Short description of the project:

The multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system has increases channel capacity where allowing
several users to access to various services at the same time. Since the approval by the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) that the ultra wideband (UWB) technology operates from
3.1 to 10.6GHz, finds itself in a great number of wireless applications. The UWB technology in
combination with MIMO techniques has proven to be a solution for the limitation of short range
communications, which requires devices to transmit extremely low spectral power. However, due
to the strong mutual coupling among the antenna elements, it is difficult to place multiple
antennas closely in a small mobile handset while maintaining high isolation, wide operation band,
and quasi-omnidirectional in the H plane. Thus, it is a great challenge to design a UWB MIMO
antenna with high isolation. There are different technique to reduce the mutual coupling and
enhance the isolation in the UWB-MIMO system like Decoupling and Matching Network,
Electromagnetic Band Gap(EBG) Structure, Neutralizing Line, Defected Ground Structure(DGS),
Spatial and Angular Variation, Inserting Stubs and Heterogeneous Element etc. Moreover, the
diversity performance of the UWB MIMO antenna will be studied in terms of envelope
correlation coefficient (ECC) and channel capacity loss (CCL). The proposed UWB MIMO
antenna can be used for wireless personal area network (WPAN), wireless body area network
(WBAN), and other applications that operate in UWB spectrum specified by the FCC, wherever
there is a problem of multipath fading.

Aim/Objective of the project:

To design a compact 2X2 MIMO system having high isolation between the multiple antenna by
reducing the mutual coupling between them and also useful for ultra wide band application.
Again further the study will be carried out to reducing higher order mode and by reducing mutual
coupling by DGS geometry, so that data loss between transmission/receiving ends can be
minimized. Further to enhance the performance of the system, we analyze the diversity gain,
substrate size, bandwidth, efficiency etc. Also we will have to fabricate the MIMO-UWB
Antenna for practical application.
Methodology (the necessary software/tool or process steps):
1. Study the mutual coupling between multiple antennas in a system and its specific parameter.
2. Design and simulate an UWB Antenna using CST Microwave Studio and analyze its
parameter.
3. Then we design same antenna structure for multiple antenna system which will be applicable
for UWB band of operation.
4. Then we will characterize the simulated data for further modification and realize the UWB
multiple antenna system through fabrication.
Possible outcome of the project:
1. A compact 2×2 MIMO system using Defected Ground Structure (DGS) operated in UWB
spectrum applicable for short range communications.
2. The design antenna system may have electrically small, printed on a FR4 substrate with very
less dielectric constant and thickness. The system may have high isolation between antenna
arrays with very high diversity performance.
3. Fabrication of the multiple antenna system.
Importance of the project in engineering aspect:
With the advent of new multimedia communications applications, antennas with ultra wide band
capabilities (UWB) will become an important issue when dealing with different kinds of everyday
terminals. Now a day, there is a miniaturization of communication device, so there is a
requirement of small transmitter/receiver. Hence the compact antenna will be required for various
application purposes. Here in this project, the proposed MIMO-UWB antenna structure will have
a stable gain, good impedance match, high isolation, low envelope correlation coefficient and
good radiation pattern at the UWB operating band
Innovativeness if any (why the project is different from others):
The compact multi antenna structure will be useful for various UWB applications. Performance
parameters such as S-parameters, radiation patterns, envelope correlation coefficient, total active
reflection coefficient and channel capacity loss indicate that the proposed MIMO design will be a
suitable candidate for high data rate UWB applications.
