandits. Mahadasha-Antardasha of grihas plays a more vital role in determining
about a person's time phase (good or bad regarding a particular issue of life) at a given
time. Sadhesati affects a person more on psychological basis.

Dhaiya of Shani
Dhaiya word is derived from 'Dhaai', which means a period of 'Dhaai years'. A person or
his chandra rashi is said to be under the influence of Dhaiya if the Shani in gochar or
present is transitting through either 4th or 8th zodiac from his chandra rashi. As Shani
takes 2.5 years in transitting through a zodiac, this period is termed as Dhaiya of Shani.

Disha Shool or Disha Shul

According to this concept of so called pandits, travelling in some particular directions on
some specific days is not considered as auspicious. However, this is not a part of Vedic
Astrology.

Day Direction in which not to travel

Sunday West
Monday East
Tuesday North
Wednesday North
Thursday South
Friday West
Saturday East
