What sort of books one should read depends on the individual’s liking and leanings. I
would go for Kalki’s “Ponniyin Selvan” & “Sivagamiyin Sabadham”. Both are
historical novels (one with Cholas and another about Pallavas) so well written. Under
modern day writers, I would , on any day, go for Sujatha’s novels.

Vijayanarasimhan Karthikeyan, I read, like I breath, I read...

Since the question asks about ‘books’, I’m giving the following list in its widest sense:

1. Tirukkuṟaḷ - a must read for any Tamil or anyone who can read Tamil.
Saint Tiruvaḷḷuvar will not fail to amaze you with his wonderful
couplets. At least read its third book - the Kāmatuppāl
2. Kuṟuntokai - this Sangam anthology of 400 short love poems will
definitely make you reconsider your ideas about both love and poems.
Sangam poets are characterized by their deep insights in to things and
their relatively simple language and expressions, which still goes to
many deep levels (don’t miss the ‘uḷḷuṟai’ & ‘iṟaicci’ in those songs!) (All
of Sangam literature is a must read, yet I suggest Kuṟuntokai for its
simple and succinct structure and themes)
3. Kāppiyam (Epic) - Tamil abounds with epics - great and less. Make it
a point to read at least one of them. Here is a list of my suggestions (in
order of decreasing recommendation):
- Cilappatikāram - Iḷaṅkōvaṭikaḷ’s magnum opus is also the mother of
all epics in Tamil. The epic excels in that it is not simply portraying the
lives of its characters but is also giving us a lot of information about the
society at that time.Unique and pioneer in many ways, it is a must read,
like Tirukkuṟaḷ, for any Tamil reader.
- Kamparāmāyaṇam - A Tamil adaptation of Valmiki’s Sanskrti epic,
this one is appreciated for its sheer brilliance in its poetic expressions.
- Periyapurāṇam - The first epic, perhaps, in the long heritage of
literature, that goes beyond just legends and myths to actual history to
form its story. The epic also manages to not compromise in its poetical
beauty. The author Cēkkiḻār is also appreciated for his apt usage of
words across the epic.
- Cēvakacintāmaṇi - An epic of love and marriage authored by a Jain
Saint sworn for lifetime celibacy, will never cease to amuse you with its
paradoxical enigmas. Should be read along with the commentary by
Nacciṉārkkiṉiyar, at whose scholarly hands the gem of an epic gets its
beauty highlighted like that gem being embedded in to a particularly
made jewel!
- Peruṅkatai (utayaṇakumāra kāviyam) - This great epic is available to
us only in parts (the one mentioned in parenthesis is the same story
rendered as a lesser epic, but quite not as beautiful as the greater
counterpart!) Similar in style and content to Cilappatikāram it too
becomes a must read for a Tamil enthusiast (but not appreciated
equally, may be because it is an adaptation from the Sanskrit original -
Bruhatkathā)
- Cīṟāppurāṇam &
- Tēmpāvaṇi - Both these are epics written in the 18th century CE. I
am yet to start reading them, but am adding them here because they are
epics belonging to religions other than the traditional ones, yet excel in
their composition. They reperesent the love of their respective authors
towards the Tamil language which made them compose an entire epic
according to Tamil’s tradtions, the story of which belongs to another
culture and regions!
4. Kuyilpāṭṭu or Pāñcāli capatam - these minor epics of Bāratiyār are
very mesmerizing ones. You will not need a dictionary (at least for 90%
of the words!) while reading these great creations of the poet, hence
these are a good starting point (if you actually want to go through my
list here!) Two lines, one from each, are very famous among almost all
Tamiḷ:

‘kātal kātal kātal

kātal pōyiṉ kātal pōyiṉ
cātal cātal cātal’ - Kuyilpāṭṭu

‘tarumattiṉ vāḻvutaṉai cūtu kavvum

tarumam marupaṭi vellum’ - Pāñcāli capatam
5. __________________?

Tamil literature is literally an ocean. With its more than two thousand
year long unbroken chain of poets and authors, it holds in it much
much more than one can even list in his lifetime. Asking me to choose
just 5 among this myriad of books is not justice. Hence, I leave this last
one blank, as a placeholder for all those books!

Still, if I’m really needed to choose just one book, among all my
favorites, to be put there in the 5th position, then I’d make up my mind
for this one book:

Mūṉrām ulakappōr by Vairamuthu. The book has so many

specialties and highlights, but two things stand above all:

i. The fact that the novel is authored by a poet is evident in each and
every word of it. Vairamuthu uses different styles (and dialects) of the
language while narrating different parts of the story which involves
people from different walks of life. Simply amazing.

ii. The book deals with a very essential issue of today’s world - the earth
and how we humans are fighting our greatest war against it (that’s why
the title!) [The book’s ending however seemed a bit abrupt and hurried
and is not doing justice to the rest of it, in my humble opinion!]
So, that’s my list of must read five books in Tamil (I know, I cheated a bit and packed
in a bit more than is actually asked, I won’t apologize for it!) Thanks!

it may sound bit odd, but start reading Aganaanooru or puranaanooru or similar
Sangam literature. These are interesting and beautiful in my opinion as many are
real life based and depicts what happened so many years ago.
