Personal experience dealing with the school board:

Due to a conflict of interest (my wife worked for the board) my association
was primarily at the school level, as an involved parent. Through her I
maintained familiarity with the changes in curriculum and funding over the
years, and followed the evolution of the board. In my work with the Knights
of Columbus, I frequently worked with individual schools and their students.
What education issue is on your radar, and why?
Funding for special needs students and for the necessary staff to support
these students is critical. As a parent of a special needs child (now
completing her third year of college) we realize the importance of
maintaining programs and staff to help these students succeed.

What do you hope to change about the education systems?

I want to encourage more parental involvement and interaction with the
students in the schools and faith community.
I will work within the board as a public advocate, with a focus on student
achievement and well being.

Rosary Parish and St. Martin's were merged into one during this time).

Served as Chair, Finance Committee, St. Martin of Tours Parish, 2008 - to

present.

Currently serving in ministry at St Martin's Parish (Commentator, Lay

Reader, Eucharistic Minister - past service in sacramental preparation of
youth).

Involved (long term) with the South London Community Breakfast Program
(a four church consortium providing a weekly nutritious breakfast to the
poor and disadvantaged).

Personal experience dealing with the school board:

Both my wife and I became involved with the school system (Catholic
Parent/Teacher Association) with the enrolment of our first child at St.
Martin's School more than 20 years ago.

I became involved with and served as Chair of the Regional CPTA

(superseded by School Councils and District School Council after the
amalgamation of Boards) prior to my election as Trustee (1994 - 2000).

I served as Vice-chair, London & Middlesex County Separate School Board,

1997 and was part of the committee that made preparations for the
amalgamation of 3 coterminous boards.
I served as the inaugural Chair of the amalgamated London District Catholic
School Board in 1998. This was a very successful transition.

I was asked to chair the Early Literacy initiatives Task Force (LDCSB) in
2001. This resulted in many recommendations that directed extra classroom
resources to where they were needed most.

As parents of two special needs individuals, my wife and I continue to be

advocates for all special needs children.

What education issue is on your radar, and why?

I think that there will be three issues that will need to be addressed in the
coming term. First and foremost is the issue of declining enrolment. This
will affect many stakeholders and dealing with this issue will necessitate
difficult decisions with regards to accommodation and other financial issues.
Secondly is the issue of the inexperience of the incoming Board. At a
minimum there will be five and possibly seven new trustees in a total of
eight board members. Trustees need to be strong representatives of all
stakeholders and the experience lost by the outgoing trustees will be very
much felt in dealing with upcoming issues. Thirdly is the issue of
maintaining a distinctive Catholic Education. There will be upcoming
financial pressures associated with enrolment issues which will used to
rationalize an amalgamation to one public secular system. Trustees will need
to work hard to maintain, enhance and justify a distinctive Catholic School
System.

What do you hope to change about the education system?

We currently have a good education system - but it can be improved.

I would ensure that there is an ongoing commitment to providing the best

educational opportunity and experience for ALL students in the London
District Catholic School System. Maximizing resources to the classroom
must be a priority. This would include the use of new technology such as
Smartboards to enhance the educational experience. There needs to be a
focus on providing equitable access to classroom resources and educational
opportunities for both special needs students as well as those that are
economically disadvantaged. Parents should not be expected to fund raise
for basic classroom resources.

I am committed to ensuring that there is an open and honest dialogue with

the stakeholders of the London District Catholic School system. This will be
required for the resolution of accommodation issues as well as making the
fiscal management of the system transparent and accountable.

I am also committed to maintaining the distinctiveness of Catholic education

- providing educational excellence, in a school culture based on the Gospel
values of Jesus Christ so that ALL students may develop their full spiritual,
academic, physical and social potential.

Why do you want to be a school board trustee?

My immigrant parents (especially my mother) instilled in all their children

an appreciation of the importance of education. Having benefitted from this
priority and 'push' and after becoming a parent myself, I have felt a need and
a desire to be involved and to 'give back' to the education system I grew up
in.

I have previously served as a trustee and I served my constituents with

integrity, dedication and commitment as well as taking on effective
leadership roles. I believe that this experience would serve me well if I was
fortunate enough to represent the ratepayers of Wards 11, 12, and 13.

I am excited by the prospect of trustees taking on the responsibility for

student achievement - a new Ministry expectation. I look forward to policy
development and budget direction/approval in this regard.

I am ready to work for and would be honoured to represent the Catholic

ratepayers of Wards 11, 12 and 13.
